Juan Luis Guerra Earns 12th No. 1 on Billboard’s Tropical Airplay Chart with “Mambo 23”

Juan Luis Guerra has returned to the top of the charts…

The 66-year-old Dominican Grammy-winning musician, singer, composer and record producer is back at the summit of Billboard’s Tropical Airplay chart as “Mambo 23” advances 3-1 to lead the November 25-dated list.

Juan Luis GuerraThe new champ arrives nine years after he last led through “Tus Besos” in 2014, for one week in charge.

“Mambo 23” climbs to No. 1 with a 9% gain in audience impressions, to 4.45 million, earned during the November 10-16 tracking week, according to Luminate. The song, released September 22 via Rimas, is the first single from Guerra’s recently released EP Radio Güira.

With the new champ, Guerra collects his 12th No. 1 on Tropical Airplay and breaks a tie with India for the eighth-most, a score led by Marc Anthony with 35 champs since the ranking began in 1994.

Here’s the scoreboard:

35, Marc Anthony
29, Victor Manuelle
23, Prince Royce
18, Romeo Santos
14, Elvis Crespo
14, Gilberto Santa Rosa
13, Jerry Rivera
12, Juan Luis Guerra 440
11, India

Guerra last landed at the summit with “Tus Besos” in 2014. (He notched seven hits between “Tus Besos” and “Mambo 23,” including six top 10s.)

The nine-year span becomes the longest between No. 1s since Don Omar took an equal nine years (and eight months) to dominate Tropical Airplay with the one-week ruler “Dutty Love,” featuring Natti Natasha (April 2012) and “Se Menea,” with Nio García, (Dec. 2021).

“Mambo 23” rules the tropical ranking as it ejects Chayanne’s “Bailando Bachata” from its 14-week domination; along with Manuel Turizo’s “La Bachata,” the third-longest run this decade, both with 14 weeks atop.

The pair trail Prince Royce’s “Carita de Inocente” with 29 weeks at No. 1, the most in the 2020’s decade, and Daddy Yankee and Marc Anthony’s “De Vuelta Pa’ La Vuelta” (22 weeks in charge).

Elsewhere, “Mambo 23” lifts 25-21 on the overall Latin Airplay, Guerra’s highest rank since “Muchachita Linda” reached No. 15 in October 2015.

Romeo Santos Earns Sixth No. 1 on Billboard’s Tropical Albums Chart with “Formula, Vol. 3”

Romeo Santos has another chart-topping album on his resume…

The 41-year-old Puerto Rican and Dominican American singer-songwriter, known as The King of Bachata, is back at No. 1 on Billboard’s Tropical Albums chart as his latest LP, Fórmula, Vol. 3, tops the September 17-dated ranking — rising from its No. 8 debut a week earlier from less than one day of activity.

Romeo SantosIt’s his sixth straight No. 1 on the chart.

The album was released September 1 at 11:00 pm ET via Sony Music Latin, — one hour before most albums are typically released. (The September 17-dated chart reflects activity for the album in the September 2-8 tracking period, while the September 10 chart covered the August 25-September 1 frame.)

Fórmula, Vol. 3 rallies 8-1 in its second chart week with 26,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending September 8, according to Luminate.

The majority of the set’s sum derives from streaming-equivalent album units (23,000), equating 33.1 million official on-demand streams of the album’s songs. Three-thousand of the remaining total belongs to traditional album sales (2,000) and track-equivalent album units (1,000).

On the multimetric Tropical Albums chart as measured in equivalent album units, each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album.

Fórmula, Vol. 3 completes the Fórmula trilogy and lands slightly a decade after its maiden effort, Fórmula, Vol. 1, rose to No. 1 in its second week, where it held for 33 weeks (starting Nov. 26, 2011). Meanwhile, follow-up full-length Vol. 2 lifted 7-1 also in its second week to crown Tropical Albums for 116 weeks, the second-most (trailing Santos’ own Todavía Me Amas: Los Mejor de Aventura; 170 at No. 1) since the chart’s inception in 1985.

Further, Santos replaces himself at No. 1, sending Vol. 2 to No. 3, while Todavía Me Amas holds in the runner-up slot. Plus, the complete Fórmula series holds a spot in the chart’s top five, with Vol. 1 jumping 5-4 on the current chart.

Vol. 3 gives Santos his sixth straight No. 1 on Tropical Albums. He ties with India and Prince Royce for the fourth-most among tropical soloists.

Here’s the scoreboard:

12, Gilberto Santa Rosa
12, Victor Manuelle
9, Marc Anthony
6, India
6, Prince Royce
6, Romeo Santos
5, Eddie Santiago
5, Elvis Crespo
5, Jerry Rivera

Elsewhere, Fórmula, Vol. 3 debuts at No. 2 on the overall Top Latin Albums ranking, his sixth consecutive top 10 there. It’s his first chart appearance since Utopía launched at No. 1 in 2019.

It also opens at No. 10 on the overall Billboard 200, his fourth top 10 there and first top-tier visit since 2017 (Golden, No. 10 debut and peak).

Anthony to Headline Mexico’s International Salsa Festival with Ruben Blades

Marc Anthony will join Ruben Blades in giving the people of Veracruz plenty of reason to salsa…

The 44-year-old Puerto Rican singer and 64-year-old Panamanian singer will headline a salsa festival next month in the Mexican state, according to organizers.

Marc Anthony

The third edition of the International Salsa Festival is considered a must-attend function for fans of the musical genre, Anselmo Estandia – mayor of the city of Boca del Rio, where the event will be held – told Efe.

Roughly 150,000 people are expected to turn up for the series of free concerts from May 16-19.

“We’re bringing artists of the highest level, some of whom have already participated in past editions and remain very interested in participating … due to the large turnout of thousands of people,” said Estandia.

In addition to Anthony and Blades, Oscar de Leon, Alberto Barros, Tito Nieves, Grupo Niche, Porfi Balboa, N’Klave, Sonora Carruseles, India and Gerry Espinosa are among the artists scheduled to perform at the festival.

According to the mayor, 100,000 people from Mexico, the United States, Canada, Spain and several South American countries attended last year’s edition.

That huge turnout translated into a $48.7 million injection into the local economy.

Although Boca del Rio is “safe,” anti-crime efforts will be bolstered due to the large number of visitors, the mayor said.

Additional state police and Mexican armed forces have been deployed in the Gulf coast state since October 2011 as part of the Safe Veracruz program, with a particular focus on the Veracruz-Boca del Rio metropolitan area.

Federal and state authorities credit that initiative with lowering the level of organized crime-related violence in the region.
