Pedro Pascal is Freaky-ing out…
The first official trailer has been released for the heist film Freaky Tales, starring the 49-year-old Chilean actor.
Set in 1987 Oakland, starring Pascal and narrated by the Bay Area legend himself, Freaky Tales tells the story of a career thief doing one last job before he calls it quits. Of course, we all know how that story goes because once you think you’re out, they pull you back in.
However, this isn’t your typical heist film. The job ends up tougher than it sounds. Thinking they’re robbing a harmless pro basketball player in Golden State Warriors point guard Sleepy Floyd of his ancient Asian artifact collection, he turns out to be an experienced swordsman and kung-fu master and chaos ensues.
The film lends its name from a Too $hort track that appeared on his fourth album, 1987’s Born to Mack. Clocking in around 9 minutes and 30 seconds, “Freaky Tales” features $hort Dogg bragging to listeners about his sexual conquests and was already considered a regional classic by the time the Oakland legend crossed over into the mainstream with Life Is…Too $hort in 1988. It was also one of the earliest instances of intricate storytelling in rap history.
Written and directed by Ryan Fleck & Anna Boden, the movie also stars Tom Hanks, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis as Sleepy Floyd, Normani, Symba, Marshawn Lynch, and the late Angus Cloud.
Freaky Tales premiered at Sundance earlier this year in January and hits theaters this spring on April 4, 2025.
