Disney’s “Encanto” Soundtrack, Featuring Songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Rises to No. 1 on Billboard 200

Lin-Manuel Miranda has left America encantado

The soundtrack to the Walt Disney animated musical film Encanto, featuring songs written by the 41-year-old Puerto Rican actor, songwriter, singer, playwright, producer, and film director, has surged to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart dated January 15.

EncantoThe Encanto soundtrack jumps 7-1 in its sixth week on the list.

It’s the first soundtrack to hit No. 1 in more than two years – since Disney’s Frozen II chilled atop the list for one week, on the chart dated December 14, 2019.

Encanto earned 72,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending Januaruy 6 (up 76%), according to MRC Data. Streaming activity of the set’s songs drove the majority of that unit sum.

Of Encanto’s 72,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending January 6, SEA units comprise 58,000 (up 91%; equaling 87.69 million on-demand official streams of the set’s tracks), album sales comprise 11,000 (up 33%) and TEA units comprise 3,000 (up 33%).

The album’s two most popular songs of the week, by SEA units, are “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” and “Surface Pressure.” “Bruno” and “Surface” both debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated January 8 and should jump up the list dated January 15.

The Encanto soundtrack, with songs written by Miranda and scores by Germaine Franco, was released on Nov. 19, before the film arrived in U.S. theaters on November 24. The movie was released via the Disney+ streaming service a month later — which is likely helping the album’s exposure and promotion in the last two tracking weeks. A week ago, the album leaped 110-7 after its premiere on Disney+.

Encanto is just the sixth animated film soundtrack to hit No. 1 since the Billboard 200 began regularly publishing on a weekly basis in 1956. Encanto follows Frozen II (one week at No. 1, 2019), Frozen (13 weeks, 2014), Jack Johnson’s Curious George (one, 2006), Pocahontas (one, 1995) and The Lion King (10, 1994-95). (All but Curious George are Disney films.)

Trujillo Wins Outstanding Choreography Prize at Outer Critics Circle Awards

Sergio Trujillo is a Critics’ choice…

The Colombian choreographer earned Outstanding Choreography honors at this year’s Outer Critics Circle Awards.

Sergio Trujillo

Trujillo, a Tony Awards nominee this year, earned the recognition for his work on On Your Feet! The Emilio and Gloria Estefan Musical.

Meanwhile, Marco Ramirez won the John Gassner Award, which is presented for an American play, preferably by a new playwright, for penning The Royale.

The Latino playwright/author made his off-Broadway debut with the Lincoln Center Theater opening of the new drama about the early life of the boxer Jack Johnson.

The Outer Critics Circle’s prizes serve as an imperfect bellwether for the Tony Awards, since a number of significant titles in the Tony race – most notably Hamilton – weren’t eligible for the OCCs this year because they were recognized in prior incarnations and in previous years. Another Tony player, Shuffle Along, didn’t open in time to be considered by the OCCs.

OCC winners will receive awards at a May 26 ceremony at Sardi’s.

Correy Perform’s Coca-Cola’s 2014 FIFA World Cup Anthem

It appears that the world is David Correy’s…

The 26-year-old Brazilian American singer and former The X Factor contestant has been chosen to record Coca-Cola‘s global 2014 FIFA World Cup anthem.

David Correy

Correy performs the song, entitled “The World is Ours,” with the Brazilian percussion troupe Monobloco.

The soccer-themed track features a pumped up pop melody tethered by the Brazilian roots rhythms commonly identified with carnival, as well as inspirational lyrics readymade for stadium sing-alongs.

“The World is Ours” will be the theme of the brand’s international “World’s Cup” campaign. The tournament year anthem was written by song-writing team Rock Mafia (Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez) and produced by Brazilian-born Mario Caldato Jr., who has worked with the Beastie Boys, Jack Johnson, and Brazilian artists including Seu Jorge and Bebel Gilberto.

“We always try to bring to light our campaign ideas through music and in 2014 we’re talking about the World Cup and bringing the world together,” says Joe Belliotti, Director of Global Entertainment Marketing at Coca-Cola. “That is what the song was meant to do from a lyric perspective. From a music perspective, we wanted the music to stay very authentic to Brazil, but in an original way that would resonate with an audience internationally…we’re taking that rhythm of Brazil and pairing it with just a great mainstream song.”

Correy, best known as a 2012 The X Factor finalist who re-connected with his Brazilian birth mother after appearing on the reality show, will debut the song live tomorrow on Corcovado Mountain above Rio de Janeiro.

“It’s such a feel-good song,” says Correy, whose tattoos include one on his back of a Brazilian flag covering a hand making the metal horns sign, which is spotlighted on the single’s cover photo. He opens the 2:38 minute track with a call to “kick it to the world.”

“I think with the rhythms, the song, the message, it’s going to touch a lot of people,” he says.

Tomorrow’s performance of the song will mark the opening of the Coke-sponsored World Cup Trophy tour, which takes the  tournament trophy to 88 countries.

Correy and Monobloco will perform the anthem at select stops on the tour, where fans’ voices will be recorded and added to future mixes. Artists from different countries will also collaborate with Correy on recordings of the song in different languages. A Portuguese version called “Tu Mundo,” with vocals by Brazilian singer Gaby Amarantos was released in June in Brazil. That song did not include Correy’s vocals.

“The World is Ours” will be immediately available for streaming on Coca-Cola partner Spotify, and will later be sold widely as a download at digital outlets. The song will be featured in Coke’s World Cup-themed TV ads and mobile campaigns.

“The World of Ours” is the first major anthem to be unveiled for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, which opens in Sao Paulo on June 12. FIFA has yet to announce the official World Cup anthem.
