Monica Raymund to Star in Dick Wolf’s Scripted Podcast Drama Series “Dark Woods”

It’s a dark time for Monica Raymund.

The 35-year-old half-Dominican American actress and Hightown star will star opposite Corey Stoll and Reid Scott in Dark Woods, a scripted podcast drama series from Dick Wolf’s Wolf Entertainment.

Monica Raymund

The thriller centers around the suspicious death of a young park volunteer in the California Redwood Forest.

It’s the Law & Order creator’s second foray into the world of scripted podcasts after the launch of Hunted, starring Parker Posey and Brandon Scott, in 2019.

It brings together two actors from the wider Wolf world; Stoll played Detective Tomas Jaruszalski in Law & Order: LA, while Raymund starred as Gabriela Dawson Casey in Chicago Fire.

The series, which launches on November 8, begins when the body of a young volunteer is discovered in the middle of the California redwoods. It brings together two estranged ex-spouses, a stubborn game warden and a charismatic councilwoman, who must put their personal differences aside to learn the terrifying truth about what is happening in their state park. The investigation leads to a surprising twist impacted by illegal marijuana grow sites and a much larger crime organization.

Written by David Pergolini and directed by Takashi Doscher, it is executive-produced by Dick Wolf and Elliot Wolf. The series is produced by Wolf Entertainment and Endeavor Content in association with Waverunner Studios.

The series was recorded remotely with Raymund recording during breaks from Starz’ Hightown, Stoll was in New York and Scott was in LA.

Wolf (right) added that the sound design was key to the audio drama, the idea of creating traditional scenes that would be strong enough to follow along without a visual.

“The goal was to make this as an immersive experience as possible and to make it feel as real life as possible. The actual sound design is largely recorded sounds in the forest. When you hear a coffee mug being picked up, it’s an actual coffee mug,” he said.

The clip opens with Isaac’s co-star Jessica Chastain climbing into bed, with body language telling a story. Before she can speak, he asks, “What is it?”

The series, which will premiere on Sunday, September 12, is adapted from Ingmar Bergman’s 1973 Swedish miniseries. It re-examines its iconic depiction of love, hatred, desire, monogamy, marriage and divorce through the lens of a contemporary American couple.

The five-part Scenes from a Marriage addresses the complexity of Jonathan and Mira as individuals who ultimately know their marriage isn’t being ripped apart by any one event or flaw.

Viewers will eavesdrop on private conversations between two people torn between feelings of hate and love.

“You just believe that, as a couple, nothing can hurt you,” we hear Mira say. “And then you gradually start to realize that actually, anything can hurt you.”

The limited series from Media Res and Endeavor Content reunites Chastain and Isaac, who were classmates at Julliard, are longtime friends and starred together in 2014’s A Most Violent Year.

FX Renews del Toro’s “The Strain,” Starring Mia Maestro, for Third Season

Guillermo del Toro will be strained for another year…

FX has picked up the 50-year-old Mexican filmmaker and producer’s horror drama The Strain for a third season.

The Strain

The announcement comes only four weeks into the show’s sophomore season.

A breakout hit when it launched last summer, The Strain has been down in the ratings in Season 2 but continues to be strong in the adults 18-49 demo and delivers solid DVR gains each week. The second episode posted 2.6 million viewers in Live+3 and 1.5 million adults 18-49.

The thriller, from del Toro and Carlton Cuse, is based on the best-selling The Strain Trilogy by del Toro and Chuck Hogan.

“Guillermo and Carlton have delivered two thrilling seasons of The Strain that are captivating and visually arresting, doing justice to the original novel trilogy and meeting fans’ high expectations in the process,” said FX’s Eric Schrier.

In the current second season, New York City is rapidly falling to an evil epidemic, and no one is coming to its rescue. Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll) and his unlikely allies tried to take down the embodiment of this evil — the Master — and failed. Now Eph and Dr. Nora Martinez (Mia Maestro) are concentrating on creating a biological weapon to wipe out the creatures, while Abraham Setrakian (David Bradley) searches for an ancient book he hopes will reveal the strigoi’s entire history…and possibly a way to kill them.

The third season of The Strain will air next summer.
