Estrella Burgos Wins Third Straight Title at the Ecuador Open

The 36-year-old Dominican tennis player won his third straight title at the Ecuador Open, beating Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi in a hard-fought three sets.

Estrella Burgos lost the first set in a tiebreak, but bounced back to take the match 6-7 (2), 7-5, 7-6 (6).

Sunday’s title was the third in ATP singles for the unseeded Dominican. They’ve all come on clay in Quito.

The third-seeded Lorenzi was gunning for his second ATP singles title after winning last year on clay in Kitzbuhel, Austria.

Estrella Burgos advanced with victories over top-seeded Ivo Karlovic of Croatia, Federico Gaio of Italy and No. 4 Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil.

The 25-year-old Spanish tennis player defeated Nikola Mektic 7-6 (4), 6-1, 6-4 as Spain edged depleted Croatia to reach the quarterfinals on Sunday with a 3-2 victory.

Earlier Sunday, Roberto Bautista Agut defeated Croatia’s Franko Skugor 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-6 (6) to put Spain level at 2-2 and send the match into the deciding rubber.
Croatia won the doubles on Saturday for a surprise 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series.

Croatia, last year’s World Group runner-up, played with a reserve lineup as it missed its four top players — Marin Cilic, Ivo Karlovic, Borna Coric and Ivan Dodig.

Spain was without Rafael Nadal.

Spain will play Serbia in the quarterfinals which completed its 4-1 rout of Russia on Sunday.

Ferrer Claims His 22nd Career Title at the Qatar Open

David Ferrer has earned his first title of 2015…

The 32-year-old Spanish tennis player beat Tomas Berdych 6-4, 7-5 in the final of the Qatar Open on Saturday to claim his 22nd career title.

Ferrer, the tournament’s top seed, has now won at least one title in six consecutive years.

“The performance, it was very good,” said Ferrer , currently ranked No. 10 in the world. “I’m happy, because it never is easy to begin the season winning one tournament.”

Ferrer improved his record to 8-5 against Berdych, whose finals record slumped to 10-15.

Berdych was not surprised by the quality of play from Ferrer, a day after the Spaniard battled through three tiebreak sets against seventh-seeded Ivo Karlovic of Croatia in the semifinals.

“First of all, David is never tired,” Berdych said. “Not after the match he played yesterday after two-and-a-half hours. I have seen him playing five hours and then he played the next day.”

Ferrer began the final by breaking the third-seeded Berdych in the first game, and raced to 4-1.

Berdych hadn’t dropped his serve in 34 service games through the semifinals, but surrendered four of eight service break opportunities to Ferrer.

In the second set, Berdych had three set points on Ferrer’s serve in the 10th game, but the Spaniard managed to hold for 5-5.

“In important points I got a little bit lucky,” Ferrer said. “I tried to be confident in the bad moments. I played very good in those moments.”

Ferrer received the advantage when Berdych double-faulted on a second break point he faced in the 11th game.

Ferrer Reaches Fifth Straight Quarterfinals at the Mexican Open

David Ferrer has extended his quarterfinals appearance streak at the Mexican Open.

The 31-year-old Spanish tenista, the tournament’s top seed, defeated his compatriot Feliciano Lopez 7-6 (1), 6-2 on Wednesday to advance to his fifth-straight quarterfinals at the Mexican tournament.

Ferrer, trying to win his fourth title on Mexican soil, will next play South Africa’s Kevin Anderson, who eliminated American Sam Querrey,7-6 (2), 6-4.

Also Wednesday, Gilles Simon (6) of France beat Donald Young of the United States 6-4, 6-3, Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov downed Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 6-4 and Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic defeated Dudi Sela of Israel 7-6 (4), 6-2.

Falla Reaches the Final at the Claro Open Colombia

Alejandro Falla is one step closer to winning his first-ever ATP Tour title… And, he could earn it at home.

The 29-year-old Colombian tennis player, a Bogota resident, beat Canada’s Vasek Pospisil 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the Claro Open Colombia final.

To reach the semifinals, Falla defeated the tournament’s top seed, Croatia’s Janko Tipsarevic.

The hometown favorite will face Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic on Sunday in the hard-court tournament at Centro de Alto Rendimiento in Bogota.

Karlovic beat second-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-3.

Falla Defeats Top Seed to Reach Claro Open Colombia Semifinals

The 29-year-old Colombian tennis pro defeated top-seated Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 on Friday night to advance to the Claro Open Colombia semifinals in his native country.

Falla, a Bogota resident, is seeking his first ATP Tour title

Falla will next face Canada’s Vasek Pospisil on Saturday in the hard-court tournament at Centro de Alto Rendimiento. Pospisil beat Italy’s Matteo Viola 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Falla, currently ranked No. 122 in the world, has yet to reach the finals in a tournament. He’s now just one win away from doing so, and on his home turf no less.

In the afternoon quarterfinals, second-seeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa beat sixth-seeded Santiago Giraldo of Colombia 6-3, 6-3, and Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic topped fifth-seeded Adrian Mannarino of France 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3).
