Muguruza Named the No. 27 Seed at This Year’s Wimbledon

It’s another first for Garbine Muguruza

The 20-year-old half-Spanish-half-Venezuelan tennis player, who reached her first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinals at the French Open earlier this month, has been seeded No. 27 at this year’s Wimbledon.

Garbine Muguruza

All eyes will certainly be on Muguruza, currently ranked a career-high No. 27 in the world, following her impressive run at Roland Garros. She knocked out No. 1 seed Serena Williams in the second round and was thisclose to taking out eventual winner Maria Sharapova in the quarterfinals.

Muguruza, who won her first WTA tournament title at Australia’s Hobart Internationaltournament in January, will be competing for the second time at the All England Club. At last year’s Wimbledon, she lost in the second round to No. 25 seed Ekaterina Makarova 2-6, 7-6, 4-6.

But Muguruza isn’t the only Latina to earn a seed at this year’s Wimbledon.

Fellow French Open quarterfinalist Carla Suárez Navarro, who reached the women’s doubles semifinals with Muguruza at Roland Garros this year, is seeded No. 15 by the All England Club.

She reached the fourth round at the grass-court tournament last year, her best showing at Wimbledon. The then No. 19 seed lost to No. 8 seed Petra Kvitová 6-7, 3-6.

Tournament officials take a player’s grass-court record into account when assigning the men’s seedings.

Muguruza & Carla Suarez Navarro Advance to the French Open Women’s Doubles Semifinals

Garbiñe Muguruza’s sensational run in the women’s singles draw at the French Open may have come to an end in the quarterfinals… But she’s still in the title hunt at Roland Garros.

The 20-year-old half-Spanish-half-Venezuelan tennis player, considered one of the WTA’s rising stars, and her women’s doubles partner Carla Suarez Navarro beat Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik, the tournament’s No. 4 seeds, 6-4 6-4, in the quarterfinals to advance to the next round.

Peschke and Srebotnik, 2010 French Open finalists and 2011 Wimbledon champions, were the heavy favorites going into the match.

It’s only the third Grand Slam doubles appearance of her young career. Muguruza’s previous best showing in women’s doubles at a Grand Slam was a second round appearance at this year’s Australian Open.

Muguruza and Suarez Navarro will have a tough challenge in Friday’s semifinals. They’ll be facing off against this year’s No. 1 seeds, Taiwan’s Hsieh Suwei and China’s Peng Shuai.

In the last two years, she’s taken home doubles titles at the Hobart International in 2013 and this year’s Marrakech Grand Prix. She and current partner Suarez Navarro were the runners-up at last month’s Madrid Open.

Muguruza Advances to the Grand Prix SAR Semifinals

Garbine Muguruza is two wins away from earning her next WTA title…

The 20-year-old Venezuelan-Spanish defeated Israel’s Shahar Peer 6-3, 6-1 to reach the Grand Prix SAR semifinals in Morocco on Friday.

Muguruza, the tournament’s fifth seed, won seven straight games against Peer to clinch the first set and lead 5-0 in the second.

She’s enjoying a breakthrough season, as she clinched her first WTA title in January at the Hobart International and finished runner-up at the Brazil Cup in March.

Peer made five double faults and was able to hold serve only once.

Muguruza will next face fellow Spaniard Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor, who edged out Polona Hercog of Slovenia 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5).
