Ortiz Earns His Seventh No. 1 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Songs Chart with “Fuiste Mia”

It’s Lucky No. 7 for Gerardo Ortiz

The 26-year-old Mexican American singer-songwriter’s latest single “Fuiste Mia” jumps 5-1 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Songs airplay chart (dated September 10), earning him his seventh chart-topper.

Gerardo Ortiz

The crowning rise ties Ortiz with Mexican superstar Vicente Fernandez for most No. 1s on the airplay chart by a solo act. (The chart was launched in 1994.)

Among all artists, regional Mexican groups Conjunto Primavera and Intocable lead for most overall No. 1s on Regional Mexican Songs, with 16 each.

It’s the first time “Fuiste Mia” has topped any Billboard chart, and comes five months after the song’s controversial music video was released. The clip, issued in March, depicted images of murder and violence against women. At a press conference in April, Ortiz attempted to explain his artistic vision for the video saying, “It’s only a music video, pure fiction. People have to understand and learn how to distinguish fiction from reality.”

The clip was removed from the artist’s official YouTube and Vevo channels in April following an online petition demanding its take down. An arrest warrant was later issued by the Mexican government for “criminal exaltation.” On July 16, Ortiz was arrested at an airport in Mexico in connection with the video, and released the following day after posting bail.

“Fuiste Mia” vaults to No. 1 with a 42 percent gain in airplay audience at the format in the week ending August 28, according to Nielsen Music, rising to 10.63 million. A healthy chunk of that rise is owed to increased play at KLAX in Los Angeles, which doubled its plays of the song from 30 spins to 60 in the latest tracking week (growing it by 116 percent in audience, to 990,000). Among all regional Mexican radio stations that report to the chart, “Fuiste Mia’s” largest supporter, in terms of audience, is KLTN, with 1.1 million for the week.

Ortiz accumulated his first seven No. 1s in just four years, four months and 20 days (trumping the 11 years it took Fernandez to notch his seven leaders). Only two other acts claimed their first seven No. 1s as fast as Ortiz: Conjunto Primavera took two years, eight months and 22 days between their first seven No. 1s, while Los Tigres del Norte marks the shortest duration between that many chart-toppers, one year, eight months and 22 days.

The airplay increase for “Fuiste Mia” helps the track to soar 16-5 on the Latin Airplay chart, where it takes Greatest Gainer honors and reaches a new peak in its 13th charting frame. It marks the seventh top five for Ortiz on the all-Latin genre radio chart.

Over on the Hot Latin Songs chart, which blends airplay, sales, and streaming, the track matches its previous peak, hopping 15-11 (it first peaked at No. 11 on the Aug. 6-dated chart).

On August 14, Ortiz announced that his forthcoming album will be called Comeré Callado. The release date has not yet been revealed.

Fifth Harmony Named to This Year’s Billboard 21 Under 21 List

Ally Brooke Hernandez, Camila Cabello and Lauren Jauregui are hot young stars

The Latina singers and their fellow Fifth Harmony members have earned a spot on Billboard’s 21 Under 21 list, the annual ranking of music’s most powerful minors.

Fifth Harmony

Fifth Harmony, the all-girl group created by Simon Cowell on the second season of The X Factor, has moved up from No. 21 last year to No. 5 on the 2014 list.

Since their formation, Hernandez, Cabello, Jauregui and the gang have earned love from a million Harmonizers, one of the most passionate online fanbases today, helping the ladies of Fifth Harmony continue to thrive a few years removed from their X Factor introduction.

Following their debut EP release last October, Fifth Harmony has spent much of 2014 on the road supporting artists like Demi Lovato and Austin Mahone on tour, winning over new fans while preparing for the release of their debut full-length album, Reflection.

The first single, “Bo$$,” flaunted a rhythmic new sound and became 5H’s biggest Billboard Hot 100 hit to date, ahead of Reflection’s November release.

Recently, Fifth Harmony has added some impressive honors to their list of accomplishments, earning the MTV Artist to Watch award at the MTV Video Music Awards, as well as the Favorite Band on Social Media award at the Shorties.

They recently released the second single from Reflection,Them Girls Be Like.”

But Fifth Harmony’s Latina singers aren’t the only Hispanic artists on the list…

Becky G makes her first-ever appearance on Billboard’s 21 Under 21 list.

The 17-year-old Mexican American singer, rapper, actress and CoverGirl model comes in at No. 9 on the list.

The L.A.-born Gomez has continued to build momentum since her Dr. Luke-produced debut single “Shower” reached No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 2014. “Can’t Get Enough,” featuring Pitbull, spent a week at No. 1 on the Latin Rhythm Airplay chart in June and recent TV performances on the Today show and the 2014 Teen Choice Awards, among others, have brought even more attention to the Latina teen queen. Her strong social media following (she’s quickly approaching 5 million Facebook likes) has continued to rise as she tours with Katy Perry, Demi Lovato and Jason Derulo. With her debut full-length album set for release later this year, Becky G is on her way to becoming a bona fide power brand.

