Daddy Yankee Earns 26th No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart with “Remix”

Daddy Yankee is remixing his way to the top of the charts…

The 45-year-old Puerto Rican rapper, singer and composer has reached the summit of Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart as “Remix” reaches the No. 1 spot after 18 weeks to lead the August 6-dated ranking.

Daddy YankeeThe veteran singer now has 26 No. 1s on the chart, still the fourth-most among all acts.

“Remix” soars 11-1 with a 63% increase in audience impressions (rising to 10.58 million for the week) in the tracking week ending July 31, according to Luminate. It also takes the Greatest Gainer trophy among the 50-title deep list.

Among the song’s greater radio supporters were New York and Washington, D.C. markets, starting with WSKQ with 1.4 million impressions (up 27%) and WXNY with 843,000 (up 93%), both in NY. Meanwhile WLZL and WDCN in D.C. showed an increment of 147% (121,000) and 400% (300,000), respectively.

The tracking week included Daddy Yankee’s La Última Vuelta tour launch on July 25 in Denver, which likely fueled promotion around the track in radio stations.

The trek in support of his Legendaddy album which debuted at No. 1 on Top Latin Albums (April 9) — his seventh champ.

“Remix” is the first of three singles from the Legendaddy album to secure a spot on the all-genre Latin Airplay chart. It was succeeded by “Por Última Vez,” with Bad Bunny (No. 44 debut and peak, April 23) and “Hot,” with Pitbull, which hits a new high of No. 25 on the current chart week.

As “Remix” rallies to the summit after 18 weeks, it becomes Daddy Yankee’s second-longest climb to No. 1 among a collection of 26 champs (dating back to “Rompe” in 2005).

Elena Rose Signs Record Deal with Warner Music Latina

Elena Rose is ready to record more of her own music… 

Warner Music Latina has signed a record deal with the Venezuelan singer-songwriter.

Elena RoseOver the past two years, Rose has become the go-to songwriter for artists like Becky G, Selena Gomez, Rauw Alejandro, Jennifer Lopez and Maluma, among others, while also releasing her own music (“La Ducha,” “Picachu”) via her indie label, Guerrera de la Luz.

“It feels like the beginning of something that was meant to be and I feel grateful that I am in a place where I feel understood, comfortable, but also excited to grow and learn even more and get out of that comfort zone to get to where we want to go so it can be truly timeless, which is a key word for me,” Rose said about the deal. “I think I’m surrounded by an amazing team that understands my vision and is willing to come with me on this crazy ride of being timeless.”

Following a move from Venezuela to Miami to pursue a career in music, Rose cites Becky G recording one of her songs, “Dollar,” as her “big break.” The track peaked at No. 27 on Hot Latin Songs (chart dated Nov. 1, 2019). Since, Rose has been on a spree writing back-to-back hits such as Maluma and J.Lo’s “Pa Ti,” Daddy Yankee and Marc Anthony’s “De Vuelta Pa’ La Vuelta” and she co-wrote five of the seven songs on Gomez’s first Spanish project, Revelación, released last year.

“Elena is a unique artist. Her lyrics, her voice, her presence and the ability she has to convey emotions is unparalleled. We are proud to be able to work together to fulfill her vision, deliver her music to the public, and make it timeless,” offered Alejandro Duque, president at Warner Music Latina.

Rose is currently working on new music that will be part of her debut album that, which is expected before the end of the year.

J Balvin & Karol G Lead Pack of Premios Juventud Nominees with 11 Nods Each

J Balvin and Karol G are the leaders of the pack…

The 2022 Premios Juventud nominations have been revealed, with the 37-year-old Colombian singer and rapper and the 31-year-old Colombian singer-songwriter each earning 11 nods.

J Balvin, Karol GJ Bavin and Karol G are followed by nine-time nominee Rauw Alejandro and Farruko with eight.

Balvin, Karol, Farruko and Rauw Alejandro are up for the coveted album of the year prize, alongside Sebastian Yatra, Justin Quiles, Daddy Yankee, Camilo, Rosalia and Natti Natasha.

Other top nominees include Angela Aguilar, Camilo and Grupo Firme with seven nominations each, followed by Anitta, Christian Nodal, El Alfa, Maluma and Rosalia with six nominations each.

Celebrating the trendiest artists in Latin entertainment, 31 awards will be handed out to music stars, actors and fashionistas.

This year, 10 new categories have been added: female artist – on the rise, male artist – on the rise, my favorite actor, my favorite actress, best onscreen couple, my favorite streaming artist, best couple song, tropical hit, the best beatmakers, and best fandom.

Fans have until June 27 to vote at PremiosJuventud.com.

