It’s official… Augie Garrido is the ultimate winner in college baseball…

The 75-year-old Latino head coach at the University of Texas at Austin became the winningest coach in college baseball history on Tuesday night when his No. 16-ranked Longhorns team defeated Texas State University 5-1.

The UT win resulted in Garrido’s 1,894th career victory, supplanting longtime Division II and NAIA coach Gordon Gillespie.

Garrido, currently in his 45th season of collegiate coaching and his 39th in Division I, had previously become the winningest coach in Division I in 2003.

Garrido, who has coached the Longhorns since 1997, has led Texas to two national championships, in 2002 and 2005. He guided Cal State Fullerton to College World Series titles in 1979, 1984 and 1995.

Garrido has garnered National Coach of the Year honors five times during his illustrious career (1975, 1979, 1984, 1985, 2002), regional coach of the year accolades following six different seasons (1975, 1979, 1984, 1985, 2002, 2004) and conference coach of the year distinctions on three occasions (1987, 1995, 2002).
