Richie Named to People’s Top 10 Best-Dressed List

There’s no denying Nicole Richie has gone from The Simple Life to a fashion icon…

The 31-year-old part-Mexican American former reality television star, fashion designer and Fashion Star celebrity mentor has been named to People magazine’s top 10 best-dressed list for this year.

Nicole Richie

Richie, a contributor for Style.com’s Style Map blog, ranks No. 3 on the list behind Scandal star Kerry Washington and Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence.

But Richie isn’t the only Latina on this year’s best-dressed list…

Zoë Saldana, who reportedly secretly wed Italian artist Marco Perego this summer, ranks No. 4.

The fashionable Saldana made a splash at this year’s Oscars in a Alexis Mabille Couture dress, Neil Lane jewelry, Roger Vivier shoes and a Salvatore Ferragamo clutch.

Emma Stone, Lily Collins, Kate Bosworth, Jessica Chastain, Solange Knowles and Jenna Dewan-Tatum round out the list.

Peña to Star in the Demonic Thriller “The Vatican Tapes”

Michael Peña is headed to the priesthood…

The 37-year-old Mexican American actor has joined the cast of Lakeshore Entertainment and Lionsgate’s The Vatican Tapes.

Michael Pena

Peña, who earned a Spirit Award nomination for his performance in the police drama End of Watch, will portray Father Lozano in the demonic thriller directed by Mark Neveldine.

Filming is expected to begin next month with Djimon Hounsou, Dougray Scott, Kathleen Robertson, Peter Andersson, John Patrick Amedori, Alex Sparrow and Olivia Dudley part of the cast.

Dudley plays a twentysomething who seems to cause death and destruction to those around her. Peña’s character is the local priest who first tries to help.

It’s the latest project for Peña, who will next appear in DreamWorks Animation’s Turbo.

He recently signed on to star in David O. Russell’s next film alongside Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lawrence.

Canto Cast in “X-Men: Days of Future Past”

Adan Canto has the X (Men) Factor…

The 31-year-old Mexican actor has been cast as part of the ensemble of the next installment of the X-Men film franchise.

Adan Canto

No word yet on which character Canto will portray in the Bryan Singer-directed film X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Singer posted a photo on Twitter to confirm the news as Canto is photographed watching a hockey game and standing next to the film’s other cast members Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Shawn Ashmore.

Canto responded to Singer’s tweet, saying: “Thrilled to be X-Men,” confirming that he’s indeed part of the project.

Canto, who most recently starred in Fox’s serial killer-drama The Following, once hinted that his new project would have him “turn into a ball of fire if someone pisses [him] off.” Thus, he is predicted to play either Brazilian mutant Roberto da Costa a.k.a. Sunspot or Japanese mutant Shiro Yoshida a.k.a. Sunfire.

Days of Future Past will be based on Uncanny X-Men #141 and 142 back in 1981 during Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s run. The story introduced the idea of an alternate future for the Marvel Comics mutants that grew out of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants killing an important senator, leading to a future where all mutants are hunted by Sentinels.

In addition to Stewart, McKellen, and Ashmore, Canto will team up with other cast members, including James McAvoy, Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Ellen Page and Halle Berry.

The Marvel film is slated to open in U.S. theaters on July 18, 2014.

Peña Cast in David O Russell’s Next Film

Michael Peña has lined up his next big project…

The 37-year-old Mexican American actor has been cast in director David O. Russell’s next film.

Michael Pena

The Sony Pictures drama, which was formerly known as American Bullshit, is inspired by the true story of a notorious financial con artist and his mistress/partner in crime, who were forced to work with an overly ambitious federal agent to turn the tables on other con artists, mobsters and politicians.

Peña joins a cast that includes Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Jennifer Lawrence.

The film is set for a December 13 release.

Peña, whose recent credits include a Spirit Award-nominated role in David Ayer’s End Of Watch and Gangster Squad, recently completed voice work on DreamWorks Animation’s Turbo, which is set to be released in July. He also just wrapped the Diego Luna-directed Chavez.

He has also been cast as the lead in Fox’s drama pilot The List.

Russell’s film is set for a December 13 release.

