Monica Barbaro Earns First Two SAG Awards Nods of Her Career for “A Complete Unknown”

Monica Barbaro is having a complete moment…

The 2025 SAG Awards nominations have been announced, with the 34-year-old part-Mexican American actress earning her first-ever nods from the Screen Actors Guild.

Barbaro is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her performance as folk legend Joan Baez in A Complete Unknown. She’s also nominated alongside her co-stars in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Selena Gomez is a two-time nominee this year.

The 30-year-old Mexican American actress up her lifetime SAG Awards nods to five with her two nods this awards season, including Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture alongside her co-stars for Emilia Perez and Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series alongside her Only Murders in the Building co-stars. It’s her third consecutive ensemble nod for OMITB.

Two of Gomez’s Emilia Perez co-stars are also two-time nominees.

In addition her nod in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture category, Zoe Saldana is up for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her performance in Emilia Perez. They’re her first-ever SAG Awards nods.

Meanwhile, Karla Sofía Gascón is up for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.

Liza Colón-Zayas has earned two SAG Awards nods for her work in The Bear, including Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series along side her co-stars and Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for her portrayal of Tina.

Other nominees include Colman Domingo for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in Sing Sing, Adriana Paz in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for Emilia Perez, Javier Bardem for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story, Mark Indelicato for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series for Hacks, Eva Longoria for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series for Only Murders in the Building, and Jon Arias and Ursula Corbero for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series for The Day of the Jackal.

The 31st annual SAG Awards is set for Sunday, February. 23, at the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall, with the event streaming live on Netflix at 8:00 pm ET / 5:00 pm. PT.

Selena Gomez Earns Two Golden Globe Nominations

Selena Gomez is celebrating a special double…

The 2025 Golden Globes nominations have been announced, with the 32-year-old American singer, actress, producer, and businesswoman scoring two nods.

Gomez picked up her third consecutive Golden Globe nomination for her acclaimed work as Mabel Mora in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building.

Additionally, Gomez picked up a nod in the Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture category for work in Emilia Perez, a Netflix musical that received the most nominations from the Golden Globes Foundation with 10.

Gomez and her Emilia Perez co-stars won the Best Actress prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Gomez’s Emilia Perez cast mates, Karla Sofia Gascon and Zoe Saldana, have also earned Golden Globe nods.

Gascon, a 52-year-old Spanish actress who was recently named Best Actress at the European Film Awards, earned a nod for Best Comedy/Musical Actress – Motion Picture, becoming the first out transgender woman to be nominated in a film category.

Meanwhile, Saldana will compete against Gomez in the Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture category. It’s the 46-year-old Puerto Rican and Dominican American actress’ first-ever Golden Globe nomination.

Colman Domingo has picked up a nod in the Best Drama Actor – Motion Picture category.

The 55-year-old Emmy-winning Belizean-Guatemalan American actor and activist, who recently won the Outstanding Lead Performance at the Gotham Awards, earned the nod for his work in Sing Sing.

Fernanda Torres has earned her first-ever Golden Globe nomination.

The 59-year-old Brazilian film, stage and television actress and writer is up for Best Drama Actress – Motion Picture for her performance in the Brazilian film I’m Still Here, which earned Brazilian director Walter Salles his fourth Best Foreign Language Film nod.

It’s an award her previously won in 1999 for his film Central Station.

Sofía Vergara is nominated in the Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress category for Griselda.

It’s the 52-year-old Colombian actress’ fifth Golden Globe nod.

Javier Bardem has picked up a monster nod.

The 55-year-old Spanish Oscar-winning actor, who previously won a Golden Globe for No Country for Old Men, is nominated in the Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or Television Film category for Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.

Bardem will compete against Diego Luna in the Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or Television Film category.

The 44-year-old Mexican actor, director and producer, who previously earned his first-ever Golden Globes nod last year for his work on Andor, received the nod for his performance in La Máquina this year.

Liza Colón-Zayas has earned her first-ever Golden Globes nod.

The 52-year-old Latina actress and playwright is up for Best TV Supporting Actress for her work on The Bear, a role that earned her a Primetime Emmy earlier this year.

The 2025 Golden Globes take place on Sunday, January 5, 2025, beginning at 8:00 pm ET/5:00 pm PT. The ceremony will air live on CBS linear television and also stream live via Paramount+ for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers.

