Harvey Guillén Among National Hispanic Media Coalition’s Impact Award Honorees

Harvey Guillén is being feted for his impact 

The National Hispanic Media Coalition has revealed the 2024 Impact Award honorees for its annual gala taking place on June 14, with the 34-year-old Mexican American actor among those being recognized.

Harvey GuillénAnnie Gonzalez (Flamin’ Hot) and Mayan Lopez (Lopez vs. Lopez) will host the celebration.

The Impact Awards is a part of the NHMC’s overall mission to spotlight the importance of accurate, fair and positive representation in media.

Each year, the organization honors individuals who are truly making an impact, shifting societal narratives and setting an example for Latine communities.

The 2024 honorees include:

Harvey Guillén, star of the hit FX series What We Do In The Shadows which is gearing up to premiere its sixth and final season. He will receive the Outstanding Performance in a Series Impact Award.

Issa López, a multi-hyphenate who most recently co-wrote and directed HBO’s True Detective Season 5 starring Jodie Foster. NHMC will recognize López’s achievements with the Trailblazer Impact Award.

Fede Alvarez, writer, director and executive producer of the upcoming feature Alien: Romulus, the seventh installment of the Alien franchise. NHMC will give him the Outstanding Film Director Impact Award.

Tatyana Ali, who most famously portrayed Ashley Banks in the hit comedy series The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, will receive the Advocacy Impact Award for her advocacy and policy work in maternal health and reproductive justice.

The Los Angeles Football Club will be honored with the Community Impact Award for their commitment to multiculturalism and creating change for marginalized communities

Tubi will be honored with the For the People Impact Award for its diverse programming providing a platform for Latine series showcasing authentic representations of our communities.

Freddy Rodriguez to Star in the Indie Horror/Thriller “You Lose You Die”

It’s lose and die for Freddy Rodriguez.

The 49-year-old Puerto Rican actor and Emmy-nominee will star in Averted Vision Pictures indie horror/thriller You Lose You Die, written by Carlos “Spiff TV” Suarez, who will also be making his feature directorial debut.

You Lose You Die follows sociopathic tech expert, Mr. Fantastik (Rodriguez), who runs a popular show on the dark web with two other sociopathic tech experts, Ms. Perfect (Fliehr) and Mr. Creep (Anthony Alvarez). On the show, thousands of viewers vote on games and challenges for prisoners to participate in. If the prisoners lose, viewers vote on the weapons the sociopaths use to kill them.

In addition to Rodriguez, Fliehr and Alvarez, the cast includes Josh Bredl as Mr. Large; Sophia Zimba as Kara; Ashley Hernandez as Julie; Alejandro Duran as Alfonso; Noah Crider as Chase; Marcella Acuña as Christie; Mercy Grant as Darling; and Lydia Faith Gomez as Jamie.

Rodriguez, Josue “Sway” Mendez and Ulysses Terrero serve as executive producers of You Lose You Die with Mendez also producing.

Rodriguez most recently starred as Detective Wayne Johnson in V/H/S/85 and Detective Greco in the Hulu series Wu-Tang: An American Saga. He’s best known for his portrayal of Federico Diaz in the hit HBO series Six Feet Under, which earned him an Emmy nomination in 2002 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Rodriguez was part of the main ensemble cast alongside Michael C. Hall, Peter Krause, Frances Conroy and Lauren Ambrose across the show’s 5 seasons.

Across his nearly three decades in the industry, his big screen credits also include roles in A Walk In The Clouds (1995), M. Night Shyamalan’s Lady in the Water (2006), Grindhouse (2007) for Robert Rodriguez and David Ayers’ directorial debutHarsh Times (2005).

Suarez most recently produced The Tax Collector, a gritty urban crime drama directed by David Ayer. He also contributed to the soundtrack production for Marvel’s acclaimed 2018 animated film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse—written by Phil Lord and Rodney Rothman—alongside reggaeton star Anuel. As a director, Suarez has helmed numerous music videos, showcasing artists such as Drake, Rick Ross and French Montana. In 2020, he founded Averted Vision Pictures LLC with a clear mission: to develop a dynamic hub for film and television production.

Rudy Valdez Signs with Inspire Entertainment

The Latino Emmy-winning documentary filmmaker  has signed with Inspire Entertainment for management.

Rudy ValdezMost recently, Valdez served as director, executive producer and cinematographer of the six-part docuseries Choir for Disney+, as well as Carlos, the Carlos Santana doc from Sony Pictures Classics and Imagine Documentaries.

Both films were official selections of the 2023 Tribeca Festival, with Carlos earning a 2023 Critics’ Choice Documentary Award nomination for Best Music Documentary.

Valdez’s documentary short Translators, produced in partnership with U.S. Bank, also recently debuted as an official selection of LALIFF and the Tribeca Festival, winning the Tribeca X Award for Best Short Documentary.

The filmmaker’s breakthrough project was The Sentence, the HBO doc marking his directorial debut. Shot over the course of a decade, the film watches as Valdez unpacks the aftermath of his sister Cindy’s 15-year sentence for conspiracy charges related to crimes committed by her deceased ex-boyfriend. Following its world premiere at Sundance 2018, where it won the U.S. Documentary Audience Award, the doc went on to win an Emmy for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking, also securing Valdez a nomination for Best New Director at the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards.

