Yara Martinez to Star in Fox’s Police Drama Pilot “Deputy”

The 39-year-old Cuban American actress will co-star opposite Stephen Dorffin Deputy, Fox’s police drama pilot from Bright helmer David AyerAquaman writer Will Bealland eOne.

Written by Beall and directed by Ayer, Deputy centers on Deputy Bill Hollister (Dorff), a career lawman who’s very comfortable kicking down doors and utterly lost in a staff meeting. But when the L.A. County sheriff drops dead, Bill becomes acting sheriff, in charge of 10,000 sworn deputies policing a modern Wild West.

Martinez will play Hollister’s wife, Dr. Paula Reyes, a trauma surgeon. Strong-willed yet sensitive, she’s a good match for her husband.

Martinez was a series regular for the first two seasons of Amazon’s The Tick, playing Miss Lint. 

Martinez continues to recur as Dr. Luisa Alver on the CW’s Jane the Virgin and also is recurring on CBS’ Bull. 

CBS Films/eOne to Release Michael Garza’s “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” in August

CBS Films/eOne’s feature take on Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, starring the 18-year-old Latino actor, will open on August 9 next year.

From Oscarwinner Guillermo del Toro, who is co-writing and producing, the film is being directed by André Øvredal.

The movie centers on a group of young teens who must solve the mystery surrounding sudden and macabre deaths in a small town. The film is based on Alvin Schwartz’s young adult novel series, which del Toro has long been a fan of and owns ten of the books’ original illustrations by Stephen Gammell.

del Toro wrote with Daniel Hageman & Kevin Hageman, and the Shape of Water filmmaker is producing with Sean DanielElizabeth Grave, Jason F. Brown, and J. Miles Dale. 

In addition to Garza, who starred in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and Wayward Pines, the film also stars Zoe CollettiGabriel Rush, Austin Abrams, Dean NorrisGil Bellows, Lorraine Toussaint, Austin Zajur and Natalie Ganzhorn.

Netflix to Stream Seasons 1 & 2 of Adan Canto’s “Designated Survivor”

After being resurrected from its cancellation at ABC, the 36-year-old Mexican actor’s series Designated Survivor is officially moving seasons 1 and 2 to Netflix from its home at Hulu. The move comes after it was announced the political drama would get a third season at the streaming giant.

The news comes ahead of the release of season 3.

Originally, Hulu had U.S. SVOD rights to the first two seasons of Designated Survivor, which was originally on ABC. With the new Netflix deal, seasons 1 and 2 are now exclusively available on Netflix in the U.S. and Canada. Netflix originally had the series internationally, which made it a suitable home.

The first two seasons of Designated Survivor on ABC were co-produced by eOne and ABC Studios. Going forward, the series will be solely produced by eOne, with ABC Studios no longer involved.

The third season of the series, which stars Kiefer Sutherland, will have a new showrunner Neal Baer (Law & Order: SVU). The core cast of the series, including Sutherland, Canto, Kal Penn and Italia Ricci, are set to return, with Maggie Q in talks to join them.

Production on Season 3 is set to begin later this year for a 2019 premiere. Baer and Sutherland executive produce the series with series creator David Guggenheim.

In season 3, President Kirkman (Sutherland) will face a political reality… campaigning. What does it take to make a leader? What price will he be willing to pay? This season will explore today’s world of campaigning, smear tactics, debates, campaign finance and “fake news.” Democracy, as we know it, will hang in the balance.

The Netflix deal included a 10-episode season 3 order.

The 18-year-old Latino actor has been cast in the CBS Films/eOne feature film adaptation of Alvin Schwartz’s YA novel series Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.

In Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark a group of horrific deaths have impacted a small town and it’s up to a group of teens to solve them.

In addition to Garza, recently added cast members include Austin AbramsGabriel Rush, Austin Zajur and Natalie Ganzhorn.

They join Zoe Colletti in the André Øvredal-directed movie.

“We spent months searching for and assembling the perfect group of actors to help us realize the most terrifying adaptation that we could conceive,” said Øvredal.

Producer and screenwriter Guillermo del Toro agreed, adding, “I am honored to support Andre’s vision and, with our partners, to bring the incredible world of Scary Stories to the screen.”

del Toro has been a longtime fan of the book series and owns ten of the books’ original illustrations by Stephen Gammell.

Kevin Hageman and Dan Hageman co-wrote the screenplay with The Shape of Water Oscar-winner del Toro and Patrick Melton & Marcus Dunstan, adapting from Schwartz’s books.

CBS Films will release the film in the U.S. via their partnership with Lionsgate.

