HBO Max to Release “Menudo: Forever Young” Documentary This Summer

HBO Max will release Menudo: Forever Young, a new documentary about the Latin American boy band that helped make the 50-year-old Puerto Rican singer, songwriter and actor a star.

Ricky Martin, MenudoHailing from filmmakers Angel Manuel Soto and Kristofer Ríos, the documentary will be released on June 23.

The premiere will follow the project’s debut at the 2022 Tribeca Festival on June 11.

Menudo was formed by producer Edgardo Diaz in 1977 with five original members: Ricky Melendez, brothers Carlos and Oscar Meléndez, and the Sallaberry brothers, Fernando and Nefty. The group changed members often mostly after the pre-teen and early teenage boys aged out around age 15 or 16. Two of its most famous members include Ricky Martin and Draco Rosa (as Robbi Rosa).

Diaz, who served as the band’s manager, was accused of sexual abuse by multiple members beginning in 1991. He denied the allegations that same year on El Show De Cristina, a popular talk show at the time hosted by Cristina Saralegui.

Menudo disbanded in 2009 though reunion tours and performances have taken place with various former members.

The four-part documentary will deep dive into the rise and fall of the boy band, including the allegations against Diaz.

“The Puerto Rican diaspora in New York played a critical role in the success of Menudo and its crossover in the US, shutting down traffic for blocks surrounding the band’s hotel and selling out Madison Square Garden on multiple occasions,” said Soto in a statement. “We couldn’t be more excited to premiere this series in their backyard at TriBeCa and honor their contribution to the band’s legacy.”

Menudo: Forever Young is executive produced by Cristina Costantini and Jeff Plunkett of Muck Media, Alex Fumero of Trojan Horse, Bryn Mooser and Justin Lacob of XTR, and Soto.

Costantini and Fumero most recently collaborated on the popular Netflix documentary Mucho, Mucho Amor following the life of Walter Mercado.

 

Saralegui Receives US Hispanic Chamber’s “Ultimate Latina Award”

There’s no denying that Cristina Saralequi is an ultimate star in the Latino community… And now she’s got an award to prove it.

The 64-year-old Cuban American journalist, actress and talk show host received the Ultimate Latina Award during the 33rd annual convention of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Saralagui, commonly referred to as the “Latina Oprah” received the special USHCC prize for her attempts to talk openly about issues like sex education for teenagers, AIDS and the problems associated with human rights that affect the Latino community.

“Supporting the aspirations of young women and girls has been an important calling throughout my life. By accepting this award,” said Saralegui after claiming her award. “I hope that more will seize the opportunities provided by the enduring American Dream”

“The USHCC is proud to recognize Cristina Saralegui, one of the most prominent and influential Latinas in America,” said USHCC chairwoman Nina Vaca. “Not only does her remarkable success as an entrepreneur espouse the values of The Ultimate Latina, so too does her commitment to the betterment of society through her unique voice and her philanthropic efforts,” Vaca said.

Saralegui began her career at Vanidades magazine and later launched her program El Show de Cristina on Univision in 1989, which for years was the network’s most-watched program until it was cancelled.

More than 5,000 Hispanic businessowners, corporate executives, local chamber of commerce leaders from around the country and public officials are attending the national convention, which is being held in Los Angeles.

Cristina to Make Satellite Radio Debut

She’s one of the most influential Hispanic women… And now Cristina Saralegui is expanding her media empire.

The 63-year-old Cuban American award-winning journalist and talk show host has partnered with the National Latino Broadcasting to create Cristina Radio, an entire satellite radio channel built around Saralegui.

The project—part of a two-channel agreement with Sirius XM Radio—opens a new phase in Saralegui’s illustrious career and marks her satellite radio debut.

Cristina Radio, which will transmit on SiriusXM channel 146, will offer listeners a wide variety of programming 24/7. Its roster includes: an innovative interactive morning talk show; Cuerpo y Figura, nutrition and fitness; Dr. Martiza Fuentes…Contigo, health news; Querer es Poder, personal motivation; Animania, for pet lovers; Rumbo al Exito, stimulating business growth; Autos 0-60, automobiles; Al Gusto, cooking; Acceso Legal, legal advice; and Cristina Entre Amigos, a weekly one-hour live broadcast hosted by Cristina herself addressing social issues. In addition, Cristina Radio is developing several programs that will cover political issues, current events and lifestyle choices.

“I’m thrilled about launching Cristina Radio on SiriusXM.  I look forward to creating programming that will entertain, inform and uplift.  As for my weekly one-hour live broadcast, Cristina Entre Amigos, I’m excited to be able to talk with listeners about the issues that affect us all in what I hope will be a fun and informative manner,” said Cristina Saralegui, whose ground-breaking program, El Show de Cristina still remains the most successful Spanish-language talk show in television history.

Cristina Radio will officially go on the air Thursday, January 12, 2012.