In addition to the nominees, Univision unveiled bachata crooner Prince Royce, Grupo Firme’s Eduin Caz, Mexican pop star Danna Paola, and Dominican TV personality Clarissa Molina as the ceremony’s co-hosts.

The 2022 Premios Juventud will air live at 7:00 pm ET on Thursday, July 21, from the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico, via Univision.

Yahritza y Su Esencia Among the Latinx Acts Named to Billboard’s 21 Under 21 List

Yahritza Martinez has proven she is one to watch…

The 15-year-old Mexican American singer and her brothers, who make up the act Yahritza y Su Esencia, have been named to Billboard’s 21 Under 21 list, Billboard’s annual celebration of some of the most exciting and successful young artists in the music industry including Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish and more.

Last month, Yahritza became the youngest Latin performer to enter the Billboard Hot 100 chart with “Soy El Unico.”

To date, Yahritza and her brothers have notched 52.9 million streams.

But Yahritza y Su Esencia aren’t the only Latinx act to make this year’s list.

Eslabon Armado, consisting of Brian Tovar, Pedro Tovar, Ulises Gonzalez and Damian Fidel Pacheco, have released four consecutive chart-topping albums over the past two years — all of which hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Albums chart.

The band took a longer-than-usual break before releasing its latest album, Nostalgia, on May 5. During that time, the group added new members Gonzalez and Pacheco.

“Releasing back-to-back albums was good for our career, but we decided to take a break writing new music so that we could come back stronger,” the Mexican-American sierreño group says. “Our biggest challenge as young artists is staying relevant and creating music that connects with our fans.”

Ángela Aguilar is being heralded for logging 240.1 million streams in her young career.

The 18-year-old Mexican American singer, the daughter of Pepe Aguilar, says she “had been working with my parents’ record label all my life,” having signed to Machín Récords herself in 2012.

Nearly a decade later, in 2020, she scored her first No. 1 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Airplay chart with the Christian Nodal-assisted single “Dime Cómo Quieres.”

Aguilar says the biggest benefit of being a young artist is “the ability to DM someone about a collaboration.”

Earlier this year, she scored her second No. 1 on the chart with “Ahí Donde Me Ven.”

The Latin Grammy nominee is eager to explore acting, like her father has, and says some of his best career advice includes being “respectful of your craft and the public — to keep your roots well-embedded in your heart.”

Tiago PZK has notched 7.1 million streams.

The 20-year-old Argentine singer and rapper was only 6 years old when he discovered his passion for music, thanks to Daddy Yankee’s 2007 song “Impacto (Remix)” (featuring Fergie).

Tiago PZK (who also cites Justin Bieber as inspiration) has since created his own fusion of R&B, reggaetón and alternative rock, best heard on his five Billboard Global 200 hits: “Además de Mi,” “No Me Conocen,” “Entre Nosotros,” “Salimo de Noche” and “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 48.”

In 2021, the artist born Tiago Uriel Pacheco signed a worldwide publishing agreement with Sony Music Publishing U.S. Latin and, this year, a record deal with Warner Music Latina (through a partnership with indie Grand Move Records). Looking ahead, he says he’s most excited to tour: “It will make me travel the world and strengthen me mentally.”

DannyLux has garnered 4.8 million streams.

The 18-year-old Chicano alt-rocker is a self-taught musician who hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Songwriters chart at just 17 years old thanks to his work on Eslabon Armado’s “Jugaste y Sufrí” (off the band’s third album, Corta Venas).

The sierreño artist has since signed a record deal with Warner Music Latina (in partnership with his indie label, VSP Music) and released his ultra-melancholic album, Perdido Sin Ti. He’s already working on new music because, as he says, consistency is key. “Since I’m young, I have so much time to grow up to be the best artist I can be,” he says, citing Bad Bunny’s career as an inspiration because “he never gave up.”

The Linda Lindas, comprised of Mila de la Garza, Eloise Wong, Lucia de la Garza and Bela Salazar, have logged 6.9 million streams.

The all-girl group broke out onto the scene with their viral hit “Racist, Sexist Boy,” which they performed live from the L.A. Public Library.

Daddy Yankee Earns Seventh No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums Chart

Daddy Yankee is going out with a bang…

The 45-year-old Puerto Rican rapper, singer and songwriter as earned his seventh No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart as Legendaddy debuts at No. 1 on the April 9-dated list.

Daddy YankeeThe 19-track set, released March 25 via El Cartel/Republic, stands out as his first album in over 10 years and is set to be a farewell celebration of his 32-year musical career.

Streaming powers the majority of the Legendaddy’s first-week activity. Just under 27,000 units stem from streaming equivalent album units, 2,000 comprise traditional album sales, while the remaining units derive from track equivalent album units.