Valdez is at the helm of Bluff Road Films, an independent production company focused on creating meaningful social, cultural, and political stories while championing equity both on screen and behind the camera.

Currently, the company is teaming with Inspire to produce the feature doc Places, centered on Pacific Northwest artist Ben Joyce and his personal journey to expand his horizons of art, people, and family. In addition to directing, Valdez is producing the pic alongside Jason Spire and Meghan Schale.

Founded in 2002, Inspire Entertainment is also known for its work on the hit Netflix pic Outside the Wire and Peacock/Sony’s video game adaptation Twisted Metal, which is currently prepping to shoot its second season, among other projects.

Ismael Cruz Cordova to Star in Amazon MGM Studios’ Forthcoming Film “The Bluff”

Ismael Cruz Cordova is bluffing…

The 37-year-old Afro-Puerto Rican actor will star in Amazon MGM Studios’ forthcoming film The Bluff from director Frank E. Flowers.

Ismael Cruz CordovaCruz Cordova, who starred in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, is part of a roster of new cast additions that includes Safia Oakley-Green and Vedanten Naidoo.

The trio joins an ensemble led by Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Karl Urban.

The parts they’ll be playing are under wraps.

Written by Flowers and Joe Ballarini, the film set in the 19th century Caribbean follows a former female pirate (Chopra Jonas) who must protect her family when the mysterious sins of her past catch up to her.

Recently landing a Critics’ Choice Award nomination for his performance as Arondir on Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which is heading into its second season, Cordova has also previously been seen in Paramount+’s Finestkind, HBO’s miniseries The Undoing, Focus Features’ Mary Queen of Scots and Sony’s remake of Miss Bala.

Desmin Borges to Appear on New Season of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building”

The half-Puerto Rican actor has joined the cast of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building.

They join stars/executive producers Steve Martin, who also co-created the critically acclaimed series, Martin Short and Selena Gomez as well as new recurring players Zach Galifianakis, Molly Shannon, Eva Longoria and Eugene Levy and returning Meryl Streep in the upcoming fourth season.

All new characters will be integral to the twists and turns of the investigation into the murder of Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch), Charles-Haden Savage’s (Martin) stunt double from his years on the series Brazzos and its 2020 revival.

Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich revealed in a recent interview that the Only Murders In the Building trio, Charles, Oliver (Short) and Mabel (Gomez), will kick off the new season with a trip to Los Angeles before returning to The Arconia in their search of Sazz’s killer.

The Season 3 finale saw Loretta (Streep), Oliver and Mabel all contemplating a move to LA.

Produced by 20th TelevisionOnly Murders in the Building, Hulu’s most watched original comedy series, is co-created and co-written by Martin and John Hoffman who also executive produce alongside Short, Gomez, Dan Fogelman and Jess Rosenthal.

Borges is best known for his role as Edgar in five seasons of FX’s comedy You’re the Worst. He can currently be seen opposite Jennifer Lopez in the film Shotgun Weddingas well as in a series regular role in HBO’s The Time Traveler’s Wife.

His other recent credits include a season-long arc on Fox comedy Welcome To Flatch, Amazon’s Utopia, Netflix dramedy series Living with Yourself and the film Private Life.

He’ll next be seen in the film Hangdog, which premiered at the Provincetown Film Festival.

Newcomer Rebelo is a 2021 graduate of the drama program at Fordham University.  She recently starred in Our Dear Drug Lord at the Kirk Douglas Theatre.

The Dominican actress has landed a recurring role in HBO‘s Untitled Brad Ingelsby Task Force Project (working title).

Coral PeñaPeña is among a roster of new recurring cast members that includes Isaach De BankoléPhoebe Fox and Silvia Dionicio.

De Bankolé will play Father Daniel Georges, the oldest and best friend of lead Mark Ruffalo’s FBI agent Tom, who went to seminary with him. Fox portrays Tom’s biological daughter, Sara, who is deep in grief, with Dionicio as his adopted daughter, grappling with a family tragedy. Peña portrays Meg Coyle, the guidance counselor who works at Emily’s high school.

The Colombian actor has been cast in Reba McEntire’s untitled NBC comedy pilot.

The pilot follows Bobbie (McEntire) who inherits her father’s restaurant and is less than thrilled to discover that she has a new business partner in the half-sister she never knew she had.

Belissa Escobedo will star as Bobbie’s half-sister and Melissa Peterman will play a bartender at the tavern who wishes she was Bobbie’s sister.

Castelblanco will play Steve, the accountant for the tavern who does his work at the bar. He has OCD and doesn’t like change.

Castelblanco most recently starred as Gabriel Tovar, a series regular role, on ABC’s Hillary Swank-led drama Alaska Daily.

His additional credits include HBO’s Room 104, Netflix’s Dear White People and Scream Queens for Fox.

On the big screen, he was the lead of the independent feature Ganymede.
