Netflix Renews Diego Boneta’s “Luis Miguel: La Serie” for Third & Final Season

Netflix has renewed the 30-year-old Mexican singer/actor’s Luis Miguel: La Serie for a third and final season.

The announcement comes ahead of the series’ Season 2 finale.

The musical biopic series, a production of MGM and Gato Grande Productions, a joint venture between MGM and Mexican entrepreneurs Miguel Alemán Magnani and Antonio Cue, is touted as the only officially authorized series about the fiercely private titular international Latino sensation and multi-platinum artist.

In Season 2, returning lead Boneta stars as the Grammy and Latin Grammy award-winning Puerto Rican-born Mexican singer Luis Miguel.

The show also features Macarena Achaga as ‘Luismi’s’ daughter Michelle Salas; Fernando Guallar as Mauricio Ambrosi; Pablo Cruz Guerrero as Patricio Robles; Juan Ignacio Cane as José Pérez; Teresa Ruiz as Azucena; Valery Sais as young Michelle and Axel Llunas as her younger brother.

The series intimately explores the difficulties Miguel faced to balance his family and his professional life and public persona, from the start of his flourishing career as a child star up to the early aughts.

Details about Season 3’s cast have yet to be confirmed.

The second season of “Luis Miguel: La Serie” was directed by Humberto Hinojosa and Adrian Grunberg, with scripts by Daniel Krauze, Ana Sofia Clerici, Anton Goenechea, Diego Ayala, Karin Valecillos and Paulina Barros.

Mark Burnett, Carla González Vargas, Pablo Cruz and Boneta executive produced.

It premiered worldwide on Netflix on April 18 and consisted of eight, hourlong episodes. Other Season 2 stars include Sergio Basteri; Camila Sodi; Cesar Bordon; Juan Pablo Zurita; Cesar Santana; Martin Bello; Lola Casamayor; Pilar Santacruz; Kevin Holt and Gabriel Nuncio.

Mark Burnett, current chair of MGM Television Group, helped develop the series and led Gato Grande in its first scripted project aimed at the burgeoning U.S. Hispanic market.

Luis Miguel: La Serie was first distributed in Latin America and Spain by Netflix in 2018.

Macarena Achaga to Star Opposite Andy Garcia in “Father of the Bride” Reboot

The 29-year-old Argentine-Mexican model, actress and singer is set to join Andy Garcia in the Father of the Bride reboot, which Gaz Alazraki will direct.

The film will revolve around a Cuban-American family, based on a script from Matt Lopez.

The film will tell the story of a father coming to grips with his daughter’s upcoming wedding through the prism of multiple relationships within a big, sprawling Cuban-American family. It will be more of a rom-com than previous versions of film. While this will mark the third iteration of the story, sources say this will be more in the vein of the original Spencer Tracy film and not the Steve Martin franchise from the 1990s.

Achaga will be playing the stepmother to the groom. Gloria Estefan is set to play Garcia’s wife, with Adria Arjona tapped to play the bride-to-be. Diego Boneta is on board to play the groom.

Dede Garner and Jeremy Kleiner will produce for Plan B Entertainment. Garcia and Paul Perez will executive produce.

Achaga stars in Netflix’s international hit series, Luis Miguel, playing Luis’ daughter, Michelle. She also can be seen starring in popular Mexican series such as Amar a MuerteJuliantina and El Candidto.

Lionsgate Acquires North American Rights to Diego Boneta-Starrer “Die in a Gunfight”

Lionsgate has acquired the North American rights to Collin Schiffli’s thriller, Die in a Gunfight, starring the 30-year-old Mexican actor/singer.

Lionsgate plans to release the film as a multi-platform title this summer.

In the film, starring Alexandra Daddario and Boneta, an unpredictable collection of schemers and killers collide when Ben (Boneta) reconnects with his old flame Mary (Daddario) to fight for their love against cruel fate itself.

“Audiences need fun, adrenaline fueled entertainment more so than ever,” added Schiffli. “I am thrilled and hopeful that Gunfight will deliver some heartfelt eye candy to everyone looking for a summer flick.”

Scripted by Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari, the film also stars Billy Crudup, Travis Fimmel, Justin Chatwin, Wade Allain-Marcus, and Emmanuelle Chriqui.

Producers of Die in a Gunfight include Tom Butterfield, Mark Gordon, Allyson Seeger, Adrian Politowski, Martin Metz, Jonathan Bronfman and Jason Jallet.

The production companies involved are Culmination Productions, Mark Gordon Pictures, Align, Digital Ignition Entertainment and JoBro Productions.

Netflix will release the second season of Luis Miguel: The Series, starring the 30-year-old Mexican actor/singer as the Mexican singer known as El Sol de México, on April 18, 2021, via Netflix.

The premiere comes almost three years after season one aired on April 22, 2018, and the day before Luis Miguel’s 51st birthday.

“The brighter the sun, the darker the shadows,” reads a 52-second teaser.

The series highlights Luismi‘s childhood, musical career, and the whereabouts of his missing mother, Marcela Basteri.