This year’s show is hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser.

Carlos Bardem to Star in the Comedy Feature “Mis(s)chief”

Carlos Bardem is getting into a little mischief…

The 61-year-old Spanish actor and writer will star opposite Konkona Sen Sharma in the comedy feature Mis(s)chief.

The project hails from U.K. and India-based production outfit Avani Films and is currently in development.

It has advanced to the second round at the 2025 Sundance Development Labs as a curated entry.

Mis(s)chief will follow a mother of two trying to succeed as a filmmaker while navigating a failing marriage, the odd bullet from a gangster she has unwittingly managed to annoy and the never-ending schedule of her children’s homework.

British filmmaker Peter Webber is on board as executive producer and Emmy-nominated casting director Nancy Bishop is assembling an international cast.

The film will be helmed by writer-director Anu Vaidyanathan, who noted, “Having witnessed life on both sides of the camera as an actor and a director, I am thrilled to have two legendary actors, Konkona and Carlos, to help me bring this story and these characters to life.”

Bardem, the brother of Javier Bardem, has previously starred in A pesar de todo, Assassin’s Creed and Che: Part Two.

Javier Bardem to Star in Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s Next Film “El ser querido”

Javier Bardem has lined up his next project…

The 55-year-old Spanish Oscar-winning actor has signed on to star in the next film from Spanish filmmaker Rodrigo Sorogoyen.

Titled El ser querido, the film will be directed by Sorogoyen from a screenplay he penned with Isabel Peña.

The film will also star Victoria Luengo.

The official synopsis reads: In ‘El ser querido’, an acclaimed film director and his daughter, an unsuccessful actress, shoot a film together after years of estrangement and a difficult past that none of them want to talk about.

The project is a Movistar Plus+ original film in co-production with Caballo Films, El Ser Querido AIE and Le Pacte (France), financed by ICAA with the support of the Creative Europe Media Program.

The film will be released in cinemas, distributed by A Contracorriente Films, and will later be available exclusively on Movistar Plus+. International sales will be handled by Goodfellas.

Bardem is one of Spain’s most famous exports. His most recent titles include Dune: Part Two and The Little Mermaid.

His last Spanish project was Fernando León de Aranoa’s The Good Boss, for which he won the Goya for Best Actor.

Luengo most recently starred in Pedro Almódovar’s English-language debut The Room Next Door. On the small screen, she starred in Riot Police, the Movistar Plus+ series directed by Sorogoyen, for which she won the Ondas Award for Best Actress.

Sorogoyen will be known to most for his 2022 feature The Beasts, which won nine Goya awards.

Pedro Almodóvar to Receive San Sebastian Film Festival’s Donostia Award

It’s another career honor for Pedro Almodóvar…

The San Sebastian Film Festival will fete the 74-year-old Spanish Oscar-winning filmmaker with its prestigious Donostia Award at its 72nd edition, running September 20-28.

Presentation of the honorary award, which the festival said recognizes “extraordinary contributions to the world of cinema”, will take place in the Kursaal Auditorium before a screening of his latest movie, The Room Next Door.

The film is Almodóvar’s first in English and stars Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore.

The Room Next Door will debut at Venice. Swinton will present Almodóvar with the award in San Sebastian.

Almodóvar first screened at San Sebastian with his second feature, Pepi, Luci, Bom y otras chicas del montón / Pepi, Luci, Bom, competing in the New Filmmakers section.

He competed in the Official Selection with his next film, Laberinto de pasiones / Labyrinth of Passions (1982).

Almodóvar has also previously handed out Donostia Awards in San Sebastian. Over the years, he presented the honorary award to Al Pacino, Woody Allen and Antonio Banderas.

“My career began in San Sebastian in the year 1980 and since then I have returned to the festival often, with or without a film,” Almodóvar said.

“I have always immensely enjoyed myself. I have given the Donostia Award to Al Pacino, Woody Allen and Antonio Banderas. This year they are giving it to me, and I am delighted and grateful. I mean it, it’s an honor. San Sebastian is one of the cities where the cinema is celebrated with enormous enthusiasm. More than ever, at these times, we need the complicity of the spectators, and their presence in the film theatres. It is a dream to attend a festival like this, where the cinemas are always full.”

