Nadal Wins Hamburg Open, Closes in on Guillermo Vilas’ Clay Court Title Record

Rafael Nadal is thisclose to cementing his status as the “King of Clay.”

The 29-year-old Spanish tennis star managed to overcome some sloppy play on his favorite surface to beat Fabio Fognini 7-5, 7-5 and win the Hamburg Open for the second time on Sunday.

Rafael Nadal

Nadal squandered a 3-1 lead in the final set and saved two set points before prevailing in 2 hours and 34 minutes over the eighth-seeded Italian and the 2013 Hamburg winner.

“It was a great match, many great points, many breaks, we fought hard,” Nadal said. “I had many ups and downs.”

The former World No. 1 extended his run of having won at least one European clay-court title every year since 2004 when he took his maiden crown in Sopot, Poland.

“It’s an important title for me,” Nadal said.

Nadal now has 47 clay-court titles, second only to Guillermo Vilas‘ 49. It was Nadal’s second title on clay this year after Buenos Aires in February. He has 67 career titles overall. Nadal won in Hamburg in 2008.

With his third title of the year, Nadal will rise one spot to No. 9 in the rankings.

Fognini was trying to become the first player to beat Nadal three times on clay in a year. With six losses this year, Nadal has as many defeats on clay as in three previous years combined.

The two players traded breaks in the first four games and Nadal saved one break point to hold for 6-5. Fognini then saved three break points before Nadal clinched the set with a forehand return.

Nadal served for a 4-1 lead in the second, but Fognini turned the match before wasting two set points in the 10th game.

Nadal again had to save two break points before going 6-5 up. Two successive forehand errors by Fognini gave Nadal the match in the next game.

Nadal Defeats Andreas Seppi to Reach Hamburg Open Final

Rafael Nadal is back in an ATP men’s final…

The 29-year-old Spanish tennis star beat Andreas Seppi 6-1, 6-2 to set up a Hamburg Open final against Fabio Fognini.

Rafael Nadal

Nadal served a double-fault at match point in the seventh game before breaking serve in the next to win.

Nadal, the tournament’s top seed, is looking to extend his streak of having won at least one European clay-court title every year since 2004.

The former World No. 1 has dropped to 10th in the rankings and is playing his first tournament since losing in the second round of Wimbledon.

He won in Hamburg in 2008, the last time he played in the clay-court event.

The fourth-seeded Fognini beat qualifier Lucas Pouille 6-2, 7-6 (3) after saving a set point in the second set.

Nadal holds a 4-2 career edge over Fognini, the 2013 Hamburg champion.

Ferrer Beats Fabio Fognini to Claim the Rio Open Title

It could turn out to be a memorable year for David Ferrer

The 32-year-old Spanish tennis player won his second tournament of the season, downing Italy’s Fabio Fognini on Sunday 6-2, 6-3 in the final of the Rio Open.

David Ferrer

It’s the 23rd ATP singles title of his career for Ferrer, who has won all eight matches he has played against Fognini, including the previous one — the final on clay last year in Buenos Aires.

Ferrer was seeded No. 2 in the clay-court tournament behind countryman Rafael Nadal.

“It was my best match of the tournament and I’m very happy having won two tournaments this season,” said the 32-year-old Ferrer, who is off to the best start of his career.

Ferrer also won the Qatar Open in Doha.

Nadal lost to No. 6 Fognini in Saturday’s semifinal 1-6, 6-2, 7-5. The loss ended Nadal’s 52-match winning string in semifinals on clay. Nadal, the winner of 14 Grand Slams, has yet to reach the final in three tournaments this season.

Fognini was looking for his fourth ATP singles title.

Cuevas Beats Tommy Robredo to Win the Croatia Open and Claim His Second ATP Title

It’s turning out to be a memorable month for Pablo Cuevas

The 28-year-old Uruguayan tennis player beat defending champion Tommy Robredo of Spain 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday to win the Croatia Open final and claim his second ATP title in July.

Pablo Cuevas

Cuevas’ victory comes hours after he ousted top-seeded Fabio Fognini in the semifinals after heavy rain on Saturday caused the delay of their their match.

