First Look Trailer Released for Nathaly Garcia’s New Film “Gasoline Rainbow”

Nathaly Garcia is gassed up for her latest project…

The first trailer for Gasoline Rainbow, starring the Latina actress, has been released.

Gasoline RainbowThe first narrative feature from the acclaimed indie duo of Bill Ross IV and Turner Ross, which is soon to have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, is set to hit U.S. theaters via Mubi next year.

Gasoline Rainbow is a formally experimental work that’s reminiscent of Andrea Arnold’s Cannes Film Festival prize winner American Honey.

Written, produced, shot and directed by the Ross Brothers, it follows five teenagers from small-town Oregon who, with high school in the rearview, decide to embark on one last adventure. Piling into a van with a busted taillight, their mission is to make it to a place they’ve never been — the Pacific coast, five hundred miles away. Their plan, in full: “F**k it.”

By van, boat, train, and foot, their improvised odyssey takes them through desert wilderness, industrial backwaters, and city streets. Along the way, they encounter outsiders from the fringes of the American West and discover that the contours of their lives will be set by trails they blaze themselves. They are forgotten kids from a forgotten town, but they have their freedom and they have each other, hurtling toward an unknowable future — and The Party at the End of the World.

Starring Garcia and fellow newcomers Tony Abuerto, Micah Bunch, Nichole Dukes and Makai Garza, the film began percolating for the Rosses during Covid lockdown. Said the visionaries behind it in a statement setting up the clip, “This scene almost didn’t happen – chasing the sunset after a brutally long day of filming in the van, the sky went electric with color. Racing towards a vantage point, the kids jumped out of the van and ran into the open. We’d found ourselves on the exact same stretch of lonesome road that begins and ends My Own Private Idaho. It was magical. They stayed and pontificated until the light was gone, and then we left. One brief moment along the line.”

Added the duo with regard to their forthcoming premiere, “Venice is a new frontier for us, and we’re thrilled to make it our point of embarkation.”

Produced by the Department of Motion Pictures and Mubi, in association with XTRGasoline Rainbow is having international sales handled by The Match Factory.

Vergil Ortiz Jr. Cleared to Fight Eimantas Stanionis in July

Vergil Ortiz Jr. is cleared to fight…

The 25-year-old Mexican-American boxer will return on July 8 to fight Eimantas Stanionis now that he’s recovered from rhabdomyolysis and discovered it was caused by long COVID.

Vergil Ortiz Jr.The 147-pound contest — Ortiz’s fourth consecutive in his native Texas — pits top-10 welterweights with plenty of power (Ortiz is No. 3 in ESPN’s rankings; Stanionis is No. 6.)

The fight has already been postponed twice. It was set for March 18 before Stanionis, 28, underwent an emergency appendectomy in January in Lithuania. A second postponement came when Ortiz, 25, dealt with a recurrence of rhabdomyolysis, pushing the fight from its April 29 date.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, rhabdomyolysis occurs when damaged muscle tissue releases its proteins and electrolytes into the blood. These substances can damage the heart and kidneys and cause permanent disability or even death.

Ortiz (19-0, 19 KOs) said he was fully cleared last month after being treated by Dr. Juan Bautista in Fresno, California, who diagnosed him with long COVID following a battery of tests.

“I actually had a hunch that that’s what it was, but I didn’t know too much about it — I’m not a doctor,” Ortiz said. ” … I’ve never felt this good in a good maybe three or four years. … I’m still training hard … that was never the problem. … I’m noticing that I’m not huffing and puffing and I just feel great overall. … I can’t explain how good I feel compared to how I was.”

Ortiz, who received two shots of the Moderna vaccine, said he first contracted COVID during training camp for his July 2020 fight with Samuel Vargas, whom he knocked out in Round 6.

“I could not breathe,” Ortiz said. “I was struggling to keep my composure during that interview right after the fight, man. But I could not breathe at all, and it just kept getting worse after that fight.”

He was sick with COVID again ahead of his next outing, a seventh-round KO of Maurice Hooker in March 2021. After the fight, Ortiz’s father and trainer, Vergil Ortiz Sr., said his son’s skin turned red.

