Sasha Calle to Star as Series Regular on Apple TV+’s “Sugar”

Sasha Calle is preparing for a sweet role…

The 29-year-old Colombian-American actress has joined the cast of Apple TV+’s Sugar, starring and executive produced by Colin Farrell.

Calle, who made her film debut as Supergirl in the 2023 DC Extended Universe movie The Flash, is among a roster of new series regulars for next season that includes Shea Whigham and Raymond Lee.

They join a Season 2 series regular contingent that also includes fellow new cast additions Jin Ha, Laura Donnelly and Tony Dalton.

Created by Mark Protosevich, Sugar is a contemporary, unique take on one of the most popular and significant genres in literary, motion picture, and television history: the private detective story.

In addition to Farrell, the ensemble cast for the first season included Kirby, Amy Ryan, James Cromwell, Anna Gunn, Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry, Sydney Chandler and Alex Hernandez.

Calle is believed to be portraying a hustler working for Sugar.

Season 2 of Sugar is showrun by Sam Catlin, who also executive produces under his Short Drive Entertainment banner. Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg executive produce for Genre Films under Kinberg’s first look deal with Apple TV+.

Farrell, Scott Greenberg, Chip Vucelich, Christopher Rogers and Gary Tieche also serve as executive producers. Claudine Farrell co-executive produces.

Calle will next be seen in Sony Picture Classics’ On Swift Horses alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones and Jacob Elordi, Netflix’s RIP and Wardriver.

Sony Pictures Classics to Release Jacob Elordi’s Drama “On Swift Horses” in Theaters This April

Jacob Elordi’s latest project will be hitting theaters swiftly this spring.

Sony Pictures Classics has scheduled an April 25 theatrical release date for the The 27-year-old half-Spanish Australian actor’s drama On Swift Horses.

The announcement comes in the wake of news that the film, which co-stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, will close out this year’s South by Southwest Film & TV Festival (SXSW).

Based on the novel by Shannon Pufahl, the film is directed by Daniel Minahan and follows Muriel and her husband Lee as they are beginning a bright new life in California upon Lee’s return from the Korean War. But their newfound stability is upended by the arrival of Lee’s charismatic brother, Julius, a wayward gambler with a secret past. A dangerous love triangle quickly forms. When Julius takes off in search of the young card cheat he’s fallen for, Muriel’s longing for something more propels her into a secret life of her own, gambling on racehorses and exploring a love she never dreamed possible.

Will Poulter, Sasha Calle and Diego Calva also star.

The film is presented by Ley Line Entertainment, FirstGen Content, Cor Cordium, The Dan Corp, Wavelength and Killer Films.

The film is executive produced by Nate Kamiya, David Darby, Claude Amadeo, Randal Sandler, Chris Triana, Jenifer Westphal, Joe Plummer, Christine Vachon, Mason Plotts, Alvaro R. Valente, Bryce Kass, Lauren Shelton, Jeffrey Penman, Elordi, Edgar-Jones, Teddy Schwarzman and John Friedberg.

Elordi’s previous credits include The Kissing Booth film series, Euphoria, Priscilla and Saltburn.

Jacob Elordi in Early Talks to Star in Ridley Scott’s “The Dog Stars”

The 27-year-old half-Spanish Australian actor is in early talks to lead The Dog Stars, Ridley Scott’s post-apocalyptic thriller for 20th Century Studios, based on the 2012 novel by Peter Heller.

Elordi looks to step in for Scott’s Gladiator II star, Paul Mescal, who was forced to depart due to scheduling conflicts after being tapped to star in Sam Mendes’ Beatles anthology, where he’s rumored to be playing Paul McCartney.

Scott first hinted at the possibility of Mescal’s exit in a December conversation with filmmaker Christopher Nolan on Gladiator II.

Set in a near future where an unnamed pandemic has decimated American society, The Dog Stars will have Elordi playing Hig, a civilian pilot living a lonely life on an abandoned Colorado airbase with his dog and a tough ex-marine. The two men couldn’t be more mismatched but depend on each other to fend off roaming invaders. When a random transmission beams through the radio of his 1956 Cessna, the voice ignites a hope deep inside the pilot that a better life exists outside their tightly controlled perimeter. Risking everything, he flies past his point of no return and follows its static-broken trail.

Mark L. Smith penned the script for the film, which is the next on Scott will direct.

Known for starring on HBO’s Euphoria, Elordi is due to shoot that series’ final season next year, along with Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights for Warner Bros, where he stars opposite Margot Robbie.

This year, he’ll be seen playing the title role in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein for Netflix.

