Arjona’s Website Crashes in 30 Seconds After 100,000 Fans Download His New Single

Ricardo Arjona knows how to shut down the Internet…

The 52-year-old Guatemalan singer-songwriter’s website, ricardoarjona.com, collapsed after he allowed fans to download his new single, “Nada es como tu,” for free on Friday.

Ricardo Arjona

Arjona announced on his social media pages that he’d be offering “Nada es como tu” exclusively on his website, and not on iTunes (“No en iTunes,” read the banners on his social sites).

The single was offered as a free download for two hours on Friday.

Within 30 seconds, 100,000 users went on the website in an effort to download the single, causing it to crash.

“We had prepared for big traffic, but never for what is happening,” Arjona posted on his page. “We are working on making the single available to you.”

The new single hails from Arjona’s all acoustic album, Apague la luz y escuche… It features Arjona singing simply with his guitar and little else.

“Nada es como tu” will be available for sale beginning Monday (June 20), only on Arjona’s website.

This isn’t the first time Arjona has tried a maverick move. Several years ago, the Guatemalan star announced he would record and release his music independently, after years on major labels. Arjona’s most recent album, Viaje, was released on his own label, Metamorfosis, with distribution from Sony.

Sanchez Releases New Yuletide EP, “Christmas with Jessica”

Jessica Sanchez is getting into the holiday spirit…

The 20-year-old half-Mexican American singer and former American Idol finalist has released a new yuletide EP, Christmas with Jessica.

Jessica Sanchez

“I have always wanted to do a Christmas album and covers,” Sanchez tells Billboard. “It’s just a gift for my fans because I love them.”

Recorded in just two days, the independently-released six song EP includes Sanchez performing a soulful rendition of Eartha Kitt’s classic, “Santa Baby,” a jubilant “Joy to the World” and a soaring version of “Ave Maria.”

The record, produced by James Daniels and executive produced by LA Mic Studios and Wise Owl Media Group, celebrates Sanchez’s love of the holiday season.

Adding to the holiday merriment is the announcement that the Season 11 runner-up will join other Idols Kris Allen, Pia Toscano, Ruben Studdard, Tamyra Gray, Elliott Yamin, Ayla Brown and Paris Bennett for the Orange County Christmas Extravaganza on December 23.

Former judge Randy Jackson is also scheduled to appear at the show — a benefit for the Jessie Reese Foundation — which supports children fighting cancer.

The show will be broadcast live from the Segerstrom Center for the Arts on KDOC TV and other markets from 8 to 10 p.m.

“Christmas is my favorite holiday because you spend time with family,” she said. “I love the decorations, the music, and buying gifts for people. Everything about Christmas is the best.”

“Santa Baby” was the California native’s personal pick, and she chose to throw back to Kitt’s version when she went into the studio.

“I went with the earlier version, the classic, which is very soft spoken but sexy at the same time,” she said. “It was the most fun to record. There is so much room to mess around with the song, but I tried to keep it as classic as possible.”

Recording the EP had its challenges, Sanchez said.

“I was actually really sick during that time and I was worried how my voice would sound. I was afraid to put this EP out because my voice was not fully there and I’m such a perfectionist I don’t like putting anything out that is not my best,” she said. “But I had to put that aside and remember that this is for my fans and my supporters and it’s a little EP for them. I hope that it was good enough.”

In addition to the record, the singer has also launched her first merchandise store on her Website, Jessicasanchez.bigcartel.com. Sanchez oversaw the selection of T-shirts, crop tops, hoodies, and a signature “snapback hat” is on sale on the Website until Jan. 2.

“We looked through a couple of things and I personally handpicked what I wanted. I have always wanted to do clothing because I’m a typical girl and I love clothes and shoes,” she said. “That was a lot of fun and I’m really happy with the way that it came out for my first  pieces of merch. The quality is nice, too.”