“I wanted to call [the fight] off, and he didn’t want to call it off,” Ortiz Sr. said. “He pretty much begged with me, and he promised me that he would beat this guy and not to call it off. So, what do you tell your boy who’s training through COVID and looking drunk and dizzy because he’s so sick. … I could see it in his body and his muscles … it was attacking his muscles.”

Ortiz contracted COVID a third time afterward, and in March 2022, was forced to withdraw from a fight vs. Michael McKinson after he was hospitalized with rhabdomyolysis.

Ortiz went on to score a ninth-round TKO of McKinson in August and hasn’t competed since. During that time away from the ring, Ortiz heard the claims on social media that his condition was because he overtrained or simply couldn’t make 147 pounds anymore.

“It can be mentally draining sometimes, I’m not going to lie,” Ortiz said. “It’s very frustrating sometimes … when they’re speaking on something that they don’t know, but I mean, that’s just how life is. And luckily, I try to keep a positive mentality and just try to ignore all the buzz and noise outside and just focus on myself.”

Ortiz Sr. said it was difficult to know it was COVID because his son was nearly lapping the other fighters on their 5-mile runs. “He’s so used to pushing through it,” Ortiz Sr. said.

Rafael Nadal Defeats Maxime Cressy for Melbourne Crown in Return to Competitive Play After Nagging Foot Injury

Make that 19 in a row for Rafael Nadal

The 35-year-old Spanish tennis star defeated American Maxime Cressy, 7-6 (6), 6-3 at the Melbourne Summer Set 1 on Sunday in one of six tournaments this week ahead of the Australian Open, which begins January 17.

Rafael Nadal

In the process, Nadal has added another title to his illustrious career, capturing at least one ATP title for the 19th consecutive year.

“Very happy to start the season with a title … and from where we are coming, it’s very special,” said Nadal. “Tonight I think I played my best match so far since I arrived here, without a doubt, against a very difficult player.”

It was Nadal’s successful return to competition from a niggling foot injury that had kept him out for nearly four months.

It’s Nadal’s 89th career title.

Nadal saved a set point in the first-set tie-break and fought back from a break down in the second set, before closing out the match in one hour, 44 minutes.

Nadal participated in an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi last month but tested positive for COVID-19 on his return, further affecting his preparation for the Australian Open where he’s aiming for his second title — and first since 2009.

“If we put everything together and analyze all the things that I went through the last five months, including the COVID after Abu Dhabi, of course I am happy,” he added.

“Of course there have been still doubts, but even more doubts during a lot of months, if I will be able to be back.”

But Nadal insisted there was still much to be done as he looks to regain match sharpness and add to his tally of 20 majors, a record he currently shares with Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

“Well, exactly where I would like to be is being 100 percent healthy … playing until the end of the season and without coming back after five, six months outside of the competition … I have a lot of things to keep improving … and I’m going to try hard.”

Record Store Day 2021 to Include Vinyl Release of Celia Cruz & Willie Colón’s “Celia Y Willie”

Celia Cruz’s lasting presence will be felt over the summer…

Record Store Day 2021 is planning two-day “drops” on June 12 and July 17 of exclusive titles, including music by the late Cuban singer.

Celia Cruz x Willie Colon, Celia y Willie

Craft Recordings has announced 12 exclusive vinyl releases for RSD, including a 40th-anniversary reissue of Celia Cruz and Willie Colón’s Celia Y Willie.

RSD typically occurs on a Saturday in the spring at various independent record stores, drawing customers with the promise of unique and limited-edition albums released exclusively to indie stores for the holiday.

But the festivities can’t quite bounce back to the way things were with the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. With small businesses slowly opening back up, the RSD website has created an organized list of 450 titles — 50 more than usual — for music lovers to use as a shopping guide at select indie music retailers. Stores will allow for in-store shopping with either normal/reduced foot traffic or by appointment, curbside pickup, local delivery and/or online shopping depending on the location, which can be checked here.

RSD’s first releases include Lady Gaga‘s Chromatica on exclusive yellow vinyl; Amy Winehouse‘s Remixes as its own LP collection for the first time; Prince‘s The Truth as a first-time LP release and first-time independent release on purple vinyl; Tom Petty‘s Angel Dream reimagined on LP for the 25th anniversary of the She’s The One soundtrack; and Ariana Grande‘s k bye for now (swt live) on double-CD and as a triple-LP. This marks the first time the live-album component of Grande’s 2019 Sweetener Tour is being released in physical form after the pop star released the LP digitally on December 23, 2019.