Other upcoming projects include On Swift Horses, the Daniel Minahan drama co-starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, which premiered at TIFF, and Prime Video’s Australian miniseries The Narrow Road to the Deep North.

Anthony Ramos to Star in Ryan Murphy’s New Series “The Beauty”

Anthony Ramos has landed a Beauty-ful new project…

The 32-year-old Puerto Rican actor/singer and Twisters star has joined the cast of Ryan Murphy’s new series The Beauty, which has been ordered to series by FX.

Ramos is part of a star-studded cast of The Beauty, part of Murphy’s Disney deal, that includes Evan Peters, Jeremy Pope and Ashton Kutcher.

Peters, Ramos and Pope also executive produce.

Co-created, written and exec produced by Murphy and Matt Hodgson, The Beauty is based on the comic books by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley.

Production on the 11-episode first season is slated to begin this fall, likely in November.

Per usual for a Ryan Murphy project, no official details about the premise and the characters are provided.

The 2016 graphic novel The Beauty is about an STD that makes those affected beautiful. But the disease, dubbed “the Beauty,” eventually kills its hosts as part of a suspected sinister government plot.

The main characters in the comics are detectives Drew Foster and Kara Vaughn, partners on beauty crime cases who have to find their way past corrupt politicians, vengeful federal agents, and a terrifying mercenary out to collect the price on their heads.

The TV series adaptation is reportedly a two-hander, with a male and female lead.

The search is under way for an actress to join Peters, Ramos, Pope and Kutcher.

Chatter about The Beauty first started in June, with Murphy’s frequent collaborator Peters said to be attached as star and executive producer. By August, the cast started to take shape with Ramos, Pope and Kutcher either set or in negotiations.

The series is produced by 20th Television in association with Ryan Murphy Television.

Ramos recently starred in Universal’s summer tentpole Twisters alongside Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones and in the latest installment in the Transformers franchisee, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

“Twisters,” Starring Anthony Ramos, Earns Nearly $81 Million on Opening Weekend

Twisters, a sequel to the almost 30-year-old hit Twister, starring the 32-year-old Puerto Rican actor/singer, blew past expectations to gross $80.5 million in the third-best opening of the year at the box office.

Twisters was projected to rake in roughly $50 million at the box office in its opening weekend but topped that by more than 60%, putting it behind only Dune: Part Two and Inside Out 2 for the year’s biggest opening weekends.

The film, billed as a “stand-alone sequel” to its 1996 predecessor, was liked by 78% of critics and a whopping 92% of audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, earning praise as a “wonderfully mindless adventure” and “fun summer blockbuster.”

The impressive debut gives Twisters the largest opening weekend ever for a disaster movie in unadjusted terms, besting 2004’s The Day After Tomorrow ($68.4 million).

Twisters is helping the summer box office rebound from a lackluster start that threatened to pull down year-end box office projections beyond their already-diminished expectations, adding to a series of surprise summer successes that have so far included Bad Boys: Ride or Die and A Quiet Place: Day One.

In addition to Ramos, who portrays Javi in the film, the film also stars Glenn Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones.

The first trailer for Universal‘s Twisters, starring the 32-year-old Puerto Rican actor/singer, has been released.

Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Ramos star in the new chapter to the 1996 box office hit. Lee Isaac Chung directs the film from a script by Mark L. Smith. The film is co-financed by Warner Bros.

The supporting cast includes Kiernan Shipka, David Corenswet, Daryl McCormack, Sasha Lane, Maura Tierney and Katy O’Brian.

Starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, the original Twister was a massive hit in 1996, scoring almost $500M at the worldwide box office, due in no small part to the film’s groundbreaking special effects.

The film followed a pair of storm chasers who risk their lives in an attempt to test an experimental weather alert system. The film was helmed by Speed director Jan De Bont and executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, with a screenplay by author Michael Crichton.

Plot details have been kept under wraps on the big-budget sequel, which began filming around Oklahoma City in May 2023. Filming was suspended in July due to the SAG-AFTRA strike but production resumed in November 2023, wrapping the following month.

The film is scheduled to be released in the U.S. by Universal and internationally by Warner Bros in July 2024.

Brandon Perea to Star in Upcoming “Twister” Sequel, “Twisters”

Brandon Perea is getting twisted…

The 27-year-old half-Puerto Rican actor will star in the upcoming Twister sequel.

Perea, a standout in Jordan Peele’s Nope, joins Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell and Anthony Ramos in Twisters, directed by Lee Isaac Chung from a script by writer Mark L. Smith.

The film, from Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. and Amblin Entertainment, is described as a “new chapter” of the 1996 movie, which followed a team of storm chasers as they hunted down the most powerful tornado in decades.