When the holiday season is over, Sanchez is launching straight into 2016 with plans for the follow-up to her debut album, Me, You and the Music.  The record, she said, will be more R&B “rhythmic pop” or “more soulful Tinashe.”

“I’m very excited to be working on the music that I really love,” she said.

The entertainer — who has signed on with new manager Mark Lamica — has more plans for 2016, including exploring acting roles, endorsements, and a possible return to Idol.  Sanchez said she is “sad” to see the Fox show ending, but hinted she “might make an appearance” before the final curtain.

“It was a big part of my life. It felt like I was on that show for years, and being in that Idol bubble it felt like a family with the staff and the judges and the contestants, so it’s sad seeing it end,” she said. “But I know they will be going out with a bang. This is their final season and they are going to kill it. I’m excited for that.”

With all that ahead of her, Sanchez has one New Years Resolution she has yet to conquer.

“Every single year I tell myself I am going to drive. It never happens,” she said. “I don’t know how to drive. I am already 20. This needs to happen.”

Christmas with Jessica is available on CDBaby, iTunes Amazon.com and Google.

Café Tacvba to Receive Icon Award at This Year’s La Musa Awards

There’s no doubt Café Tacvba is one of the Latin music world’s most iconic bands. And, now they have the award to prove it.

The trailblazing Mexican alt-rockers will be honored with the Icon Award at the La Musa Awards, which will take place on October 15 at The Fillmore Miami Beach Jackie Gleason Theatre in Miami Beach.

Café Tacvba

The icon designation is fitting for a band that, over the last 25 years, helped elevate rock by fusing it with hip-hop, electronic music, and folkloric sounds.

Recently, the act – consisting of Rubén Albarrán, Emmanuel “Meme” del Real, José Alfredo “Joselo” Rangel, and Enrique “Quique” Rangel – celebrated the 20th anniversary of its seminal album Re, which revolutionized rock en español.

Their most recent album, El Objeto Antes Llamado Disco, was deemed the Best Latin Album of 2012 by iTunes.

Café Tacvba will also perform during the awards show, produced by the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame (LSHOF). The non-profit was founded by renowned songwriters/composers Desmond Child and Rudy Perez in 2012 to honor their peers who have impacted music on a global scale.

Cuban music mogul Emilio Estefan, Chilean singer/songwriter Myriam Hernandez, Argentine composer/performer Gustavo Santaolalla, Argentine singer/songwriter Diego Torres, Colombian songwriter Hector Ochoa Cardenas and Salvadoran singer/songwriter Alvaro Torres are the six music luminaries being inducted into the LSHOF during this year’s ceremony. Quincy Jones will receive the Desi Arnaz Pioneer Award while Chilean rock icon Beto Cuevas will be recognized with a special La Musa Conquistador Award.

Tickets for this year’s gala, hosted by actor/singer Carlos Ponce, are on sale via latinsonghall.com.

Justice Inks Talent Deal with Fox & 20th Century Fox Television

It looks like Victoria Justice’s next television appearance will be on Fox.

The 22-year-old half-Puerto Rican actress/singer has signed a talent deal with Fox and 20th Century Fox Television.

Victoria Justice

As part of the pact, the studio and network will develop joint projects featuring roles specifically tailored for the former Nickelodeon star.

They will also be able to have Justice guest star on existing Fox/20th television series.

The network and studio have young female ensemble horror comedy Scream Queens, and Justice’s background as a recording artist would also make her a good fit for music-fueled projects like Empire and Urban Cowboy

Justice has toplined her own series both on the comedy and drama side with the Nickelodeon sitcom Victorious and MTV thriller Eye Candy.

“We’re thrilled to bring Victoria Justice into the fold as we develop our next round of fresh, young and vibrant material that can be tailored to her distinct point of view and considerable talent,” said Sharon Klein, 20th Century Fox Television’s EVP Casting. “She has an incredibly relevant fan base and major social media presence, making this a truly exciting partnership with unlimited options.”

Justice will next star in the indie romantic comedy Naomi + Ely’s No Kiss List, which will be released September 18 on iTunes.