Legendaddy starts with 29,000 equivalent album units earned in the U.S. in the week ending March 31, according to Luminate, formerly MRC Data. That’s the largest week in terms of units earned this year for any Latin album, ahead of Bad Bunny’s YHLQMDLG which logged 22,000 units on the April 2-dated survey.

Legendaddy is Daddy Yankee’s first No. 1 on Top Latin Albums in almost a decade. He last ruled with the two-week champ Prestige in 2012. In between he posted one top 10: King Daddy (No. 7 high) in November 2013.

The set concurrently opens at No. 8 on Billboard 200, the Puerto Rican’s highest charting album there. He’s charted one other top 10, the No. 9-peaking El Cartel: The Big Boss in 2007.

The Top Latin Albums chart ranks the most popular Latin albums of the week in the U.S. based on multimetric consumption as measured in equivalent album units. Units comprise album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). As Legendaddy arrives, 12 songs from the album debut on Hot Latin Songs, which blends airplay, streaming data, and digital sales, led by “X Última Vez,” with Bad Bunny at No. 6. The song traces its start to 6.51 million U.S. streams earned in the week ending March 31. It also benefits from 700 sales downloads, which prompts a No. 11 debut on Latin Digital Song Sales.

J Balvin to Co-Headline New ‘Viva! L.A. Music Festival’ This Summer

J Balvin is ready to Viva Los Angeles…

The 36-year-old Colombian reggaetonero will co-headline Viva! L.A., a new, one-day festival set to take place at L.A.’s Dodger Stadium on June 25.

J BalvinThe new festival is being held to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Viva! Pomona, an annual festival launched 10 years ago.

Produced by Goldenvoice, the Viva! L.A. Music Festival will also be headlined by Daddy Yankee, Becky G and Kali Uchis.

The multi-genre fest will also feature performances by Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, Lenin Ramirez, Carin Leon, Tainy, Carla Morrison, Ivy Queen, Cuco, Los Dos Carnales, The Marías, Los Tucanes de Tijuana, Chicano Batman, Ed Maverick, Cazzu, La Sonora Dinamita, Lido Piemienta, Eslabon Armado, among many others.

Additionally, the festival will donate $1 of every ticket sold to the Los Angeles-based nonprofit No Us Without You LA, which is committed to feeding L.A.’s undocumented immigrant communities.

Launched in the pandemic, the volunteer-run organization now provides support to “hundreds of food insecure hospitality, day laborers, street vendors and mariachi families.”

Viva! was originally created a decade ago by Rene Contreras who wanted to bring resources to his hometown in Southern California via backyard shows and gigs at local spots. “Viva! goes beyond just a music festival, it has a strong mission of building community and representation, which has led to its cult following that started in L.A. and has since gone global,” according to a press release. “The fest celebrates those often overshadowed immigrants, youth of color, the underserved, the working class in the suburbs, various marginalized communities and artists that have long been pushed out of the larger anglo music arena.”

The Viva! Pomona shows will still continue under the Viva! umbrella.

Daddy Yankee Announces Retirement with Final Album & Tour

Daddy Yankee is officially retiring from music.

The 45-year-old Puerto Rican rapper, singer and songwriter, known as the “King of Reggaetón,” will culminate his musical run with Legendaddy, his first new studio album in 10 years, and a world tour.

Daddy YankeeBorn Raymond Ayala, Daddy Yankee’s career exploded with 2004’s breakthrough hit “Gasolina,” launching a genre that altered the sound and business of Latin music and became a global phenomenon.

Daddy Yankee had hinted at retirement and a last album and tour during an interview at Billboard’s Latin Music Week last year, but had yet to make an official announcement.

“Today, I’m announcing my retirement from music by giving you my best production and my best concert tour,” Daddy Yankee said in a statement in a press release issued on Sunday, March 20. “I will say goodbye celebrating these 32 years of experience with this new collector’s item, the album Legendaddy. I’m going to give you all the styles that have defined me, in one single album.”

Daddy Yankee’s Legendaddy will be released on May 24 at 8:00 pm ET.

His La Última Vuelta World Tour, a five-month trek, is set to kick off on August 10 in Portland, Oregon and run through December. Pre-sale tickets will go on sale on March 25, with a general public sale to follow on March 30. A full set of current tour dates is available on his official website.

Daddy Yankee has had six No. 1s on the Top Latin Albums chart, starting with 2004’s Barrio Fino, the first-ever reggaetón album to hit that spot. As of March 2022, he’s seen 76 entries on Latin Airplay and 86 on Hot Latin Songs, including the record-shattering “Despacito” alongside Luis Fonsi.