Last year, the Lifetime Achievement Award was handed to Javier Bardem. Other previous filmmakers to have received the Donostia Award include Francis Ford Coppola, Woody Allen, Oliver Stone, Agnès Varda, Hirokazu Koreeda and Costa-Gavras.

Morena, Mediacrest, Estrategia Audiovisual & Fandango Join Forces on Álvaro Longoria’s Documentary”The Sleeper”

Álvaro Longoria’s latest project is gaining momentum…

Spain’s Morena, Mediacrest and Estrategia Audiovisual are joining forces with Italy’s Fandango on The Sleeper, a thriller documentary following an alleged Caravaggio painting, directed by the 56-year-old Spanish film director, executive producer, and actor.

Rome-based Fandango will handle international sales rights.

Based on an original story created by Morena co-founder Longoria, Mediacrest’s Gerardo Olivares and Estrategia Audiovisual’s Ricardo Fernández-Deu, the project started production at the end of 2023, and is being shot in Madrid, London and several cities in Italy.

Guided by art dealer Jorge Coll, The Sleeper tells the journey of a piece of art that goes from a house’s living room in Madrid to making headlines worldwide in light of the possibility that it could be a lost painting by Italian Baroque master Caravaggio.

“You can’t ask for a better thriller plot,” Longoria told Variety. “The world of art is fascinating and somewhat obscure. The variables that affect the artistic versus economic value of a painting are plenty and this has always fascinated me.”

The documentary marks Longoria’s return to directing. His 2012 debut, Sons of the Clouds, produced by Javier Bardem, scored a Spanish Academy Goya, while 2015’s The Propaganda Game nabbed a nomination.

Enrique Murciano to Star in Netflix’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story”

The 50-year-old Cuban American actor has joined the cast of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the second installment of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s true-crime anthology series for Netflix.

The first of two trials, broadcast on Court TV, had the nation in its grip, much like the 1994 trial of O.J. Simpson, and is believed to have played a part in the modern-day fascination with true crime. The prosecution argued that the pair were in fact seeking to inherit their father’s multimillion-dollar estate, and the Menendez brothers were convicted in 1996 and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Murciano, best known for his work on Without a Trace, is part of a roster of new cast additions that includes Dallas Roberts, Jason Butler Harner and 10 others.

Murciano is Carlos Baralt, an Americanized Cuban immigrant, professor and lawyer, uncle to the Menendez Brothers and brother-in-law to Jose Menendez, and the executor of the Menendez will.

Other cast members include Michael Gladis, who plays Tim Rutten; Drew Powell as Det. Tom Linehan; Charlie Hall is Craig Cignarelli; Gil Ozeri plays Dr. William Vicary; Jeff Perry portrays Peter Hoffman; Tessa Auberjonois is Dr. Laurel Oziel; Tanner Stine plays Perry Berman; Larry Clarke portrays Brian Andersen; Jade Pettyjohn is Jamie Pisarcik and Marlene Forte portrays Marta Cano.

They join previously announced cast Javier Bardem as Jose Menendez, Chloë Sevigny as Kitty Menendez, Nicholas Alexander Chavez as Lyle Menendez, Cooper Koch as Erik Menendez, Nathan Lane as Dominick Dunne, Ari Graynor as Leslie Abramson, and Leslie Grossman as Judalon Smyth.

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story will debut in 2024.

Murphy and Brennan executive produce with Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, David McMillan, Louise Shore and Carl Franklin.

The first installment of the anthology, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, starred Evan Peters as the notorious serial killer. It debuted in September 2022 and became one of Netflix’s most popular English-language series ever, leading to Netflix’s green light of two follow-up installments, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story being the first.

The 54-year-old Spanish Oscar-winning actor will star in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the second season of the acclaimed Netflix crime anthology Monster from creators Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan.

Bardem will star alongside Chloë Sevigny, Nicholas Chavez and Cooper Koch in the series.

Bardem abd Sevigny will respectively play Jose and Kitty Menendez, the Beverly Hills couple murdered by sons Lyle (Chavez) and Erik (Koch).

The new season comes on the heels of Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which starred Evan Peters as the notorious serial killer and quickly became one of Netflix’s most popular English-language series ever when it debuted in September 2022.

