Gravitas Ventures Acquires Distribution Rights to Fred Armisen’s Horror Comedy “Too Late”

Gravitas Ventures has acquired the U.S. and Canadian distribution rights to Too Late, a horror comedy starring the 54-year-old half-Venezuelan American actor/comedian.

The film marks the debut feature from director D.W. Thomas and writer Tom Becker.

In addition to Armisen, the film also stars Alyssa Limperis, Ron Lynch, Will Weldon, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Jenny Zigrino, Jack De Sena and Brooks Wheelan.

Set in the Los Angeles indie comedy scene, the film centers on Violet (Limperis), who works a thankless job as the assistant to Bob Devore (Lynch), famed comedian and host of the live variety show Too Late. But what only Violet knows is that Bob is a monster both literally and figuratively. Resigned to her fate, Violet is caught by surprise when she meets aspiring comedian Jimmy Rhodes (Weldon) and sparks fly. But as her feelings for Jimmy grow and Bob starts to doubt her loyalty, she and Jimmy could end up as Bob’s next meal.

The film will bow day and date in select theaters, and on digital platforms on VOD on June 25.

Gravitas Ventures Acquires Rights to Paz Vega’s Coming of Age Film “Chasing Wonders”

The wonders of Paz Vega will be heading to U.S. theaters…

Arclight Films’ Chasing Wonders, starring the 45-year-old Spanish actress, has locked North American distribution with Gravitas.

Directed by Paul Meins, the coming of age film will have a theatrical and on-demand release on June 4. Arclight is handling global sales for the film.

Set in the lush wine country landscapes of Australia and Spain, the heart-warming tale follows 12-year-old Savino, who, encouraged by his maternal grandfather to live a life of hope and possibility, takes off on the adventure of a lifetime to find the magical Emu Plains. His journey leads him to the heart of the human condition – learning to understand our parents’ past but not to be defined by it.

In addition to Vega, the film also stars Oscar nominee Edward James Olmos, Quim Gutierrez, Carmen Maura, Goya Award-winner Antonio de la Torre, Australia’s Jessica Marais, and making his feature film debut, Michael Crisafulli as Savino.

Australian award-winning screenwriter Judy Morris wrote the screenplay, which was shot over a five-year period.

Chasing Wonders made its World Premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival last year and has been selected for the Gold Coast Film Festival, where it will screen on April 18 and 22.

Gravitas Ventures has acquired the North American rights to Undergods, a fantasy thriller anthology movie directed by the Spanish filmmaker in his feature directorial debut.

A May 7 day-and-date release in theaters and on-demand is planned.

The film is a collection of darkly humorous fantasy tales about failed societies and doomed fortune told via a pair of corpse collectors who roam the desolate streets of an unknown city chatting humorously about their dreams, in which a series of men see their worlds fall apart through a visit from an unexpected stranger.

Gravitas Ventures Acquires North American Rights to Carlos Gomez’s Latest Film “Spiked”

Carlos Gomez’s latest project is getting a spike in attention…

Gravitas Ventures, a Red Arrow Studios company, has acquired North American rights to distribute the 59-year-old Latin America actor’s film Spiked, which hails from writer/director Juan Martinez Vera.

In addition to Gomez, who starred the in the short-lived series The Baker and the Beauty, the film also stars Aidan Quinn, Deirdre Lovejoy, Danay Garcia, Wendy Makkena, Lovensky Jean-Baptiste and Walter Belenky.

Sal Lopez, and Christopher Rich star in this indie feature drama.  

Spiked is a dramatic story rooted in the injustices that immigrant workers experience along the U.S./Mexico border. Principal photography on the indie feature was completed in 2019 on location in and around southern Arizona.

“Anchored by an outstanding performance by Aidan Quinn, Juan’s film integrates issues around immigration, law enforcement, and journalistic integrity into a compelling real-life narrative. The story follows John Wilson, a newspaper publisher in a small U.S./Mexico border town who denounces the abuse of power by local law enforcement. John has been at it for years and has made more than a few enemies and stepped on more than a few toes. Following the killing of an immigrant worker, an incident that the police are unwilling to do anything about, the newspaper publisher and his team take on the plight of the family and of the community to find those responsible and bring them to justice. At every turn, his efforts are thwarted by an uncooperative police chief who seems to have her own agenda. Matters escalate when John succumbs to a mysterious illness that threatens his life and his investigation.

Spiked follows the personal stories of characters along the border and how their lives collide when they attempt to fight for justice,” Martinez Vera said. “I was inspired to write and direct this project after hearing real-life stories of immigrants suffering abuse of power from law enforcement agencies some 20-years ago and incredibly moved by how relevant these stories are today as immigrant families continue to grapple with inhuman and unjust treatment. I’m thrilled that Gravitas will bring this film to audiences in the U.S., while we look toward announcing plans for distribution throughout Latin American and other markets.”