Manuel Garcia-Rulfo to Star in the Supernatural Thriller “Mary”

The 36-year-old Mexican actor has joined the cast of the supernatural thriller Mary opposite Emily Mortimer and Gary Oldman, which is currently in production in Alabama with Michael Goi at the helm.

Written by The ShallowsAnthony Jaswinski, the story follows a couple facing financial struggles who buy an old ship at auction with the hope of starting a charter business, only to discover her horrifying secrets on the isolated open waters.

Garcia-Rulfo is best known for his roles in films such as Bless Me, Ultima and Cake, as well as From Dusk till Dawn: The Series.

Garcia-Rulfo is also headlined as one of the titular characters in the 2016 remake The Magnificent Seven.

The actor will next be seen in the remake of Murder on the Orient Express.

Tooley Entertainment and eOne are co-financing and producing Mary under their first-look co-financing and international distribution deal.

eOne Acquires North American Rights to Segura’s Casino Heist Romp “Torrente, Mission: EuroVegas”

Entertainment One (eOne) has acquired all North American rights to casino heist romp Torrente, Mission: EuroVegas, starring the 50-year-old Spanish actor/comedian and Alec Baldwin.

It’s the latest installment in Spain’s biggest-ever comedy movie franchise, offering proof that select foreign-language comedies can make wave abroad.

Segura stars as the lead character, Spanish cop José Luis Torrente. In the latest installment, crooked cop Torrente gets out of jail in the year 2018 to find a different Spain from the one he knew.

Written and directed by Segura, Torrente’s fifth iteration has also closed the U.K. with eOne-owned Momentum, and Australia/New Zealand with Palace Cinemas.

The deals mean Torrente is now sold out worldwide, said its sales agent Guido Rud at FilmSharks Intl.

Torrente’s buyers, moreover, include top-tier distribution companies, such as Disney’s Buena Vista International for Latin America, Sony Pictures for Spain, Korea’s Bridgeworks Entertainment and Turkey’s Sinema.

Torrente’s five installments have grossed a total of $90.5 million in Spain.

Starz Developing “Havana Quartet” Series Starring Banderas

Antonio Banderas may soon be Havana good time on television.

Starz is developing a series set to star the 54-year-old Spanish actor, according to the network’s CEO Chris Albrecht.

Banderas will also serve as an executive producer on the series.

Havana Quartet, based on the popular book series by Cuban novelist Leonardo Padura, follows a hard-drinking, romantic Cuban Police Detective Mario Conde (Banderas) who longs to be a writer but settled for a job as a detective.

Eduardo Machado will write the pilot.

Being developed from Entertainment One Television’s Havana Quartet, eOne will produce the series and distribute the hour-long drama worldwide.

“Starz continues to see great opportunity in continued programming diversification with many communities and genres,” said Albrecht. “Partnering with eOne to develop the drama series Havana Quartet with international star Antonio Banderas will allow us to give viewers a premium show that highlights the decaying beauty of Cuba during its ‘Special Period’ — a time and place which tourists rarely got to experience.”

El Rey Network Picks Up Garcia’s “From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series” for a Second Season

It’s From Dusk Till Dawn and beyond for Jesse Garcia and his co-stars…

El Rey Network has picked up the Mexican/Spanish-American actor’s new series From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series for a 13-episode second season. Garcia portrays Texas Ranger Freddie Gonzalez on the series.

The announcement comes only two weeks after the network’s first original series debuted.

From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series has been earning bank  from distribution pacts, including a deal with Netflix, which carries the series in key international territories and is on board for Season 2, and a DVD/EST agreement with eOne for the U.S. and Canada, which makes From Dusk Till Dawn episodes available on Amazon, iTunes, Sony Playstation, Xbox, Vudu, Google Play, Cinemanow, Blackberry and Target Ticket after their El Rey premiere.

“As the television landscape becomes even more crowded, it’s important for El Rey Network to have a recurring and memorable franchise that speaks to our audience and allows us to break away from the noise of all the competition,” El Rey vice chair Scott Sassa said. “From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series is most certainly that kind of property and we are thrilled with the response from our affiliate partners, advertisers, viewers and the international community.”

From Dusk Till Dawn is based on the cult classic film of the same name by the network’s co-founder Robert Rodriguez, who created the series and directed four of the first season’s installments.

“This is a truly unique property and one that has really resonated for viewers,” he said. “It has been a joy to bring these characters back to life and have the opportunity to take our storytelling to a whole new place.”

In addition to Garcia, From Dusk Till Dawn’s international cast includes D.J. Cotrona, Zane Holtz, Eiza González, Wilmer Valderrama, Adrianne Palicki, Jake Busey, Don Johnson, Madison Davenport, Lane Garrison, Robert Patrick, and Brandon Soo Hoo.