Spreading RSD over two days in two different months in

the summer gives vinyl pressing plants and distribution companies ample time to produce the titles and provides indie stores more flexibility to prepare budgets and place orders so customers can shop for the records they’re looking for on both days as opposed to one massive release day.

RSD organizers were forced to postpone its 2020 edition due to COVID. Last year’s three-part drop (staged on August 29, September 26 and October 24) helped generate 1.95 million in CD and vinyl album sales at indie stores in the U.S. — with 1.41 million of that in vinyl album sales, according to MRC Data.

Maluma Releases Surprise New Conceptual & Visual Project “7 Días en Jamaica”

Maluma is celebrating island life

The 27-year-old Colombian singer, known as Papi Juancho, has released 7 Días en Jamaica, a conceptual and visual project that follows the singer during seven days in Jamaica.

Maluma

Laced with dancehall and afrobeat and featuring his signature reggaetón style, the tracks — which kick off with “Tónika” featuring Ziggy Marley, son of Bob Marley — Maluma, who turned 27 on Thursday, takes listeners into a journey through the Caribbean country.

Taking to Instagram Live minutes before the album-film’s release, Maluma addressed a viral Instagram post where he posed with someone’s belly making fans believe he was expecting a baby. Turns out, it’s actually his new album!

“Yes, I’m going to be a dad! And the baby is born in 30 minutes,” he said with a laugh. “It’s my sixth child… For the people who thought I was going to be a dad. This is my new baby, 7 Días En Jamaica,” he said in Spanish on Instagram Live ahead of the album’s release. “This is a project that I’ve been working on for a long time.”

“When I was in Jamaica, I had the opportunity to be there with producers and composers for an album that was set to release before Papi Juancho,” he added. “We had it ready, but because of COVID we couldn’t make the videos so we released Papi Juancho first, but we had all the music ready.”

The stunning film follows Maluma as he explores different aspects of Jamaican culture and gets together with a gorgeous love interest he met on the island. He also plays soccer with some children on a dirt field during “Desayun-Arte.”

Seniesa Estrada Scores One of the Fastest Knockouts in Boxing History

Seniesa Estrada is celebrating a record-setting win…

The 28-year-old Mexican American boxer, an unbeaten junior flyweight, needed just seven seconds to finish off an overmatched Miranda Adkins as part of the DAZN card on Friday night at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California.

Seniesa Estrada

As the opening bell rang, Estrada (19-0, 8 KOs) stunned Adkins immediately with a three-punch combination, then followed with a four-punch salvo, punctuated by a left hook that sent Adkins to the canvas.

In doing so, Estrada scored the fastest knockout in women’s boxing history.

“It was the outcome I expected,” Estrada said. “I give her respect for stepping into the ring with me while having a 5-0 record. If it weren’t for her, I probably wouldn’t have had an opponent tonight, so I thank her.

“Hopefully, next time I can fight someone who is a world champion.”

Adkins (5-1, 5 KOs), a late replacement for Jacky Calvo after Calvo suffered a knee injury, came into Friday’s fight undefeated. But four of Adkins’ wins came against opponents making their pro debut, and the other came against a foe who was winless in two fights.

“I give Adkins so much credit because she stood up and took the fight,” Estrada said. “Due to the COVID situation, we tried to get current champions, former champions, and Miranda was the only one who stepped in to take the fight. I had more experience than her in the professionals and amateurs, so I let my punches go and couldn’t stop. I knew the outcome would be a knockout, for sure, but didn’t know how long it would take.

“I want all the champions; I’m ready for it. At 105 pounds, 108 pounds or 112 pounds. I want Anabel Ortiz, who has the WBA title at 105, and Yesenia Gomez, who has the WBC title at 108. I want a world champion fight. Marlen Esparza, l will give her the rematch. Let’s go!”

According to Guinness World Records, the fastest knockout in boxing history was in a Golden Gloves tournament in Minneapolis on November 4, 1947, when Mike Collins knocked out Pat Brownson in four seconds.
