Herrera Honored by EIF’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund

She may be a noted fashion designer, but Carolina Herrera is also an extremely charitable woman…

The 74-year-old Venezuelan-born designer was honored by the EIF Women’s Cancer Research Fund at an event hosted by Chelsea Handler.

Herrera, who received the Nat King Cole Award, was recognized for her contributions to philanthropic organizations. Meanwhile, the night’s other honoree Kylie Minogue accepted the Courage Award for her dedication to spreading awareness following her triumph over breast cancer.

The 16th annual event, held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel by Saks Fifth Avenue, benefited the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund in the campaign for finding a cure.

Attendees included Kobe Bryant, Angie Harmon, Mitch Glazer, Kelly Lynch, Julianne Hough and Amber Valletta. Honorary Chairs Rita Wilson and Kate Capshaw, and co-founders Kelly Meyer, Anne Douglas, Quinn Ezralow, Marion Laurie and Jaime Tisch, joined guests in an effort to garner continued support for innovative cancer research.

“I want us to find a cure for breast cancer,” Wilson told The Hollywood Reporter about her support for the organization. “I want there to be a blood test where you can easily find out if you’re at risk.”

The EIF’s WCRF also funds research conducted at the National Cancer Institute (NCI)-accredited medical institutions, UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center and USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The evening closed with a musical performance by Bruno Mars.

Cruz: This Year’s “Key To The Cure” Ambassador

Penelope Cruz is hoping to raise awareness about women’s cancer research.

The 38-year-old Spanish actress, who is currently starring in Woody Allen’s To Rome With Love, has been named the Entertainment Industry Foundation’s ambassador for Saks Fifth Avenue’s 2012 Key To The Cure.

As this year’s ambassador, Cruz will don a specially designed T-shirt by noted fashion designer Carolina Herrera that promotes women’s cancer research funding.

Herrera’s limited edition T-shirt will retail for $35 at Saks Fifth Avenue and Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH stores and on saks.com. One hundred percent of the proceeds from each shirt sold will be donated to EIF’s Women’s Cancer Research Fund, benefiting charitable programs dedicated to finding new detection methods, better treatments and eventual cures for women’s cancers.

“By purchasing this year’s SAKS FIFTH AVENUE KEY TO THE CURE T-shirt, designed by Carolina Herrera, you can help continue the innovative research already in progress,” says the Oscar-winning actress. “Cancer has affected each and every one of us in one way or another and I am thrilled to be involved with this wonderful cause.”

Cruz, who bared a shoulder earlier this year in a PETA anti-fur ad, will appear in a national public service announcement wearing Herrera’s limited edition T-shirt. The PSA will appear in major fashion and lifestyle magazines in September and October.

The T-shirt debuts at Saks Fifth Avenue on October 1st.
