Garcia Bernal & Luna to Co-Produce Fantastic Fest’s Fantastic Market with Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey Network

Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna are preparing for a fantastic September.

The actors’ production company with Pablo Cruz will be co-producing the Fantastic Fest’s second edition of its international co-production market: Fantastic Market | Mercado Fantastico.

Garcia Bernal, Luna and their company will co-produce the market alongside Robert Rodriguez’s El Rey Network.

The international co-production market focuses on genre films and highlights new narrative projects from across the globe, with a particular emphasis on filmmakers from Latin America, Spain, Portugal and Latino filmmakers in the U.S. The goal is to connect international film projects with potential production partners, sales agents and distributors.

In all, Fantastic Fest has selected 15 projects for this second edition.

Among the projects selected this year are Ventana director Rodrigo Susarte’s Invunche and Fright Night 2 helmer Eduardo Rodriguez’s The Darkness of the Road.

Trailer Released for Mira’s Elijah Wood-Starrer “Grand Piano”

Eugenio Mira’s English-language debut is nothing short of grand

A new trailer has been released for the 36-year-old Spanish filmmaker’s Grand Piano, a thriller starring Elijah Wood as a concert pianist coerced into giving the performance of his life by an unseen sniper.

The film, which was written by Damien Chazelle (The Last Exorcism Part II, Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench), also stars John Cusack and Kerry Bishé.

Mira is an accomplished composer himself, having scored his own films Agnosia and The Birthday as well as 2007′s Timecrimes from fellow Spaniard Nacho Vigalondo.

Magnet Releasing acquired the rights to Grand Piano in September when it premiered at Austin’s Fantastic Fest.

The film will be released in theaters on March 7 release following its video on demand (VOD) debut in late January.

Rodriguez’s “El Mariachi” to Be Made Into a Spanish-Language Series

Robert Rodriguez’s debut film is getting a brand new life…

Sony Pictures Television has announced plans to produce 70 episodes of El Mariachi, an original series based on the 45-year-old Mexican American director’s 1992 cult film of the same name.

In 2011, El Mariachi was selected as an addition to the National Film Registry of films for preservation by the Library of Congress for it’s “enduring significance to American Culture.”

The Spanish-language drama marks the first time Sony and its Colombian partner Teleset will produce a series entirely in Mexico.

Soy tu Fan star Ivan Arana takes on the role of the lovestruck, revenge-seeking mariachi who wages war against fearsome drug cartels.

El Mariachi also features Mexican actors Martha Higareda and Julio Bracho.

“Staying true to the story, we are producing the series in Mexico, shooting in magnificent locations and utilizing some of the country’s best talent,” said Angelica Guerra, Sony senior vice president of production in Latin America and the U.S. Hispanic market.

The series will air on Sony Entertainment Television in Latin America and on a yet-to-be-announced U.S. network.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez’s latest film, Machete Kills, will have its world premiere on September 19 at the Fantastic Fest in Austin.

The 45-year-old Mexican American filmmaker’s sequel to the cult classic Machete, starring Danny Trejo, will debut in his hometown of Austin, Texas at the annual genre-packed Fantastic Fest.

In the film, Trejo returns as the title character – an ex-Federale turned vigilante – who is recruited by the President (Charlie Sheen – billed as Carlos Estevez) to stop an eccentric billionaire (Mel Gibson) from launching a missile into space.

Rodriguez has again assembled a B-movie dream team of name actors and unorthodox stars for his gory action-packed film, including Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Demian Bichir, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens, Cuba Gooding, Jr., William Sadler and Marko Zaror.

Machete Kills will have its world premiere September 19 at the new Lakeline location of the Alamo Drafthouse theaters, home to the annual horror, action, sci-fi, fantasy, and foreign film festival.

Two weeks later Open Road Films will release Machete Kills nationwide on October 4.

This year’s Fantastic Fest runs from September 19-26, 2013.

Urbizu’s “No Rest for the Wicked” to be Released in the U.S.

Tribeca Film has acquired North American rights to the 50-year-old Spanish filmmaker’s award-winning thriller No Rest for the Wicked (No habra paz para los malvados), his first outing behind the camera after an eight-year absence.

Urbizu’s film, which is screening as part of Fantastic Fest in Austin this weekend, was the big winner at this year’s Goya Awards —the Spanish equivalent of the Oscars—capturing six trophies, including Best Film.

No Rest for the Wicked Poster

No Rest for the Wicked centers on a police inspector, Santos Trinidad, who gets involved in a triple murder.  But there’s a witness that manages to escape and could incriminate him. So antos begins an investigation to find and eliminate him. Meanwhile, Judge Chacon, who is investigating the triple murder, goes on looking for the murderer but what seems a simple case of drugs actually is something far more dangerous.

Tribeca Film plans a December release for the film. The release will span multiple platforms, including availability on demand in more than 40 million homes through a variety of video-on-demand offerings, as well as iTunes, Amazon Watch Instantly, VUDU and Xbox.