It was in 1989 that Lyle and Erik Menendez murdered parents Jose and Kitty in their L.A.-area home. Although not initially looked at as prime suspects, they came under investigation in the months following and eventually confessed to parricide, at the same time claiming that their actions stemmed from years of physical, emotional and sexual abuse at the hands of their father. Their first of two trials, broadcast on Court TV, had the nation in its grip, much like the 1994 trial of O.J. Simpson, and is believed to have played a part in the modern-day fascination with true crime.

The prosecution argued that the pair were in fact seeking to inherit their father’s multimillion-dollar estate, and the Menendez brothers were convicted in 1996 and sentenced to life imprisonment, without the possibility of parole, though the case continues to unfold to this day. Last summer, Erik and Lyle filed documents in hopes of a new hearing, following former Menudo bandmember Roy Rosselló’s claim that he was molested by José Menendez at the age of 14.

Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is one of two forthcoming seasons of the Monster anthology announced as of November 2022. The story at the center of the third chapter has not yet been revealed. In addition to the scripted series on the Menendez brothers, Netflix has a feature doc on the duo in the works, brought to life with exclusive access to the subjects.

Most recently portraying King Triton in Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Bardem will next be seen in Dune: Part Two, out March 1 following a strike-imposed delay, and Apple’s Formula 1 racing movie with Brad Pitt.

Warner Bros. & Legendary Move Up Release Date of Javier Bardem’s “Dune: Part Two” to March 1

Javier Bardem has been given his March-ing orders for his highly-anticipated film.

Warner Bros. and Legendary have moved up the release of Denis Villenueve’s Dune: Part Two, starring the 54-year-old Spanish Oscar-winning actor.

The second half of the space epic will now open nationwide on March 1.

The new date is two weeks earlier than the March 15 date Warner Bros. set in August when it moved Dune: Part Two out of 2023 amid the Hollywood strikes. The sequel was originally set to open on November 3.

Dune: Part Two is the second chapter in Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal science-fiction novel.

The first film opened simultaneously in theaters and on Max (then known as HBO Max) in November 2021 and grossed $402 million at the worldwide box office. It also earned 10 Academy Award nominations, including best picture, and won the Oscars for original score, sound, film editing, cinematography, production design and visual effects.

In addition to Bardem, Villeneuve’s original Dune cast members Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgård and Charlotte Rampling are all back for the second chapter.

Newcomers to the franchise include Christopher Walken, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh and Léa Seydoux.

“I just I loved the first film so much,” Butler previously told Variety about stepping into Villeneuve’s world. “It was this cinematic masterpiece, so the idea of getting to be a part of that world is just incredibly exciting and Denis is one of my favorite filmmakers and just an amazing human being. He’s so kind and I’m a fan of every one of those actors in the film, so I I felt really honored.”

In a recent interview with Empire, Villeneuve shared his hopes for a third installment in the sci-fi epic film series, saying, “If I succeed in making a trilogy, that would be the dream.”

On his Dune: Part Three progress, Villeneuve teased, “I will say, there are words on paper.” The project would be based on Dune Messiah, the direct sequel to Dune author Frank Herbert’s 1965 original novel.

The official Dune: Part Two synopsis from Warner Bros. and Legendary reads: “This follow-up film will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.”

Warner Bros. Releases New Trailer for Javier Bardem’s “Dune: Part Two”

Warner Bros has released a new trailer for Dune: Part Two, starring the 54-year-old Spanish Oscar-winning actor as Stilgar.

Denis Villeneuve’s second film in a planned three-film saga is based on Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel.

The Warner/Legendary Pictures film is set to hit theaters on November 3, 2023.

Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides and Zendaya as Chani in the film, which picks up after the events of the first Dune, which bowed in 2021 and grossed more than $402 million at the global box office.

In addition to Chalamet, Zenday and Bardem, returning cast members also include Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Charlotte Rampling, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Stellan Skarsgård.

They’ll be joined by newcomers Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken and Léa Seydoux.

The middle film in the series finds Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen out for revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, Paul endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee (The film’s tagline is “Fury Will Rise”).

Villeneuve co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts from Herbert’s novel.

The new trailer, which comes after the first official trailer dropped in May following its showing at CinemaCon, shows off the scope that helped the original pic score 11 Oscar nominations including Best Picture.

Dune: Part One won six Oscars in the crafts categories and returns several from that team here, including editor Joe Walker, production designer Patrice Vermette, composer Hans Zimmer and VFX supervisor Paul Lambert. Costume designer Jacqueline West, who was nominated last go-around, also returns.
