Mari Leivis Sanchez Takes Home Weightlifting Silver at 2024 Paris Games

The 32-year-old Colombian weightlifter claimed the silver medal in the women’s 71KG weightlifting Final on Friday with a final score of 257.

Ecuador’s Angie Paola Palacios Dajomes finished with a score of 256 to claim bronze.

Mari Leivis Sanch is a three-time silver medalist in the women’s 71 kg event at the Pan American Weightlifting Championships.

She won two medals, including gold, at the 2022 Bolivarian Games held in Valledupar, Colombia.

Caio Bonfim Claims Silver in Men’s 20KM Walk at 2024 Paris Games

The 33-year-old Brazilian race walker finished second in the Men’s 20KM Walk at the 2024 Paris Games on Thursday to claim the silver, his first-ever Olympic medal.

Bonfim finished the race with a time of 1:19:09, .54 seconds behind Ecuador’s Brian Daniel Pintado. Spain’s Alvaro Martin followed closely behind at 1:19:11 to take bronze.

Brian Daniel Pintado Wins Gold in Men’s 20KM Walk at 2024 Paris Games

It’s a golden upgrade for Brian Daniel Pintado.

The 29-year-old Ecuadorian race walker, who won the silver in the Men’s 35KM Walk at the 2023 World Championships, claimed the gold medal in the Men’s 20KM Walk at the 2024 Paris Games.

The athletes completed the 20 km on a one-kilometer circuit set at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. With three kilometers to go, a lead group of four separated themselves from the pack, battling it out for the podium.

Brian Daniel PintadoAnd it was Pintado who surged ahead to upgrade his world silver to Olympic gold, finishing in 1:18:55 in his third Olympic appearance.

“In the last few meters, I realized I was completely alone, and seeing the finish line I just kept thinking, I’m the Olympic champion, it’s me,” Pintado shared.

Brazil’s Caoi Bonfim took silver with 1:19:09 while Spain’s Alvaro Martin followed closely behind at 1:19:11 to take bronze.

The 28-year-old Mexican weightlifter claimed the bronze medal in the women’s weightlifting 76 kilograms class at the Tokyo Games.

Fuentes lifted 108 kg and 137 kg in the snatch and clean & jerk phases respectively for a total of 245 kg to earn the bronze.

Ecuador’s Neisi Dajomes claimed the gold with a total of 263kg, while Team USA’s Kate Nye won the silver with 249kg.

Fuentes wasn’t among the favorites for a medal at the start of the competition, but she made four of her six attempts to total 245kg, a far better effort than some of her rivals.

It’s the fourth medal for Mexico in weightlifting after the gold of Soraya Jiménez at the 2000 Sydney Games, the bronze of Damaris Aguirre in the 2008 Beijing Games and the bronze of Luz Acosta at the 2012 London Games.

Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz Claims First Medal by a Latino Athlete at Tokyo Games

It’s the golden hour for Richard Carapaz 

The 28-year-old Ecuadorian cyclist brought home the gold medal for Ecuador in the men’s Olympics road race at the 2020 Tokyo Games on Saturday in a pulsating finale that saw the climber drop his main rivals on the last two climbs.

It’s the first medal and gold medal for his native country, as well as the first medal and gold medal for any Latino athlete at the games.

 

Carapaz made his first acceleration with 25km to go in response to a move from Brandon McNulty (USA) before dropping his breakaway companion and soloing to the win with 5.8km to go.

 

Carapaz held onto his winning lead over the final finishing circuit on the Fuji Speedway to take the biggest one-day win of his career.

The 2019 Giro d’Italia winner finished with more than enough time to soak up the applause from the home crowd after six hours of brutal racing in hot and humid conditions.

In the sprint for the silver and bronze medals, Wout van Aert (Belgium) narrowly held off the late charge from Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar (Slovenia).

“It is incredible to see your flag as the top one, and to have this medal,” said Carapaz, who became his country’s second-ever Olympic champion after walker Jefferson Pérez in 1996.