The second-seeded Robredo had two break points at 1-1 in the first set, but it was Cuevas who first broke in the sixth game for a 4-2 lead.

Cuevas went ahead 2-0 in the second set and broke the 32-year-old Robredo’s serve once more in the fifth game. Robredo had a break point to level to 4-4.

Robredo hit 36 winners compared to Cuevas’ 26, but had 36 unforced errors against 19 for Cuevas.

Cuevas won his maiden ATP title earlier this month at the Swedish Open in Bastad. He’s the second qualifier to win an ATP World Tour tournament this year after Slovakia’s Martin Klizan at Munich in May.

“I was happy to win the first title, now two in a row make me even happier,” Cuevas said. “And this one was tougher to win, because I had to play in qualifying as well. I was very focused during the week, now I am really tired.”

In his past two attempts in Umag, Cuevas had never gone beyond the second round.

“Pablo played a great match, he made no mistake,” Robredo said. “There were some balls that might have changed the match, but it did not go my way. He was better than me in the first set from the baseline, so I had to change tactics, to be more aggressive.”

Robredo reached the final by defeating third-seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia 7-6 (10), 6-3 earlier Sunday, while Cuevas upset Fognini 6-3, 6-4.

Robredo Defeats Pablo Carreno Busta to Reach Croatia Open Semifinals

Tommy Robredo is two matches away from defending his title at the Croatia Open

The 32-year-old Spanish tennis player, who defeated Fabio Fognini in the finals last year, advanced to the semifinals after beating fellow Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta 6-1, 6-4.

Tommy Robredo

The 18th-ranked Robredo next faces third-seeded Marin Cilic, who eased past Czech Lukas Rosol 6-0, 6-2.

Robredo won the first set in only 23 minutes. Carreno Busta was twice a break up in the second set before Robredo responded to win the last three games of the match.

Meanwhile, Fognini, the tournament’s top seed this year, rallied to defeat Borna Coric of Croatia 5-7, 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the quarterfinals.

Also, Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay beat Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to become the first qualifier in the event’s semifinals since Viktor Troicki in 2007.

Cuevas hit 12 aces for his sixth straight win in Umag, including three qualifying rounds.

He’ll next play Fognini, who was one set and a break down before he managed to turn the match around.

Bautista Agut Defeats Lukas Rosol at the Mercedes Cup to Claim Second ATP Title

And then there were two for Roberto Bautista Agut

Less than one month after winning his first ATP title, the 26-year-old Spanish tennis player defeated Lukas Rosol 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in the Mercedes Cup final on Sunday for his second career crown.

Roberto Bautista Agut

The third-seeded Bautista Agut saved five of the six break points he faced and converted three of his six chances to win the heated match in 1 hour, 42 minutes.

Rosol, ranked No. 48 in the world, fired 13 aces to Bautista Agut’s two, but the Czech player was unable to prevent the 23rd-ranked Spaniard from claiming his second title.

“Since the start of the season, I believed a lot in myself and my work,” Bautista Agut told the ATP website. “I’ve been playing really well, won a lot of matches and it was only a question of time before this happened.”

Bautista Agut, who defeated defending champion and top-seeded Fabio Fognini on Saturday, claimed his maiden victory at the Topshelf Open last month.

Rosol, who knocked out second-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia in his semifinal, was also bidding for his second title after winning at Bucharest last year.

“I was looking to find a good rhythm, but the serve was not working at all,” Rosol said. “I had to risk a lot with my shots. The level was not as good as the previous rounds and it’s a pity because I felt really good this week.”

Delbonis Defeats Paolo Lorenzi at the Brazil Open to Claim His First ATP Title

The second time’s the charm for Federico Delbonis

Playing in only his second ATP final, the 23-year-old Argentine tennis player defeated Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the Brazil Open final on Sunday to earn his first ATP title.

Federico Delbonis

Delbonis broke Lorenzi’s serve to start the decisive set and held on to close the match in 2 hours, 6 minutes after converting on his second match point.

He jumped and punched the air after sending a winner down the line past Lorenzi’s outstretched arms.

Delbonis celebrated a nearly perfect week in which he also reached the semifinals in the doubles tournament.