The film will be produced by Per Melita.

On March 26th, Gravitas will launch the film across multiple VOD platforms, including Amazon Prime, Apple iTunes, Vudu, Google Play, Vimeo, Gravitas Movies, and release on SVOD platforms to follow later this year.

Chile Selects Maite Alberdi’s “The Mole Agent” for International Oscar Consideration

The 37-year-old Chilean producer, director, documentarian and screenwriter’s documentary The Mole Agent will represent Chile in the International Oscar race this year.

The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival back in January. It follows a private investigator in Chile who hires someone to work as a mole at a retirement home where a client of his suspects the caretakers of elder abuse. Marcela Santibañez produced.

Gravitas Ventures is handling U.S. rights on the film, which is now streaming on Hulu. The movie will launch on POV on January 25.

The deadline for submissions to the Oscar race is December 1, with the 2021 ceremony scheduled to take place on April 25. The shortlist for the International Oscar will be unveiled February 9 and nominations will be announced March 15.

Gravitas Ventures Acquires North American Rights to Boneta’s Film “City of Dead Men”

Gravitas Ventures has acquired all North American rights to the psychological horror film City of Dead Men, starring the 25-year-old Mexican actor/singer.

Starring Boneta, Jackson Rathbone and newcomer Maria MesaCity of Dead Men follows Michael (Boneta), an American tourist named recently arrived in Medellin, Colombia, where he discovers he’s run completely out of money. Desperate for a quick fix to the problem, he meets a young Colombian girl (Mesa), who introduces him to a group of misfits and their mysterious leader (Rathbone), who live in an abandoned psychiatric hospital. At first accepting their friendship and shelter, it soon becomes clear something terrible happened in the hospital. The group living there now only feel immortal, pulling Michael into a dangerous dynamic that might kill him.

Along with the acquisition, a new trailer for the film has been released exclusively to Deadline.

“I grew up with death and violence all around me — Medellín was tough back then,” said producer Alejo Arango. “This is where the dead men come from; growing up thinking that you are already dead, believe me, living life like that is intense.”

“We are delighted to be partnered with Latam Pictures, Blue Fox Entertainment and the talented City of Dead Men filmmaking team on this gripping thriller,” says Dan Fisher, senior director of acquisitions for Gravitas Ventures.

Gravitas plans to release the film in select theaters and on-demand set on December 16. Directed by Kirk Sullivan and written by Andrew Poston, the film already is available for presale on iTunes.

Gravitas Ventures Acquires North American Rights to Dorough’s Documentary “Backstreet Boys: Show ‘em What You’re Made of”

Gravitas Ventures has acquired the North American theatrical, VOD, and DVD rights to the 41-year-old half-Puerto Rican singer and his fellow boy band members’ documentary Backstreet Boys: Show ‘em What You’re Made of.

From Stones in Exile and Scott Walker: 30th Century Man director Stephen Kijak, the film chronicles two years in the lives of Dorough, Nick Carter, Brian Littrell, AJ McLean and Kevin Richardson, the boy banders who rose to pop stardom with 1996’s eponymous debut album Backstreet Boys, paving the way for the likes of *NSYNC, 98 Degrees, and other favorites of the Tiger Beat set.

But in Littrell’s own words, “From 1992 to 2002 we were the biggest band in the world… Then it just stopped. And what do you do when you’re a full grown man in a boy band?”

Despite selling 130 million records, going gold and platinum in 46 countries, and earning eight Grammy nods, the boy band bubble burst for Littrell & Co. in 2000 after peaking with Millennium. Kijak’s film teases an intimate reveal of “new and old tensions that need confronting and resolving” as the quintet relive their glory days.

All five members produced the Pulse Films, K-Bahn LLC and Missing in Action Films production along with Mia Bays.

The documentary hits U.S. theaters and VOD on January 30 before London’s More2Screen rolls it out worldwide on February 26, and will make its broadcast debut in Spring 2015 via VH1.

Furlong’s “The Last Light” Acquired by Gravitas Ventures

Gravitas Ventures has picked up the North American rights to The Last Light, a horror thriller that features the 36-year-old part-Mexican actor as part of the cast.

Written and directed by Andrew Hyatt, The Last Light tells the story of seven strangers who find themselves trapped in an abandoned building after an unexplained apocalyptic event. Not only are they haunted by memories of what they’ve lost, but they are also forced to fight off mysterious creatures that hunt them down one by one.

The movie will hit VOD and iTunes on June 3, 2014.

Furlong is best known for Terminator 2: Judgment Day, American History X and Detroit Rock City.