“The preparation and the process for this were unlike anything I’ve ever done,” Boneta said during Billboard’s 2018 Latin Music Week in Las Vegas. “I pretty much had a year to only prepare for this, which is an insane amount of time.”

 

Netflix revealed that a new episode of Luis Miguel: The Series will air every Sunday starting on April 18.

MUBI Acquires UK/Ireland Rights to Michel Franco’s Diego Boneta-Starrer “New Order”

Arthouse outfit MUBI has acquired all UK and Ireland rights to Michel Franco’s Venice Film Festival drama New Order, starring the 29-year-old Mexican singer and actor.

The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival and won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Prize.

Conceived six years ago, Franco’s timely class conflict drama sees a high-society wedding interrupted by the arrival of unwelcome guests as protests rage on the streets.

Parasite distributor Neon recently picked up the North American rights for the Spanish-language film. It will next play at BFI London Film Festival and Chicago International Film Festival. The movie also played at San Sebastian Film Festival and made its North American debut at Toronto.

Written, produced and directed by Franco, the film features an ensemble cast comprised of Boneta, Naian González Norvind, Darío Yazbek BernalLisa OwenFernando CuautleMónica Del CarmenEligio MeléndezPatricia Bernal, Roberto Medina, Enrique Singer and Gustavo Sánchez Parra. 

Boneta served as an executive producer on the project.

The 28-year-old Argentine actress/model has joined the cast of Netflix and MGM’s Gato Grande’s popular Spanish-language show Luis Miguel: The Series for the upcoming second season, which is currently taping after being delayed earlier this year due to the pandemic.

In addition to Achaga, who will portray Michelle, new additions to the cast include Fernando Guallar as Mauricio Ambrosi, Pablo Cruz Guerrero as Patricio Robles, Juan Ignacio Cane as José Pérez, Teresa Ruiz as Azucena, Valery Sais as young Michelle, and Axel Llunas as young Sergio Basteri.

They join previously announced Diego Boneta, Camila Sodi, Cesar Bordon, Juan Pablo Zurita, Cesar Santana, Martin Bello, Lola Casamayor, Pilar Santacruz, Kevin Holt and Gabriel Nuncio.

The story, told in two different timelines, will explore the difficulties of balancing Luis Miguel’s family and professional life. It’s due to launch on Netflix next year. Sources say a third season is in the works, but the streamer hasn’t confirmed the news yet.

Achaga was recently seen in Amazon series El Candidato. She is known in Latin America as a former band member of Mexican-Argentine pop group Eme 15 and for roles in series including Gossip Girl: Acapulco. Her breakout role came in the Televisa soap Amar A Muerte, where she featured in one of the first significant lesbian storylines in primetime Mexican television. Her character was then spun off into 2019 miniseries Juliantina.

Diego Boneta to Star in Collin Schiffli’s “Die in a Gunfight”

The 28-year-old Mexican actor/singer has joined the cast of Collin Schiffli’s “Die in a Gunfight,” according to Variety.

Boneta would star opposite Alexandra Daddarioin the film, with the pair playing star-crossed lovers whose romance is upended by familial tensions. 

The film follows a young man (Boneta) who falls for the daughter (Daddario) of his father’s nemesis in New York City.

Die in a Gunfightwas written by Andrew Barrerand Gabriel Ferrari, who previously collaborated on Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Boneta starred in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical Rock of Agesand in the biographical series Luis Miguel, which he also executive produced. He’ll next be seen in Terminator: Dark Fatealongside Arnold Schwarzeneggerand Linda Hamilton, and just wrapped production on Paul W.S. Anderson’s Monster Hunterstarring Milla Jovovichand Ron Perlman.

Reyes and the gang will make the trek for Paramountand Skydance’s Terminator: Dark Fate panel, which will be held July 18.

With a start time of 11:00 a.m. PT, the Dark Fate presentation will kick off the Hall H proceedings.

With Hamilton joining Schwarzenegger onstage, the panel will see the two original Terminator actors usher in a new and rising generation of Hollywood talent.

The presentation is expected to reveal new footage from the sci-fi action movie that opens on November 1.

The 26-year-old Mexican singer and actor is set to star as Luis Miguel, known as El Sol de México, in the upcoming Telemundo bio-musical series based on the life of the Grammy-winning singer.

Boneta is known for roles in television shows like Pretty Little Liars and Ryan Murphy‘s Scream Queens. On the big screen, he appeared opposite Tom Cruise in jukebox musical Rock of Ages.

Boneta recorded two albums in his career, Diego and Indigo

The authorized series based on the life and career of the chart-topping artist will be produced by Gato Grande Productions and will air on Telemundo in 2018, and later streamed via Netflix in Latin America and Spain.

“People will travel alongside with me through a surprising, unexpected and emotional journey that has shaped the artist and the person that I am today,” Luis Miguel said in a statement about the series, which joins other Telemundo biopic productions including Juan Gabriel‘s Hasta Que te Conocí (2016).
