Ozuna Named Contemporary Latin Songwriter of the Year at BMI Latin Awards with a Record Nine 2018 Hits

Ozunais on Cloud Nine…

The 27-year-old Puerto Rican reggaeton and Latin trap singer/songwriter was named the Contemporary Latin Songwriter of the Year at the 26th annual BMI Latin Awards.

Ozuna

Ozuna was recognizedfor writing a record-breaking nine of the most-performed Latin songs of 2018, including “Ahora Dice,” “Criminal,” “El Farsante,” “Escápate Conmigo,” “La Modelo,” “La Rompe Corazones,” “Se Preparó,” “Te Boté (Remix)” and “Tu Foto.”

Ozuna attended the night’s festivities and took the stage to accept each one of his nine awards.

Legendary Mexican singer/songwriter Mario Quinteroof Los Tucanes de Tijuana received the BMI President’s Award.

Quintero, who has seen the fortunes of his Tucanes de Tijuana ebb and rise through the years, is in the midst of a major resurgence that includes an appearance at Coachella next month. On Tuesday night, his words of appreciation were mostly to his wife.

“I have few opportunities to recognize her,” he said, admitting he was nervous. “My wife. I call her mi cielo (my heaven). Thank you, mi cielo, for giving me the freedom I need. It’s important to say that when your partner gives you too much freedom, you can make mistakes. But when you give your partner the liberty they need to grow, it’s amazing. And it’s reciprocal.”

Producer Sebastian Krys was honored with the BMI Champion Award. Krys was not only honored for his work as a producer (Elvis CostelloAlejandro SanzCarlos Vives, La Santa CeciliaLuis Fonsi and Enrique Iglesias, among many others), but also for his work as a philanthropist through his Los Producersinitiative — which raises money for multiple music education initiatives — asked songwriters to “dig deeper” in a time of short attention spans.

“You create the raw material on which our culture is based,” he said. “Most of our music does not reflect our truth. I challenge each of you to speak from your truth. We cannot allow popular music to become a version of Instagram. Some people say ‘this is what the labels want’ or ‘this is what the platforms want.’ But as Henry Fordsaid, if I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses. Be bold, be brave, be real influencers.”

Other winners of the evening included J Balvin, who won Contemporary Latin Song of the Year for “Mi Gente,” and Espinoza Paz, named Regional Mexican Songwriter of the Year for his hits “Ésta Es Tu Canción,” “Las Cosas No Se Hacen Así” and “Ojalá Que Me Olvides.” Omar Robles won Regional Mexican Song of the Year for “El Color de Tus Ojos.”

Cardi B Earns First No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart with “La Modelo”

Cardi B has added another chart-topper to her resume…

The 25-year-old half-Dominican American rapper has earned her first No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart dated March 3, as her collaboration with Ozuna “La Modelo,” zooms 12-1 in its seventh week.

Cardi B & Ozuna

It’s Ozuna’s second No. 1 on the chart.

The track, which earns Greatest Gainer honors, rises a whopping 70 percent in audience in the week ending February 25, according to Nielsen Music, climbing to 16.84 million.

It’s the second song to vault to No. 1 from outside the top 10 in 2018, following Jennifer Lopez’s “Amor, Amor, Amor,” featuring Wisin, which also rose 12-1 (February 3).

Prior to Lopez, Don Omar and Zion & Lennox did it a little over a year ago with “Te Quiero Pa’mi,” jumping 11-1 on the December 24, 2016-dated chart.

“I’m super happy with this No. 1,” Ozuna tells Billboard. “My team and I have worked extra hard to achieve it. I thank God for everything that is happening in my career, my family and followers for the support, and of course, my friend Cardi B for being part of this. I am extremely thankful with her for giving me this opportunity and working with me on ‘La Modelo.'”

Ozuna first led Latin Airplay as the featured act on Wisin’s “Escapate Conmigo,” which spent one week at No. 1 (Sept. 9, 2017), after holding in the top 10 for 16 weeks.

Over on the Hot Latin Songs chart — which blends airplay, sales, and streams — “La Modelo” rises 6-5 as the chart’s greatest gainer in airplay. Ozuna collects his fourth top five on the list and his third this year. Concurrently, the track ascends 86-72 on the Billboard Hot 100.

On the Top Latin Albums chart, Ozuna’s Odisea spends a 26th week at No. 1, tying with Ricky Martin’s Vuelve for the fourth-most weeks ever atop the 24-year-old list.

J Balvin & Willy William’s Hit Single “Mi Gente” Reaches No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart

It’s a perfect 10 for J Balvin

The 32-year-old Colombian singer’s collaboration with Willy William’s hit single “Mi Gente” climbs 2-1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart (dated September16) in its 10th week on the list, jumping 14 percent to 16.38 million audience impressions in the week ending September 3, according to Nielsen Music.

The song earns Balvin his seventh No. 1 on the ranking and William his first.

“Mi Gente” bumps Wisin’s “Escapate Conmigo,” featuring Ozuna, from No. 1 to No. 2 in its 22nd week on the chart. It falls with a six percent decrease in audience for the week (to a total of 15.41 million impressions). The song spent one week atop the list.

“Mi Gente” also holds at its No. 2 peak on both the Hot Latin Songs and Latin Digital Song Sales charts for a seventh straight week each (trailing Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito,” featuring Justin Bieber, on both charts).

Wisin Notches Eighth Solo No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart

Make that eight solo hits for Wisin

The 38-year-old Puerto Rican rapper, singer and record producer’s single “Escapate Conmigo,” featuring Ozuna, hits No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart (dated September 9).

Wisin & Ozuna

Wisin’s song reaches the summit in its 21st week on the chart, jumping 4 percent to 18 million audience impressions in the week ending August 27, according to Nielsen Music.

The song succeeds Maluma’s “Felices Los 4,” which falls to No. 3 and reigned for two straight weeks. J Balvin and Willy William’s “Mi Gente” also rises 3-2 in its ninth week on the chart.

“Escapate Conmigo” is Wisin’s eighth solo No. 1 on the Latin Airplay chart.

Wisin previously notched 10 chart toppers between 2006 and 2012 as a member of Wisin & Yandel.

“Escapate Conmigo” is also the first No. 1 hit for Ozuna, who had charted eight other songs before hitting No. 1.

The official music video, released on March 30, has garnered 559,745,697 views on Vevo/YouTube.
