Cuarón Wins Two Critics’ Choice Movie Awards

Alfonso Cuarón is the Critics’ Choice…

The 52-year-old Mexican filmmaker, who earned three Oscar nominations this week, picked up two trophies at the 19th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards.

Cuarón was named Best Director by the Broadcast Film Critics Association for helming his blockbuster-hit film Gravity, which scored a leading seven wins at the awards show.

He won the Best Film Editing award with Mark Singer for the 3D sci-fi thriller starring Sandra Bullock, who was named Best Actress in an Action Movie.

Gravity lenser Emmanuel Lubezki didn’t leave empty-handed. The Mexican cinematographer and six-time Oscar nominee won the award for Best Cinematography.

Meanwhile, recent Golden Globe winner continued his winning ways, earning the Best Supporting Actor award for his critically acclaimed gender-bending role in Dallas Buyers Club.

Cuarón Earns Three Academy Award Nominations

Alfonso Cuarón has doubled his Oscar nominations in one fell swoop…

During this morning’s Academy Awards press conference, the 52-year-old Mexican multi-talented filmmaker received three nominations for his critically acclaimed film Gravity.

He’d previously earned nods for Best Original Screenplay for Y tu mamá también and Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Editing for Children of Men.

In addition to receiving a nomination for producing the Best Picture nominee, Cuarón is up for Best Director – an award he picked up at the Golden Globes – and Best Film Editing alongside Mark Sanger.

In all, the 3D sci-fi thriller starring Sandra Bullock earned a titanic ten Academy Award nominations, including a Best Actress nod for Bullock, tying David O. Russell’s drama American Hustle for the most nods this year.

Gravity’s lenser Emmanuel Lubezki follows up his American Society of Cinematographers Award nomination with an Oscar nod for Best Cinematography.

It’s the sixth Academy Award nomination for the Mexican cinematographer. He previously earned nods for lensing 1995’s A Little Princess, 1999’s Sleepy Hollow, 2005’s A New World, 2006’s Children of Men and 2011’s The Tree of Life. three of Lubezki’s nominations were for his work on Cuarón films.

But Cuarón and Lubezki aren’t the only Latinos nominated this year…

First-time Golden Globe winner Jared Leto has received his first-ever Oscar nomination.

The 42-year-old part-Spanish American actor/singer earned the nod for his gender-bending performance as male-to-female transgender character Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club. It’s a role he discusses in a featurette from the film’s distributor Focus Features.

The 86th Academy Awards will be awarded on Sunday, March 2 at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland, televised live on ABC and hosted by Ellen DeGeneres for a second time.

Lubezki Nominated for American Society of Cinematographers Award

Emmanuel Lubezki is earning serious kudos from his peers…

The Mexican cinematographer has been nominated for an ASC Award from the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) in the theatrical motion picture for Outstanding Achievement.

Lubezki, a previous winner  2012’s The Tree of Life and 2007’s Children of Men, earned the recognition for lensing Alfonso Cuarón’s international hit film Gravity, which has been hailed as “one of the most technologically impressive films to ever see the light of day” by nofilmschool.com.

“Our members believe these cinematographers have set the contemporary standard for artful, theatrical motion picture cinematography,” says ASC President Richard Crudo. “They have mastered a complex craft which contributes vitally to the storytelling process, and augments the intentions of everyone involved with the production.”

Traditionally, the organization selects five nominees, but a three-way tie this year boosts that number to seven.

In addition to his two previous wins, Lubezki was also nominated in 2000 for Sleepy Hollow.

Jonás Cuarón Earns His First BAFTA Awards Nomination

Like father, like son…

Jonás Cuarón, the son of Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, has earned his first BAFTA Awards nomination.

The Mexican filmmaker has been nominated with his father in the original screenplay category, for writing their blockbuster hit Gravity.

It’s one of the whopping 11 nominations the 3D sci-fi film earned from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, including Best Film and Best British Film.

Cuarón’s father also earned a Best Editing and Best Director nod, the latest nomination in that category for one of Entertainment Weekly’s 2013 Entertainers of the Year. He’s up against 12 Years A Slave’s Steve McQueen, American Hustle’s David O. Russell, Captain Phillips’ Paul Greengrass and The Wolf Of Wall Street’s Martin Scorsese in the director field.

Meantime, Cuarón’s longtime collaborator, Mexican cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, earned a Best Cinematography nod for his work on Gravity.

Lastly, Rush star Daniel Brühl continues to earn awards recognition for portraying real-life racing legend Niki Lauda in Ron Howard‘s Formula One racing drama. Following his SAG Award and Golden Globe nods, the 35-year-old half-Spanish actor will take on Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips), Matt Damon (Behind the Candelabra), Michael Fassbender (12 Years A Slave) and Bradley Cooper (American Hustle) in the race for the best supporting actor trophy.

The British Academy Film Awards will take place on February 16 at the Royal Opera House in London, with the ceremony broadcast exclusively on BBC One in the U.K. and in all major territories around the world.

Alfonso Cuarón is getting some serious love from the Broadcast Film Critics Association…

The 52-year-old Mexican director has earned two Critics Choice Movie Awards from the organization for his smash Sandra Bullock-starrer Gravity.

Cuarón is up for Best Director for his critically acclaimed work behind the lens of the 3D sci-fi thriller. He’s also nominated alongside Mark Sanger in the Best Editing category.

Meanwhile, the film’s Mexican cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki received a nomination in the Best Cinematography category.

In all, Gravity earned 10 Critics Choice Movie Award nominations, including a Best Picture nod.

Other Latino nominees include Daniel Brühl, who earned a nod in the Best Supporting Actor category for his performance in Ron Howard’s Formula One drama Rush, as well as Louis C.K. and Michael Peña in the Best Acting Ensemble for their work in David O. Russell’s American Hustle.

The Critics Choice Movie Awards, hosted by Aisha Tyler, will air live for the second year on the CW network on January 16th.

Cuarón’s “Gravity” to Open the 70th Annual Venice Film Festival

Alfonso Cuarón latest film project is headed to Italy…

The 51-year-old Mexican filmmaker’s  3D deep space thriller Gravity will open the 70th Venice Film Festival in an out of competition berth.

The Warner Bros. film, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, will debut on the Lido on August 28.

Bullock plays a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission alongside a veteran astronaut played by Clooney. Disaster strikes during a seemingly routine spacewalk, leaving the two completely alone — tethered to one another and spiraling into the blackness.

Gravity is the first high-profile world premiere that Venice has announced so far.

Cuarón’s first film in Venice was 2001′s Y tu mamá también which won the Golden Osella for Best Screenplay as well as the Marcello Mastroianni Award for stars Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna.

In 2006, the director’s Children Of Men won the Best Cinematography Golden Osella for Emmanuel Lubezki, who is also the director of photography on Gravity.

The Venice Film Festival runs this year from August 28-September 7.
