Jeirmarie Osorio to Take Part in The Casting Society’s “Mi Gente! For Latine Actors” Town Hall

Jeirmarie Osorio is helping shine a spotlight on the shortage of Latinx actors in Hollywood.

The 33-year-old Puerto Rican actress and singer will take part in The Casting Society of America’s town hall for Latino actors.

Jeirmarie OsorioThe event is part of the organization’s ongoing Commitment to Equity in Entertainment in Casting Initiative, which is designed “to effect concrete change in how actors in historically underrepresented communities are afforded access to job opportunities.”

The town hall, titled ¡Mi Gente! For Latine Actors and with sponsorship from SAG-AFTRA, will be held virtually on Wednesday, December 7 at noon PT. For complete details, click here.

In recent years, the group has held similar town halls for African Americans, Asian Pacific Islanders, Native Americans and military veterans.

Spearheaded by board member Candido Cornejo, panelists will include casting directors Carla Hool, Victor Vasquez and Erika Sable Flores; director Luis Valdez; agent Natalie Moran; producers Greta Talia Fuentes and Jolene Rodriguez; Osorio; manager Ivan De Paz; and casting executive Cesar Rocha. Univision correspondent Daniela Ganoza will serve as co-moderator.

“The CSA Latinx initiative sheds light on the immense need to address the lack of Latinx representation in Hollywood,” Hool said in a statement. “Not only that, it needs to play a very needed role in educating our industry in the fact that we, the Latine community, are a very diverse group of people. It is time we are let out of the box we have been put into and most importantly, I hope we can get to a point where we drop labels and can all become truly equal.”

“As someone working on the front lines with underserved communities and underrepresented youth, it feels very important to me to bring attention to the full meaning of the word ‘inclusion,’” said Flores, who is also executive director of the Youth Cinema Project. “We have to do better. There are entire communities still being left out of careers in entertainment in front and behind the camera. I’m grateful that CSA is willing to have this conversation.”

“I’m beyond grateful to the extraordinary people that are coming together for this important conversation,” Cornejo said. “It’s amazing to have some of these veterans I’ve looked up to join together with some of my peers and colleagues that are true guerreros (warriors) for our community. We must come together as one unified strong voice so that our colleagues can listen in order to understand what is still going on today. It’s a lived experience that we share as a Latine community that is often misrepresented, and it’s important to me for us to rectify that as much as we can.”

Froy Gutierrez to Star in Renny Harlin’s Lionsgate “The Strangers” Remake

It’s a strange(r) time Froy Gutierrez

The 24-year-old Mexican American actor will star opposite Madelaine Petsch and Gabriel Basso in a Lionsgate remake of the 2008 horror film The Strangers, which has entered production in Slovakia.

Froy GutierrezRenny Harlin is directing the film, which will be the first in a trilogy, having locked in a deal to helm the subsequent pair.

The original film The Strangers was a home invasion film that Bryan Bertino wrote and directed in his feature debut, with Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman starring.

It registered as a sleeper hit upon its May 2008 release via Universal Pictures and came to be appreciated in the years following as a cult classic, with the sequel The Strangers: Prey at Night being released in March 2018.

The new Strangers film will follow Petsch’s character as she drives cross-country with her longtime boyfriend (Gutierrez) to begin a new life in the Pacific Northwest. When their car breaks down in Venus, Oregon, they’re forced to spend the night in a secluded Airbnb, where they are terrorized from dusk till dawn by three masked strangers.

Lionsgate plans from there to expand the story in new and unexpected ways with its sequels.

Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland wrote the franchise launcher, to be distributed worldwide by Lionsgate.

“My mother instilled the love of movies in me through the world of Hitchcock and other masters of suspense and horror. My breakthrough to Hollywood happened with the success of A Nightmare on Elm Street 4,” noted Harlin. “It is only fitting that I get to return to my favorite genre with the incredibly well written trilogy of The Strangers. The characters and the storyline are all grounded in reality and offer me an endless tapestry of haunting visuals in bringing these movies alive.”

“When setting out to remake The Strangers, we felt there was a bigger story to be told, which could be as powerful, chilling, and terrifying as the original and could really expand that world,” said Solomon. “Shooting this story as a trilogy allows us to create a hyperreal and terrifying character study. We’re fortunate to be joining forces with Madelaine Petsch, an amazing talent whose character is the driving force of this story.”

“When you’ve got two horror aficionados like Courtney Solomon and Renny Harlin coming together, you’ve got all you need to create some incredibly smart, lean-forward-in-your-seat, addictively thrilling entertainment,” said Mark Canton. “Fans of the original film will be blown away; new audiences will discover the intensely unnerving world of The Strangers.”

The Strangers taps into such primal fears that it will always be relevant,” added Eda Kowan, Lionsgate’s EVP of Acquisitions & Co-Productions. “But what truly sets this project apart is the way the filmmakers have expanded the story and given these characters a new life.”

Gutierrez plays Jamie Henson on the Freeform series Cruel Summer, which has been renewed for a second season, and has also been seen on shows like Light as a FeatherTeen Wolf and One Day at a Time. Also coming up for the actor is the long anticipated Hocus Pocus 2, which is slated for release on Disney+ on September 30th.

Netflix Releases First Footage of “Blonde,” Featuring Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe

It’s Ana de Armasblonde-ing moment…

Netflix has released the first footage from Andrew Dominik’s Blonde, starring the 34-year-old Cuban actress as Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe.

Ana de Armas, Blonde, Marilyn MonroeThe film, based on the bestselling novel by Joyce Carol Oates, is notable for its NC-17 rating. The supporting cast includes Bobby Cannavale, Adrien Brody, Julianne Nicholson, Xavier Samuel and Evan Williams.

The official Blonde synopsis from Netflix reads: “[The film] boldly reimagines the life of one of Hollywood’s most enduring icons, Marilyn Monroe. From her volatile childhood as Norma Jeane, through her rise to stardom and romantic entanglements, Blonde blurs the lines of fact and fiction to explore the widening split between her public and private selves.”

Ana de Armas, Blonde, Marilyn Monroe“Andrew’s ambitions were very clear from the start — to present a version of Marilyn Monroe’s life through her lens,” de Armas recently told Netflix Queue. “He wanted the world to experience what it actually felt like to not only be Marilyn, but also Norma Jeane. I found that to be the most daring, unapologetic, and feminist take on her story that I had ever seen.”

“We worked on this film for hours, every single day for almost a year,” de Armas added. “I read Joyce’s novel, studied hundreds of photographs, videos, audio recordings, films — anything I could get my hands on. Every scene is inspired by an existing photograph. We’d pore over every detail in the photo and debate what was happening in it. The first question was always, ‘What was Norma Jeane feeling here?’ We wanted to tell the human side of her story. Fame is what made Marilyn the most visible person in the world, but it also made Norma the most invisible.”

Ana de Armas, Blonde, Marilyn MonroeThe film’s NC-17 rating reportedly created tension between Dominik and Netflix, but the filmmaker told ScreenDaily in February that he has “nothing but gratitude for Netflix,” noting the streaming giant supported the title even if it had some issues with its content.

Netflix “insisted” on bringing in Hereditary and Tenet editor Jennifer Lame to “curb the excesses of the movie.” Dominik added that Blonde is “a demanding movie. If the audience doesn’t like it, that’s the fucking audience’s problem. It’s not running for public office.”

Ana de Armas, Blonde, Marilyn MonroeSpeaking to Vulture in May, Dominik added about the film: “There’s something in it to offend everyone.”

Blonde releases globally on Netflix on September 23.