She’ll also star in this fall’s high school comedy The Outskirts, opening wide November 6.

Her series credits also include Zoey 101 and iCarly

De Leon to Release Sophomore Album “Dark Tales” via Standby Records

Andrew De Leon has a new label…

The goth-garbed Latino singer, an America’s Got Talent semifinalist who wowed audiences with his operatic vocals during his 2012 audition, has signed a label deal for his second album, Dark Tales.

Andrew De Leon

A three-song teaser EP will be available on August 21 on iTunes from Standby Records, home to such bands as Black Veil Brides and As Blood Runs Black.

De Leon independently released his first album, Black Lights — a mix of classical, rock, pop and goth opera — as a solo artist in 2013. He plans to release Dark Tales in 2016. It’s his first recording with his band, which includes lead guitarist/composer Hunter Fisher and guitarist John Paul Grasso.

“I was OK being just a solo artist for a while, but I quickly realized that I had too much of a vision to limit myself. The sound I was going for was way too big to take on all alone,” says De Leon. “The idea of grouping a band happened quickly after, and I’m very happy with that decision. There’s more orchestration with the music now, and the band completely gets the musical direction.”

De Leon signed with Standby Records when the label approached him a year after releasing Black Lights. He was convinced to sign with the company after having a phone conversation with CEO/owner Neil Sheehan. “I was really impressed with the direction of the label. He made it very clear that the goal of Standby Records was to allow the artist to be as creative as possible, and I was immediately sold on the idea,” says the singer. “I think artistic freedom is very important, so it only made sense to join Standby.”

De Leon says he was seeking a more pop/dance-driven sound with his first record, listening to EDM for inspiration. But his second effort is more rock-oriented.

Black Lights “ended up being somewhat of a variety record, which makes sense since my shows are kind of the same way,” he says. “After that release the fans were really pleased, and I noticed their favorite tracks were the rock tracks. I quickly remembered that at a much younger age rock music was my passion and that led me to wanting to take that path with my vocals. With Dark Tales I was able to do just that. I got together with my guitarist and came up with the concept of a heavy rock album. When writing the songs for Dark Tales we didn’t hold back any punches lyrically and musically. With Black Lights I took on a much nicer and appropriate approach, but with Dark Tales I just let it all out. There’s no more pop here. It’s all heavy rock.”

Even though De Leon belted out an incredible rendition of the soprano aria “O Mio Babbino Caro” on America’s Got Talent that brought the audience to its feet, he had never sung in public before that night. The YouTube clip of his audition has racked up more than 42 million views. Because he felt like an outcast, De Leon kept his love of singing to himself and practiced in his bedroom. His parents didn’t even know about his talent until they heard him perform at the show. Now De Leon is focusing on getting past the mindset of being a victim.

“The songs are very honest and dark, which is why I called them dark tales,” he says. “My previous music was mostly about feeling victimized and how to get through those kinds of struggles, but with Dark Tales I wanted to explore the side of me that wasn’t a victim. I wanted to get to know the monster inside and embrace it. So the songs on the EP talk about love, hate, betrayal, sexuality and other things I’ve experienced that I was too scared to write about before. Dark Tales is somewhat of an introduction to a scary story that seems to have no end.”

Ryan Cabrera has a big reason to a dance

The 32-year-old half-Colombian American singer’s latest track, “House on Fire,” has reached the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart.

Ryan Cabrera

The track, which was released to iTunes on October 22nd, is Cabrera’s first-ever Billboard chart-topper. He previously reached a career high of No. 4 on the Billboard Pop Songs chart with his debut single “On The Way Down” back in 2004.

“House on Fire” hails from Cabrera’s EP “Wake Up Beautiful,” which was released on March 3, 2015.

The album was released by Cabrera’s label Dynamite Music, which was founded by Mitchell Davis and Marco Liuzzo in partnership with Caroline Records and Universal Music Group.