Meanwhile, the first Latino on this year’s list is Luis Coronel.

The 18-year-old regional Mexican singer, who comes in at No. 11, hadn’t even finished high school before he was trending on social media and showing up on the Billboard charts in 2013. One year later, he has a major teen following in the U.S. and beyond, as well as a thriving career under his belt.

The Del Records artist spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Regional Mexican Albums chart with Con La Frente En Alto in October 2013 and his single “Tenerte” spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Regional Mexican Airplay charts earlier this year.

He’s also had two top 10 hits on the Hot Latin Songs chart, has won trophies for new artist of the year at the 2014 Billboard Latin Music Awards and social media sensation on Telemundo‘s Premios Tu Mundo awards show, has served as a judge on the Mexican singing competition show La Academia Kids and has toured with major recording acts Julion Alvarez to Gerardo Ortiz. Next up for Coronel: a new album, Quiero Ser Tu Dueno, due on September 30.

Last, but certainly not least, Scotty McCreery comes in at No. 16 on this year’s list, down eight spots from his No. 8 position last year.

The 20-year-old part-Puerto Rican country singer has come a long way since winning season 10 of American Idol. The past year has seen the North Carolina native continue to grow his career. “See You Tonight” became his first top 10 hit on the Billboard charts, and became his third gold single. His sophomore album of the same name topped the Country Albums chart upon its release in October 2013, and also became his third straight song to hit the top 10 on the Billboard 200.

McCreery is also proving himself as a live commodity — his See You Tonight tour put him in front of thousands of fans each night, and continues to roll across the country through December. As he approaches 21 in just a few weeks, this will be Scotty’s last appearance on our 21 Under 21.

Ortiz’s “Quien Se Anima” Becomes His Latest No. 1 Single

Gerardo Ortiz is back atop the Billboard charts…

The 24-year-old Mexican American singer’s latest single climbs 6-1 on Billboard‘s Regional Mexican Songs chart, earning him his fourth No. 1 on the list.

Gerardo Ortiz

Quien Se Anima” grows by 13 percent in its fifth week on the chart, to 7.5 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS. The track also becomes his fifth to reach the top 10 on Hot Latin Songs chart, rising 11-9.

The track is the second single from Ortiz’s fourth studio album Archivos de Mi Vida, which debuted at No. 1 on Top Latin Albums chart in December.

Anthony Wins All Three Latin Prizes at the Billboard Music Awards

It’s a clean sweep for Marc Anthony

The 45-year-old Puerto Rican salsa and pop singer swept the Latin music categories at this year’s 2014 Billboard Music Awards.

Marc Anthony

It’s a high point for Anthony, in a year that has seen him receive awards and accolades for his salsa comeback album 3.0, and the smash hit single “Vivir Mi Vida.” The track spent 17 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot Latin Songs chart — a record for 2014.

Anthony received the BBMAs’ Top Latin Artist award, beating out Romeo Santos, Mexican Regional singer/songwriter Gerardo Ortiz, Prince Royce, and the late Jenni Rivera.

Meanwhile, “3.0” and “Vivir Mi Vida” won the best Latin Album and Best Latin Song awards, respectively. Anthony did not appear on the BBMAs televised broadcast.

Anthony’s first studio salsa album in a decade has helped revive interest in salsa throughout the world.

“It [proved] people want good music,” Anthony said during a Q&A at the Billboard Latin Music Conference last month. “It’s a blessing; it’s like given me new life. It’s introduced my music to a lot of people.”

Mars Named a Finalist in Three Billboard Music Award Categories, Including Top Artist

He’s Billboard’s reigning Artist of the Year… And now Bruno Mars leads the Latino pack of finalists for the 2014 Billboard Music Awards.

Bruno Mars

Mars is up against Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake and Imagine Dragons for the top award.

The awards will be broadcast live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday, May 18, on ABC from 8:00 –11:00 pm ET.

Billboard Music Awards finalists are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital singles sales, radio airplay, touring, streaming and social interactions on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, VEVO, Spotify and other popular online destinations for music. These measurements are tracked year-round by Billboard and its data partners, including Nielsen Entertainment and Next Big Sound. The awards are based on the reporting period of March 11, 2013 through March 9, 2014.

The six finalists will be narrowed down to three finalists, who will be announced on Billboard’s website on April 21. Voting will then continue through the first two hours of the live 2014 Billboard Music Awards broadcast, culminating with the announcement of the award winner during the last hour of the show.
