Romeo Santos Earns Sixth No. 1 on Billboard’s Tropical Albums Chart with “Formula, Vol. 3”

Romeo Santos has another chart-topping album on his resume…

The 41-year-old Puerto Rican and Dominican American singer-songwriter, known as The King of Bachata, is back at No. 1 on Billboard’s Tropical Albums chart as his latest LP, Fórmula, Vol. 3, tops the September 17-dated ranking — rising from its No. 8 debut a week earlier from less than one day of activity.

It’s his sixth straight No. 1 on the chart.

The album was released September 1 at 11:00 pm ET via Sony Music Latin, — one hour before most albums are typically released. (The September 17-dated chart reflects activity for the album in the September 2-8 tracking period, while the September 10 chart covered the August 25-September 1 frame.)

Fórmula, Vol. 3 rallies 8-1 in its second chart week with 26,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending September 8, according to Luminate.

The majority of the set’s sum derives from streaming-equivalent album units (23,000), equating 33.1 million official on-demand streams of the album’s songs. Three-thousand of the remaining total belongs to traditional album sales (2,000) and track-equivalent album units (1,000).

On the multimetric Tropical Albums chart as measured in equivalent album units, each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album.

Fórmula, Vol. 3 completes the Fórmula trilogy and lands slightly a decade after its maiden effort, Fórmula, Vol. 1, rose to No. 1 in its second week, where it held for 33 weeks (starting Nov. 26, 2011). Meanwhile, follow-up full-length Vol. 2 lifted 7-1 also in its second week to crown Tropical Albums for 116 weeks, the second-most (trailing Santos’ own Todavía Me Amas: Los Mejor de Aventura; 170 at No. 1) since the chart’s inception in 1985.

Further, Santos replaces himself at No. 1, sending Vol. 2 to No. 3, while Todavía Me Amas holds in the runner-up slot. Plus, the complete Fórmula series holds a spot in the chart’s top five, with Vol. 1 jumping 5-4 on the current chart.

Vol. 3 gives Santos his sixth straight No. 1 on Tropical Albums. He ties with India and Prince Royce for the fourth-most among tropical soloists.

Elsewhere, Fórmula, Vol. 3 debuts at No. 2 on the overall Top Latin Albums ranking, his sixth consecutive top 10 there. It’s his first chart appearance since Utopía launched at No. 1 in 2019.

It also opens at No. 10 on the overall Billboard 200, his fourth top 10 there and first top-tier visit since 2017 (Golden, No. 10 debut and peak).

Romeo Santos has proven to have the winning Formula…

The 39-year-old Puerto Rican and Dominican American singer, known as “the King of Bachata,” will be honored with the Billboard Top Latin Album of the Decade Award at the 2020 Billboard Latin Music Awards, taking place on October 21.

Announced by Telemundo and Billboard, Santos will be honored with the award thanks to his chart-topping album Formula: Vol. 2.

Santos — who is up for six awards this year, including artist of the year and streaming song of the year — achieved the No. 1 spot on Billboard‘s Top Latin Albums Decade-End chart with his album Formula: Vol. 2, which also scored Santos his third No. 1 on the Top Latin Albums chart, ruling for 11 weeks starting March 15, 2014.

Additionally, Formula: Vol. 2 achieved the record for the album with the most weeks on the Top Latin Albums chart with a total of 288 weeks and counting. It also holds the record for the album with the most weeks in the top 10, with a total of 168. On the Billboard 200 chart, the album earned Santos his highest debut at No. 5.

The Billboard Latin Music Awards will kick off at 7:00 pm ET with a red carpet preshow followed by the three-hour awards show, featuring live performances by today’s top Latin artists to honor the most popular albums, songs and performers in Latin music.

Ozuna’s “Odiesa” Registers Largest Streaming Week Ever for a Latin Release

There’s absolutely no sophomore slump for Ozuna…

The 26-year-old Puerto Rican reggaeton and Latin trap singer’s second studio album, Aura, has scored 2018’s biggest week for a Latin album, and the largest streaming week ever for a Latin release.

Ozuna’s album, released on August 24 via VP Entertainment/DimeloVi/Sony Music Latin, earned 49,000 equivalent album units in the week ending August 30, according to Nielsen Music— largely driven by streaming activity. Of that sum, 7,000 were in traditional album sales. Aura arrives with 55.34 million on-demand audio streams earned for its songs in its debut tracking frame.

Aura arrives at No. 7 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart and makes for Ozuna’s first top 10. It also gives Ozuna his second No. 1 on the Top Latin Albums chart, where it bumps his first album (and first chart-topper), Odisea, from No. 1 to No. 2.

Odisea falls to No. 2 in its 53rd week on the list. It has been No. 1 on the list for 46 nonconsecutive weeks, the second-most weeks atop the chart in its 25-year history. (Only Gloria Estefan’s Mi Tierra has more, with 58 weeks leading the list.)

Additionally, Ozuna is the first act to replace itself at No. 1 since March 16, 2013, when Jenni Rivera, who died the previous December, took over for herself at No. 1. Her Joyas Prestadas: Pop replaced her own La Misma Gran Senora at No. 1.

Ozuna is also the first act to concurrently rank at Nos. 1 and 2 on the chart in a year-and-a-half. It last occurred when Juan Gabriel was Nos. 1, 2 and 3 on the January 28, 2017-dated chart with Los Duo 2, Mis Rancheras Queridas and Hoy Manana y Siempre, respectively. Gabriel died the previous August.