Bündchen Named One of the Hottest Women of 2013

She may have just given birth to her second child last month, but Gisele Bündchen is still being hailed as one of the hottest women of 2013…

Men’s Health has named the 32-year-old Brazilian supermodel as of the hottest women of the year. Bündchen, who comes in at No. 9, is the only Latina to make the Top 10.

Gisele Bundchen

“She’s like a fashion model blitzkrieg; unstoppable, and easily destroying the competition. She’s been so busy that she purportedly turned down 20 million dollars to be the spokeswoman for Clonaid, the human cloning company. Which, on the one hand, was probably a smart business decision,” says the magazine “(The Guinness Book of Records credits her as ‘the world’s richest supermodel,’  so she doesn’t need the money.) But still, can you imagine if Clonaid was able to use their cloning technology to build an army of Bündchens? There could be a Bündchen in every home! Okay, probably not realistic, but we can dream, can’t we?”

Other Latinas who’ve made the list include Jessica Alba, Adriana Lima and Sofia Vergara. Katy Perry topped the list, beating out Esquire‘s Sexiest Woman Alive Mila Kunis, AskMen‘s Most Desirable Woman Jennifer Lawrence, and Maxim‘s hottest woman Bar Refaeli.

Here’s a look at the Latinas on Men’s Health’s “The Hottest Women of 2013” list:

Walsh Cast as the Lead in “The Hunger Games” Spoof

It looks like Maiara Walsh is the latest tribute headed to the arena… Well, sort of!

The 24-year-old half-Brazilian actress has been cast as the female lead in a parody of Jennifer Lawrence’s blockbuster film The Hunger Games.

Maiara Walsh

In the film entitled The Starving Games, Walsh will portray a character named Kantmiss Evershot, based on Lawrence’s character Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games.

Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the duo behind Date Movie, Meet the Spartans and Vampires Suck, wrote the script and will direct the parody. Along with mocking Suzanne Collins book series, the film will also spoof The Avengers, Sherlock Holmes and the finale of the Harry Potter franchise.

Pretty Little Liars actor Brant Daugherty has already been cast as the parody version of Gale, played in The Hunger Games by Liam Hemsworth.

Shooting on The Starving Games begins this week in New Orleans.

Walsh, known more for her dramatic roles, co-stars as the devious Simone Sinclair on ABC Family’s Switched at Birth and has appeared on The Secret Life of the American Teenager, the CW‘s The Vampire Diaries and ABC’s Desperate Housewives.

Román & Avitia Give Mexico Its First-Ever Olympic Medals in Archery

London Olympics 2012

Despite being thisclose to winning a gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games, Aída Román has plenty of reason to be proud.

The 24-year-old Mexican archer had to settle for silver in women’s individual archery at the London Games on Thursday after losing a tense, sudden-death shoot-off against South Korea’s Ki Bo-bae.

Aída Román

After a disappointing fourth set at Lord’s Cricket Ground, Román rallied to take the fifth and force the decisive shoot-off. Ki shot first and hit an 8. Román matched it, but Ki’s arrow was closer to the center, giving her the victory.

“Strictly speaking, it wasn’t that difficult a shot,” said the two-time Olympian about the shot that cost her the gold, “but it became a lot more complicated.”

Aída Román & Mariana Avitia

But Román’s silver is still a remarkable feat for Mexico, a nation that had never won an Olympic medal in archery. And, Mexico now has two of them.

Roman was joined on the podium by her fellow countrywoman Mariana Avitia, who came from behind to beat American Khatuna Lorig in the bronze medal match.

Mariana Avitia

The 18-year-old Mexican archer beat the Lorig—the woman who taught Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence how to shoot the bow and arrow she used while portraying Katniss in the recent Hollywood blockbuster—6-2 in the bronze medal match.

Trailing 4-2 going into the fourth set, Lorig hit a 10 so perfectly centered that it hit the camera hole and bounced off the target. Avitia followed with a 7, and Lorig had an opening. She followed with an 8, and Avitia answered with a 9. But Lorig’s third arrow was a disastrous 6, giving the bronze to Avitia and denying Lorig a second medal in her fifth Olympics and 20 years after her first — a bronze in the team event at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.
