Ignacio Martin Goenaga is returning home to a hero’s welcome…
Spain became the final team to seal their place in the men’s Olympic Sevens with a dramatic victory at the World Rugby Olympic Repechage tournament in Monaco.
In a winner-takes-all final against Samoa, it took a last-second try from the 32-year-old Spanish rugby player to seal a 22-19 victory at Stade Louis II.
Spain had jumped out to a 12-0 lead after five minutes, but three tries by the Samoans established a 19-12 lead with five minutes remaining, only for Spain to snatch victory in memorable fashion.
They now join Fiji, Great Britain, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina, USA, France, Japan, Australia, Kenya and hosts Brazil in the men’s tournament in Rio.