Plot details, including Perea’s role, are being kept under wraps.

Twisters is slated for release on July 19, 2024.

The original Twister was a massive hit, earning more than $494 million at the worldwide box office, which is often credited to the film’s groundbreaking special effects. Starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, the film was helmed by director Jan De Bont and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, from a screenplay by Michael Crichton.

Before Nope, Perea was best known for his work in Netflix’s The OA, where he played Alfonso “French” Sosa for two seasons. Then, Perea auditioned for Peele, delivering such a compelling performance that the Oscar winner rewrote the part of Angel Torres to suit the actor, casting him alongside Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun and Michael Wincott.

“This is the greatest miracle to ever experience,” Perea told Variety on the red carpet at the film’s world premiere last July. “For Jordan to change the role for me is just truly a blessing. And I’m glad I just went with my gut feeling of, like, you know what, let me go do something different. I know Jordan is just full of surprises, so I was just like, ‘Let me surprise him.’ So I’m glad that I was able to.”

In another interview with Variety, Perea explained that Angel, who works as a tech expert at Fry’s Electronics, was written as more of a cheery, can-do guy, but Perea brought a more downbeat, angsty approach to the part.

Following his scene-stealing performance, Perea was selected as one of BAFTA’s Breakthrough Artists for 2022 and honored with the rising star award for film at the Critics Choice second annual Celebration of Latino Cinema and Television.

Sebastian Lelio to Direct NASA-Themed Film “Voyagers”

Sebastian Lelio is preparing for a special voyage(rs)…

The 49-year-old Chilean director, screenwriter, editor and producer will helm Voyagers, his next film at FilmNation Entertainment.

Andrew Garfield is attached to play astronomer Carl Sagan and Daisy Edgar-Jones is expected to play Cosmos filmmaker Ann Druyan.

The feature is produced by Ben Browning for FilmNation Entertainment, Lynda Obst, and Druyan.

The film is set in 1977 as NASA prepared to launch humanity’s first interstellar probes and a team led by Sagan set out to create a message to accompany them — The Golden Record. But what starts out as a race-against-the-clock mission becomes an epic, unexpected love story between Sagan and his collaborator Druyan. FilmNation Entertianment paired Druyan with screenwriters Lelio and Jessica Goldberg, who wrote the original screenplay based on interviews with Druyan and many others who worked on the Golden Record project.

Lelio most recently co-wrote and directed The Wonder, starring Florence Pugh with House Productions and Element Pictures producing for Netflix. It was nominated for Outstanding British Film of the Year at last year’s BAFTA.

The 31-year-old Puerto Rican actor and singer is in talks to join Twisters, a new chapter to the 1996 box office hit, for Amblin Entertainment and Universal Pictures. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell are also on board.

Lee Isaac Chung is on board to direct from a script by Mark L. Smith. The film will be co-financed by Warner Bros.

EVP Production Sara Scott and creative executive Jacqueline Garell will oversee Twisters for Universal Pictures, and Ashley Jay Sandberg will oversee for Kennedy/Marshall.

Following breakout roles in the Broadway smash Hamilton and Oscar-winning A Star Is Born, the Grammy-winning and Emmy-nominated Ramos has begun filling a slate with upcoming franchises. Next up, he leads Paramount’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

He will also star in the upcoming Marvel series Iron Heart for Disney+, as well as the feature films Distant for Amblin and Dumb Money for Sony.

Ramos inaugurated the dual roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in the Tony-winning Broadway musical Hamilton and earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor for his performance as Usnavi in John M. Chu’s In the Heights.

Jacob Elordi to Star in Ley Line Entertainment & FirstGen Content’s “On Swift Horses”

The 25-year-old Spanish-Australian actor and Euphoria star will star in Ley Line Entertainment and FirstGen Content have set an all-star ensemble for its co-production of On Swift Horses.

Elordi will star opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones, Will Poulter, Diego Calva and Sasha Calle in the film.

Daniel Minahan will direct with Peter Spears and FirstGen’s Mollye Asher producing.

Based on the novel by Shannon Pufahl, the story follows newlyweds Muriel and Lee who are beginning a bright new life when he returns from the Korean War. However, this newfound stability is upended by the arrival of Lee’s charismatic younger brother, Julius, a wayward gambler with a secret. A dangerous love triangle is quickly formed, as the three vow to start a new life together in California, but their bid for the American Dream is blown apart when Julius disappears and heads for Las Vegas instead. Muriel embarks on a secret life of her own, gambling on racehorses and discovering a love she never thought possible.

Ley Line and FirstGen are financing alongside Wavelength.

The project has begun filming in Los Angeles.
