Salma Hayek to Co-Chair Kering Foundation’s First-Ever ‘Caring for Women Dinner’

It’s a Caring moment for Salma Hayek Pinault.

The 55-year-old Mexican Oscar-nominated actress will co-chair the Kering Foundation’s first-ever Caring for Women Dinner, which aims to raise funds for organizations that work to support those affected by gender-based violence.

Salma HayekThe dinner will take place on September 15 in New York City and will be hosted by Anderson Cooper.

In addition to Hayek, the event will also be co-chaired by her husband François-Henri Pinault, Gisele Bündchen, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Samuel L. Jackson, Julie Mehretu and Gloria Steinem.

All proceeds from the event will benefit three Kering Foundation partner organizations: the National Network to End Domestic Violence (NNEDV), Ms. Foundation For Women and Global Fund For Women.

“Kering and its Houses stand in active opposition to all forms of violence against women and, now more than ever, the Kering Foundation is resolute in its mission to create a world where women can live freely in physical and psychological safety,” François-Henri Pinault, chairman and CEO of Kering as well as chairman of the Kering Foundation, said in a statement. “The Caring for Women Dinner represents a milestone in our 14-year history of partnering with front-line organizations that support women survivors to escape violence and rebuild their lives.”

The NNEDV is a leading voice for domestic violence victims and their advocates in the US, representing a network of 56 state and territorial coalitions that inform and support survivors of domestic violence. Funds raised at the dinner will support the WomensLaw Email Hotline and WomensLaw.org, two resources that help provide free legal information to survivors and inform millions of people on topics such as restraining orders, custody, divorce, immigration and gun laws.

The Ms. Foundation for Women invests in and strengthens the capacity of women-led grassroots organizations, advancing meaningful social, cultural and economic change for the lives of women. Funds raised will support the Girls of Color Initiative, which provides grantmaking, leadership development and capacity building to girls of color living under multiple systems of oppression and inequalities in the U.S.

Finally, the Global Fund for Women shifts resources and power toward women, girls, and all marginalized people worldwide.

The dinner from Kering will support the Global Fund for Women Crisis Fund, which works directly with local feminist groups to address immediate needs like food, shelter and security.

More information about the dinner — including co-hosts, expected attendees, performances and other details — will be announced in the coming weeks.

Apple TV+ has released the trailer for Dear…, the new RJ Cutler-produced 10-episode documentary series that will feature the 40-year-old Puerto Rican Broadway superstar amd the mastermnd behind the Tony Award-winning musicals In The Heights and Hamiltion in one espisode.

Dear…will premiere on the streaming service on Friday, June 5.

Inspired by Apple’s “Dear Apple” advertising spots, Dear… uses letters written by those whose lives have been changed through their work to tell biographical stories of its subjects, who range in Season 1 from Oprah Winfrey and Gloria Steinem to Spike Lee, Miranda, Yara Shahidi, Stevie Wonder, Aly Raisman, Misty Copeland, Big Bird and more.

Dear…takes an inventive and cinematic approach to biographies of the most iconic figures in society today by using letters written by those whose lives have been changed through their work. 

In addition to Miranda, widely known for creating and starring in the the Tony Award-winning Broadway musicals In the Heights and Hamilton, the 10-episode series will profile internationally recognized leaders including Oprah Winfrey, Gloria Steinem, Spike Lee, Yara Shahidi, Stevie Wonder, Aly Raisman, Misty Copeland, Big Bird and more.

The docuseries, inspired by Apple’s “Dear Apple” spots hails from Emmy and Peabody Award-winner RJ Cutler and Matador Content. The series will premiere globally this spring on Apple TV+.

The “Dear Apple” spots feature a mix of Apple Watch users who personally write a letter to thank the tech giant for the watch technology that has helped them live healthier lives. In one spot, a man notes how the watch’s SOS feature helped him call for help when he was injured in a car crash.

Monica Ramirez to Speak at This Year’s Makers Conference

Monica Ramirez is Maker-ing a difference…

The Latina activist will take part in this week’s Makers Conference, a three-day event that seeks to underscore the stories of trailblazing women.

Ramirez, the co-founder of Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, will be one of the speakers at the conference, which looks to amplify the conversion around sexual harassment and push for change on issues such as equal pay and diversity in the workplace.

Ramirez, the daughter and granddaughter of migrant farmworkers hailing from a rural community in Ohio, has served farmworker, Latina and immigrant women as an attorney, organizer and advocate. She’s dedicated to ending violence against women, particularly farmworkers.

She’s also the founder of several major initiatives and projects, including Esperanza: The Immigrant Women’s Legal Initiative of the Southern Poverty Law Center, The Bandana Project and the Latina Impact Fund, and she’s a Board member for the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health and the Deputy Director for the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement.

This year’s other speakers — chosen from the worlds of tech, entertainment, business and non-profits — include Hillary Clinton, Gloria Steinem, Jane Fonda, Lena Waithe, Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani, Cleo Wade, Jessica Biel and Lena Dunham.

The 2018 Makers Conference will take place from February 5-8.

Nuñez to Serve as a Presenter at the Television Academy’s Creative Arts Emmys

The Television Academy has announced the second wave of presenters for the Creative Arts Emmys on September 10 and 11, with the 57-year-old Cuban actor and comedian making the list.

The former The Office star is set to present on Sunday, along with Michelle Ang, Rob Corddry, Seth Green, Tim Gunn, Robert Herjavec, Julianne Hough, Carly Rae Jepsen, Katharine McPhee  and Gloria Steinem.

Saturday nightspresenters include Linda Ellerbee, Chris Hardwick, Ken Jeong, Margo Martindale, Laurie Metcalf and Martin Mull.

For the first time, the Creative Emmy Awards will be held over two consecutive nights at the Microsoft Theater.

FXX will air the 2016 Creative Arts Emmy Awards on September 17.

Molina Receives the Presidential Medal of Freedom

Mario Molina has earned a major presidential honor…

The 70-year-old Mexican chemist and environmental scientist has been named a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Molina, the first Mexican-born citizen to ever receive a Nobel Prize in chemistry, joins a list of 16 individuals that includes jazz musician Arturo Sandoval, media mogul Oprah Winfrey, veteran Washington Post journalist Ben Bradlee, former President Bill Clinton and country singer Loretta Lynn.

The award established 50 years ago by President John F. Kennedy is the country’s highest civilian honor given to Americans who’ve made contributions “to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”

Molina, one of the most prominent precursors to the discovery of the Antarctic ozone hole, has received several awards and honors throughout his career, sharing the 1995 Nobel Prize in chemistry with Paul J. Crutzen for their discovery of the role of chlorofluorocarbon gases (CFCs) in ozone depletion.

Molina had been assigned by President Barack Obama to form part of the transition team on environmental issues.

He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Science.

This year’s other honorees include: baseball player Ernie Banks, Senator Daniel Inouye (posthumous), Nobel Prize-winning scholar Daniel Kahneman, Senator Richard Lugar, astronaut Sally Ride (posthumous), civil rights activist Bayard Rustin (posthumous), ex-UNC basketball coach Dean Smith, Gloria Steinem, civil rights leader Cordy Tindell “C.T.” Vivian, and Judge Patricia Wald.

“The Presidential Medal of Freedom goes to men and women who have dedicated their own lives to enriching ours,” said President Obama. “This year’s honorees have been blessed with extraordinary talent, but what sets them apart is their gift for sharing that talent with the world. It will be my honor to present them with a token of our nation’s gratitude.”