“I like to say I took the bullets,” he told Billboard in 2021 of bringing reggaetón to the mainstream music market. “I wanted people to understand my essence, where I come from, what I represent. But at the same time, I wanted to take my culture to the very top. I can’t tell you there was a formula. Reggaetón was initially only known on the East Coast. When I released Barrio Fino, the West Coast didn’t get it. I’d go to Los Angeles or Mexico and people knew Daddy Yankee, but they didn’t know what reggaetón was. I had to take the culture with me everywhere so it became permanent instead of fizzling out like other genres where artists simply promote themselves. When I did promotion, I talked about all the artists in my album: ‘This is me. But this album also features Zion & Lennox, Plan B, Ivy Queen.’ I had to play their music and say, ‘This is them. This is reggaetón.’”

Rosalía Releases New Edgy Reggaeton-Meets-Jazz Track “Saoko

The 28-year-old Spanish Grammy-winning singer and songwriter, who announced she’ll be releasing her upcoming album Motomami in March, has released her latest track “Saoko.”

Rosalia, SaokoRosalia’s experimental identity thrives in the edgy and irresistible reggaetón bop that’s unorthodoxly fused with improvised jazz.

The track also samples the 2004 anthem “Saoco” by Wisin and Daddy Yankee.

“Naming my next track ‘SAOKO’ and sampling Yankee and Wisin for me is the most direct homage I can make to classic reggaetón, a genre that I love and that has been a constant and great inspiration throughout the MOTOMAMI project,” Rosalia said in a statement.

The energetically-pumped video for the new track was directed by Valentin Petit, where Rosalía is as fierce as ever with an all-women biker gang in tow.

Maluma Among the Headlining Acts for This Year’s Baja Beach Fest

Maluma is headed south of the border this summer…

The 27-year-old Colombian singer-songwriter will co-headline this year’s Baja Beach Fest, which will return to the beaches of Mexico this summer.

Maluma, Quay Australia,In addition to Maluma, the Rosarito-based fest will also be headlined by Anuel AA, Farruko and Wisin y Yandel.

The festival will also feature a headlining performance from Sinaloan heroes Banda MS.

The festival is slated to run two weekends in a row, from August 12-14 and August 19-21 for three days each. Each weekend will close out with a headlining set from Daddy Yankee, who recently suggested on social media he would be heading out on his last world tour this year.

The Reggaeton and Latin Trap festival will also see sets from Myke Towers, Natanael Cano, Sech, Jhay Cortez, El Alfa, Natti Natasha and more.

Jay Wheeler, Tokischa, Mora, Nicki Nicole, Arcángel and VF7 and Lunay, among others, are also set to perform at the beachside resort.

Baja Beach Fest first emerged as a one-day event in 2018 and has continued to grow each year.

In 2019, the festival expanded to two days and welcomed top-tier talent including Ozuna, J Balvin, Becky G, Bad Bunny and Nicky Jam.

In 2020, the festival postponed due to the pandemic and returned in 2021 with performances from Ozuna, Balvin and Karol G for 30,000 fans.

Ashanti to Perform on ABC’s “Dick Clark’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest” Program

Ashanti is changing up her New Year’s Eve plans…

The 41-year-old half-Afro-Dominican singer/actress and Ja Rule will join Journey as headliners for ABC’s Dick Clark’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest in Times Square. AshantiAshanti’s last minute addition comes as Karol G, who originally had been scheduled, canceled her performance.

The changes are the latest for the New Year’s Eve special, after LL Cool J announced yesterday he had tested positive for COVID-19 and would not be performing as scheduled, and R&B singer Chlöe also had dropped out.

Other A-list stars and performers still scheduled for Dick Clark’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest include Pose alum Billy Porter, who co-hosts in New Orleans, Daddy Yankee in Puerto Rico and a Los Angeles bill that includes Ciara, Avril Lavigne & Travis Barker, Big Boi, OneRepublic and French Montana.

There have been concerns about proceeding with New Year’s Eve events in New York as the city has seen infection rates skyrocket due to the highly contagious Omicron variant.

NY Mayor Bill de Blasio last week had announced that the city would be proceeding with the New Year’s Eve Ball Drop but with fewer revelers and tighter rules, including masks and social distancing. In light of the decision by the city to keep the celebration on, ABC is proceeding with Rockin’ Eve 2022 while adhering to CDC/local protocols regarding audience attendees in Times Square.

Fox last week canceled its New Year’s Eve special – Fox’s New Year’s Eve Toast & Roast 2022 – as a result of the rising spread of the Omicron variant in New York. The special also was set to be produced in Times Square.
