Shakira is a girl boss…

The 46-year-old Colombian superstar has strengthened her dominance on Billboard‘s Latin Airplay chart as “El Jefe,” her collaboration with Fuerza Regida, extends her record for the most No. 1s among women in the chart’s history.

Shakira, El JefeThe cross-genre track rises 5-1 on the chart dated November 18 and sends Karol G’s “Mi Ex Tenía Razón” to No. 2 after two weeks in charge.

“El Jefe” advances with an 18% gain in audience impressions, to 10.3 million, earned in the U.S. in the week ending November 9, according to Luminate.

It gives Fuerza Regida its second champ: “Bebe Dame,” with Grupo Frontera, took the Mexican American regional Mexican band to No. 1 for one week in March. In between, the group scored another top 10, “Mentira No Es,” with Banda MS (No. 6 high last July).

With the new ruler, Shakira improves her career total of Latin Airplay No. 1s to 21.

She remains atop the leaderboard for the most No. 1s among women since the char launched in 1994. Now she ties with Romeo Santos for eighth-most overall. Here’s a review of the artists with the most rulers on the all- Latin airplay tally, a record mostly male- dominated:

36, J Balvin
33, Ozuna
32, Enrique Iglesias
28, Daddy Yankee
23, Maluma
22, Bad Bunny
22, Wisin
21, Romeo Santos
21, Shakira
18, Ricky Martin

Elsewhere, “El Jefe” enters the top 10 on Regional Mexican Airplay, at No. 9. Shakira picks up her first top 10 there, while Fuerza Regida secures its seventh.

In addition to its radio growth, “El Jefe” has achieved multiple top 10s across Billboard charts: No. 1 on Latin Digital Song Sales, No. 4 on Hot Latin Songs, which blends airplay, digital sales, and streaming activity, and on Latin Streaming Songs, all on the October 7-dated lists.

Shakira to Release Fuerza Regida-Collab Track “El Jefe” This Week

Shakira is expanding her sound…

The 46-year-old Colombian superstar will release a new song in collaboration with Regional Mexican group Fuerza Regida.

ShakiraShakira took to social media to announce “El Jefe,” which is set for release on Wednesday, September 20. When talking about her upcoming new track during an interview with ET, Shakira didn’t reveal much and only teased, “I’m not the boss in this song, but wait and see.”

Then, she posted a snippet of “El Jefe,” Shakira’s first foray into Regional Mexican music, that’s about someone who has the mentality of a millionaire but doesn’t actually have money.

“You’re dreaming of leaving the barrio, you have everything it takes to be a millionaire, expensive taste, the mentality, you’re just missing a salary,” she sings over a fast-paced beat.

Shakira’s collab with Fuerza Regida is a reflection of Regional Mexican music’s dominance and influence on Latin music today. With acts like Fuerza at the forefront, the genre is having a record year growing in popularity in the United States and beyond. In May, Billboard reported that Regional Mexican music consumption in the U.S. jumped 42.1% year to date through May 25, outpacing gains in the Latin genre overall, as well as country, dance/electronic, rock and pop, according to Luminate.

The new song announcement arrives just days after Shakira’s show-stopping performance at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on September 12, where she sang a medley of her hits, including “She Wolf,” “Hips Don’t Lie,” “Objection” and newer hits such as “Te Felicito” and “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53.”

The singer-songwriter also made history at the VMAs, becoming the first South American artist to receive the Video Vanguard Award. She is the second Latin artist to receive the award; Jennifer Lopez, the first performer of Latin descent, received the honor in 2018.

Ruehl Cast in Fox’s “El Jefe” Pilot

HBO’s Luck may have run out of suerte… But that doesn’t mean Mercedes Ruehl’s luck has.

Ruehl has experienced a rollercoaster week… After spending several years looking after her family, the Oscar and Tony winning actress was prepared to return to acting when she signed on as a series regular on Luck. But HBO suddenly ended the series on Wednesday following the death of a third horse on the set.

Ruehl wasn’t down and out though. After reading the script for El Jefe and meeting with the writers, Ruehl decided to sign on for the project. She’s expected to start production on the pilot on Monday, less than a week after Luck was cancelled.

In addition to Ruehl, Jessica Camacho has been cast in the pilot. She’ll play Lucia, the girlfriend of Delmi’s son (Victor Rasuk).
