Netflix Renews JoAnna García Swisher’s Small Town Romantic Drama “Sweet Magnolias” for Fifth Season

JoAnna García Swisher’s Sweet life continues….

Netflic has renewed the small town romantic drama Sweet Magnolias, starring the 45-year-old half-Cuban American actress, for a fifth season.

Joanna Garcia SwisherSheryl J. Anderson will return as showrunner.

The news comes more than two and a half months after the release of Season 4.

Unlike previous renewals, the latest pickup was likely not as straightforward since the series, typically a reliable audience draw, spent only two weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10 for English-language series with its fourth season, peaking at #4. There have been shows with similar performance that have been canceled by the streamer.

Billed by Netflix as “comfort drama,” Sweet Magnolias, based on the book series by Sherryl Woods, follows lifelong best friends Maddie (Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott) and Helen (Heather Headley) as they juggle relationships, family, and careers in the charming small town of Serenity, SC.

Season 5, which is not labeled final by Netflix in the renewal announcement, will pick up after an eventful Season 4 finale, which ended on multiple cliffhangers, the biggest being Maddie’s pending move to New York for a publishing job.

“Can anything end the Magnolias?! Our ladies have seen each other through bigger challenges than physical distance,” Anderson told Deadline in an interview after the release of Season 4. “When you love someone, you want what’s best for them and want to help them reach that goal. True friends celebrate each other in times of victory, embolden each other to seize their passion, and then link arms to figure out logistics.”

Anderson executive produces with Dan Paulson, whose Daniel L. Paulson Productions is producing the series. Matt Drake will serve as an executive producer. Norman Buckley serves as co-executive producer.