Aura is the highest-charting Latin album on the all-genre Billboard 200 since Romeo Santos’ Formula: Vol. 2 debuted and peaked at No. 5 on the March 15, 2014-dated list (from 85,000 copies sold, back before the list transitioned to an equivalent album units-ranked tally).

The Billboard 200 ranks the week’s most popular albums in the U.S. across all genres of music, while the Top Latin Albums chart ranks the week’s biggest albums within the Latin genre. Both charts rank titles based on multi-metric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units are comprised of traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Santos to Participate in Exclusive Q&A at This Year’s Billboard Latin Music Conference

Romeo Santos is ready to open up about his career successes…

The 33-year-old Puerto Rican/Dominican American singer-songwriter, who ended 2014 as Billboard‘s Latin Artist of the Year thanks to sustained sales, airplay and a strong social presence, will take part in an exclusive question-and-answer session at the 26^th annual Billboard Latin Music Conference taking place April 27-29 at the Ritz-Carlton Miami Beach.

Santos will sit with Billboard’s Leila Cobo on a session April 28 to discuss the success of his album Formula, Vol. 2, his appearance in the films Furious 7 and Angry Birds, his social strategy, his two sold-out Yankee Stadium shows, his appeal as a bilingual Latino and his upcoming tour, among other subjects.

Santos has redefined the term crossover with his groundbreaking collaborations with the likes of Nicki Minaj and Drake, while performing his contemporary take on bachata, the traditional music of the Dominican Republic.

With more No. 1 chart hits than any other Latin music artist this decade, according to Billboard, Santos closed out 2014 with his 10^th No. 1 single as a soloist; this in addition to previous hits as the lead singer of Aventura.

“This has been the year of Romeo Santos,” said Cobo. “He’s an extraordinary songwriter, performer and artist who has carved out his place as one of the most distinctive acts of his generation.”

The Billboard Latin Music Conference is the longest-running event dedicated to Latin music. The Conference culminates with the Billboard Latin Music Awards, a three-hour multi-million dollar production that will broadcast live on Telemundo on Thursday, April 30 at 8:00 pm ET.

Santos joins a growing roster of stellar speakers and artists that also includes J Balvin, Justin Quiles, Plan B, Luis Coronel and Farruko.

Santos Adds Second Concert Date at New York’s Yankee Stadium

Romeo Santos is preparing for a double-header at Yankee Stadium…

The 32-year-old Dominican American singer, one of Latin music’s fastest rising superstars, has announced an additional Yankee Stadium concert date for July 11, after selling out his original July 12th date in 48 hours, according to his reps.

No Latin artist has headlined the stadium since Tropical ensemble Fania All Stars performed and recorded Live At Yankee Stadium in 1973.

Santos will be the first Latino to do so in over 40 years and the first to ever top the bill at the Yankees’ new field, following its relocation in 2009.

The additional Bronx date follows a string of recently revealed US shows for his Formula Vol. 2 Tour.

Santos’ latest album Formula, Vol. 2 debuted at No. 1 on the Top Latin Albums chart on March 15, and at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart. It scored the best sales week of any Latin title in eight years, moving 85,000 copies in its opening week according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Santos’ single “Odio” featuring Drake is in its eighth consecutive week at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart.

Tickets for the July 11th Yankee Stadium show will go on sale to the public on Thursday, April 3.

Santos Announces 15-City “Formula Vol. 2” Arena Tour in the U.S.

It’s an extra special quinceañera for Romeo Santos…

The 32-year-old Puerto Rican/Dominican American singer has announced that the first leg of his Formula Vol. 2 Tour will include 15 U.S. arena dates.

The former member of Aventura will open his highly anticipated tour in Los Angeles on May 22.

The 15-date tour includes his previously confirmed Yankee Stadium show on July 12.

He’ll be the first Latin artist to headline the stadium in more than 40 years, since Fania All Stars momentous 1973 concert.

Santos sold out three shows at Madison Square Garden during his Formula Vol. 1 Tour in the summer of 2012, selling more tickets than any other artist at the venue that year. The shows were recorded for a CD/DVD, The King Stays King: Sold Out At Madison Square Garden, which spent two weeks atop the Top Latin Albums chart in November 2012.

Venues and on-sale dates for Santos’ shows haven’t been revealed yet.

Santos to Debut in the Top Five on the Billboard 200 Chart

It could turn out to be a memorable week for Romeo Santos…

The 32-year-old Puerto Rican/Dominican American singer is predicted to sell more than 90,000 copies of his latest album Formula, Vol. 2 in its debut week.

If sales figures hold up, Santos’ sophomore solo album would land in the Top Five on the Billboard 200 and give him his best sales week ever on the chart.

It would also result in the largest sales week for a Latin album since 2006.

The last Latin set to have a bigger week was RBD‘s Celestial, which sold 117,000 in its first week (ending Nov. 26, 2006). The last male solo artist to sell more than 90,000 was Daddy Yankee, when his Barrio Fino: En Directo — which would secure his best bow with 100,000 in the week ending Dec. 18, 2005.

But Santos isn’t the only Latino artist who could reach the Top Five.

Kid Cudi‘s Satellite Flight is expected to sell 90,000 as well. The set debuted in the iTunes Store on Tuesday (Feb. 25) with little advance warning. It is presently only available through iTunes — and only as a full album. He follows in the footsteps of Beyonce, who released her surprise self-titled album in December as an album-only set through iTunes. (After a week, the set’s tracks became available for individual purchase.)

The Billboard 200’s new top 10 will be revealed on Wednesday, March 5.