“To tell you the truth, I have no words,” Delbonis said. “I played well match after match. It was a great result in the end.”

In his first ATP final, Delbonis lost to Italy’s Fabio Fognini last July after upsetting Roger Federer in the semifinals in Hamburg.

With the victory at the ATP 250 tournament in Sao Paulo, Delbonis will move to 45th in the ATP rankings, a career best.

Lorenzi won the first set on Sunday after breaking Delbonis’ serve at 3-3, but the hard-hitting Argentine started serving well and was never broken again, finishing with 12 aces and no double faults.

Delbonis beat home-crowd favorite Thomaz Bellucci in the semifinals. He had defeated second-seeded Nicolas Almagro in the second round, a three-time winner at the Brazil Open.

It was the first time since 2007 that the Brazil Open wasn’t won by a Spanish player. Argentine Guillermo Canas lifted the trophy that year, and after that the tournament was won by Spaniards Almagro, Tommy Robredo, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Rafael Nadal.

Nadal decided not to defend the clay-court title this week. He chose to play in the first Rio Open, which he won last week.

Ferrer Wins Third Consecutive Title at Argentina’s Copa Claro

It’s the power of three for David Ferrer

The 31-year-old Spanish tennis player, who defeated his compatriot Nicolas Almagro in the previous round, has claimed his third straight title at Argentina’s Copa Claro tournament.

David Ferrer

Ferrer defeated Italy’s Fabio Fognini 6-4, 6-3 Sunday on the outdoor clay courts in the Argentine capital.

It was the 21st ATP singles title for the tournament’s top-seed Ferrer.

Second-seeded Fognini was playing his fifth consecutive clay-court final since the French Open.

The Italian won the final a week ago in Chile for his third tour singles title.

Ferrer, currently ranked No. 4 in the world, had previously won three consecutive titles at one other tournament, New Zealand’s Heineken Open in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

Ferrer Defeats Nicolas Almagro to Reach Copa Claro Final

David Ferrer is thisclose to a three-peat…

The 31-year-old Spanish tennis player defeated compatriot Nicolas Almagro 6-4-62 in Saturday’s semifinals at Argentina’s Copa Claro to reach the finals.

David Ferrer

Ferrer, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, improved his FedEx ATP Head2Head advantage over Almagro to 15-0 with the win.

The two-time defending champion prevailed in 86 minutes, saving six of seven break points faced while converting on four of his own. Almagro secured his lone break of serve to open the second set but was unable to maintain the early lead.

Ferrer, ranked No. 5 in the world, will look to overturn a seven-match losing streak in ATP World Tour finals when he faces Italy’s Fabiio Fognini in the finals, with his most recent title coming in Buenos Aires last year.

He’s also seeking to extend the string of Spanish dominance in the Argentine capital, with four different Spaniards having hoisted the trophy since 2009.

A win in the final would give Ferrer his third three-peat on the ATP World Tour, after winning three consecutive titles in Acapulco (2010-12) and Auckland (2011-13).

Meanwhile, Fognini rallied from down a set and a break to defeat third-seed Tommy Robredo 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 on Saturday, booking a spot in the Copa Claro final.

Ferrer Advances to Semi-Finals at Argentina’s Copa Claro

David Ferrer is one step closer to reaching 21…

21 ATP tournament titles, that is.

David Ferrer

The 31-year-old Spanish tenista beat his compatriot Albert Ramos 6-1, 6-2 on Friday to reach the semifinals of the Copa Claro tournament in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Ferrer, the two-time defending champion in Buenos Aires and this year’s No. 1 seed, is hoping to win his 21st ATP tournament.

Second-seeded Fabio Fognini of Italy and No. 3 Tommy Robredo of Spain are also into the semifinals, and they’ll face each other on Saturday.

Fognini, who won the ATP event last week in Chile, advanced Friday by defeating Pablo Andujar of Spain 6-4, 6-3.

Robredo won his match against Robin Haase of the Netherlands. Robredo won the first set 6-1, and Haase retired with an injury after falling behind 2-0 in the second set.

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal pulled out of the tournament with a back injury but will play next week in the Rio Open in Rio de Janeiro.
