“Emilia Perez” Star Karla Sofía Gascón Earns Historic Academy Awards Nomination

Karla Sofía Gascón has made Academy Awards history….

The 2025 Oscar nominations have been announced, with the 52-year-old Spanish actress  earning a nod, making her the first openly trans person ever to be nominated in an acting category.

Karla Sofía GascónGascón is recognized in the Best Actress category for her leading role in Jacques Audiard’s musical Netflix film, Emilia Pérez. Her nomination comes on the heels of recent Golden Globe, SAG Awards and BAFTA Film Awards nominations for Gascón’s breakthrough performance.

In Emilia Pérez, Gascón stars as a cartel leader who turns to Mexico City lawyer Rita (Zoë Saldaña), to help her live as her authentic self. Selena Gomez stars as Emilia’s wife Jessi and Adriana Paz as Emilia’s girlfriend Epifanía.

Gascón first made awards history with the role at the Cannes Film Festival when all four actresses shared the Best Actress award, with Gascón being the first openly trans actress ever to win the prize.

In October, Gascón discussed her feelings around representation with Deadline, saying, “I represent, obviously, the minority that I represent. But I think that I represent a lot of people in this world that want, or need, to be free. I’m talking about my colleagues, other actors that are coming up, that started from the bottom and have been working for a long time and have felt that rejection and continue to work and continue to learn and continue to grow. I think that’s maybe one of the very important groups of people that I represent. And I hope that I represent hope for my colleagues.”

Gascón’s co-star, Saldaña, has earned her first-ever Oscars nomination.

The 46-year-old Puerto Rican and Dominican American actress is nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for portraying Rita in the Netflix film.

Fernanda Torres has earned her first Oscar nod.

The 59-year-old Brazilian screen and stage actress and writer landed a Best Actress nomination this morning for her leading turn in Walter Salles’ latest I’m Still Here.

Torres is only the second Brazilian actress to receive an Oscar nomination. The first was her mother, Fernanda Montenegro, who was nominated in 1999 for Central Station, also directed by Salles.

Monica Barbaro has earned her first-ever Oscar nomination.

Barbaro is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as folk legend Joan Baez in A Complete Unknown.

Colman Domingo is celebrating a second consecutive Best Actor nod.

The 55-year-old Emmy-winning Belizean-Guatemalan American actor and activist, a best actor nominee last year for Rustin, is nominated this year for Sing Sing.

He’s the first person to earn best actor Oscar nominations in back-to-back years since Denzel Washington did so for Fences in 2017 and Roman J. Israel, Esq. in 2018.

Domingo garnered his second Oscar nomination on Thursday after making history last year as the first Afro-Latino to be nominated in the best actor category.

Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang announced this year’s nominees live at 5:30 a.m. PT from the Film Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Walter Salles has two Oscar nominations this year…

Previously nominated in 1999 in the Best International Feature Film category for Central Station, The 68-year-old Brazilian filmmaker and film editor is nominated for Best Picture and Best International Feature Film for helming I’m Still Here.

The 97th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien, will air live coast-to-coast on Sunday, March 2, from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, starting at 4:00 pm PT / 7:00 pm ET, continuing with the earlier start time the show debuted last year, on ABC and Hulu.

Netflix Releases Trailer for Fred Armisen’s “The Mitchells vs. The Machines”

Fred Armisen is ready for a “robot apocalypse”…

Netflix has released the new trailer for The Mitchells vs. The Machines, featuring the 54-year-old half-Venezuelan American actor/comedian.

Fred Armisen

The animated film centers on a quirky, dysfunctional but loving clan’s together time that becomes a battle to save the planet. And if these folks are the last hope for humankind, well maybe the inanimates have the upper metal hand.

When Katie Mitchell (Abbi Jacobson), a creative outsider, is accepted into the film school of her dreams, her plans to meet “her people” at college are upended when her nature-loving dad Rick (Danny McBride) determines the whole family should drive Katie to school together and bond as a family one last time. Maya Rudolph voices the mom, and Michael Rianda is the kid brother.

Directed by Mike Rianda from a script he wrote with Jeff Rowe, the film’s voice cast includes Eric Andre, Armisen, Beck Bennett, Chrissy Teigen, John Legend, Charlyne Yi, Blake Griffin, Conan O’Brien, Sasheer Zamata, Elle Mills, Alex Hirsch, Jay Pharoah, Doug the Pug and Olivia Colman as Pal.

Sony Pictures sold worldwide rights to the animated feature to Netflix in January, after it had bounced around the release calendar during the pandemic.

Netflix will debut it as a streaming-only film on April 30.

Fox Brings Special Trump-Inspired Boots on Conan O’Brien’s “Made in Mexico” Episode of His TBS Late-Night Show

Vicente Fox is giving Donald Trump the boot…

One year after the 74-year-old former president of Mexico told the then-presidential candidate, in an interview with Fusion’s Jorge Ramos, “I’m not going to pay for that f*cking wall,” Fox taped another such message to Trump via Conan O’Brien’s upcoming “Made in Mexico” episode of his TBS late-night show.

Vicente Fox & Conan O'Brien

In January, the always-on-point Fox tweeted to Trump, “When will you understand that I am not paying for that f*cken wall. Be clear with US taxpayers. They will pay for it.”

And, to make sure his position was perfectly clear, Fox also presented O’Brien with a pair of boots on which were decorated the words “No F*cking Wall.”

Turning to the camera, Fox told Trump, “Don’t mess around with us … because if you look for it, you’re going to find it.”

“President Fox, I appreciate that you keep talking to Trump, but I think he switched channels very early in this program,” the host quipped.

In a previously released clip of Wednesday night’s “Conan Without Borders: Made in Mexico” special, O’Brien held a Border Wall Pledge Drive to collect cash to build the wall.

O’Brien announced in January that he was heading back to the eye of a political storm for his next road trip. The announcement came just hours after the current president of Mexico cancelled plans to meet with newly sworn in President Trump, after Trump signed an executive order expediting construction of the wall and again insisted Mexico is going to pay for it.

Juanes to Perform at This Year’s Nobel Peace Prize Concert

Juanes is spreading the Peace for a third time…

The 44-year-old Colombian superstar is set to perform at the 23rd annual Nobel Peace Prize concert in Oslo, Norway, on December 11, joining a star-studded lineup including Sting, Halsey and Icona Pop.

Juanes

The event is set to take place at Oslo’s Telenor Arena and will be hosted by Conan O’Brien.

“Advocating that all people have a right to live in peace has long been a cornerstone of my music and the work of our foundation, so I’ve been flattered to participate in past Nobel concerts recognizing global leaders pursuing peace across our world,” Juanes said in a statement. “With this year’s award recognizing the efforts of President Santos to bring a lasting peace to my own nation, I am beyond honored to be asked to perform at the ceremony in Oslo once again this year.”

It’s not the first time Juanes has performed at a Nobel Peace Prize concert: The “Fuego” singer performed in 2005 and 2007 for laureates Mohamed ElBaradei and Al Gore.

“Juanes is an old and dear friend to the Nobel Peace Prize Concert, and we are delighted that he will be back on stage this year,” said Olav Njølstad, director of Norway’s The Nobel Institute. “Besides being a brilliant musician he is devoted to charitable work and a strong supporter of the peace process in his home country Colombia. Together with his fabulous band and dancers Juanes will certainly ignite the audience and inject a lot of positive energy into the concert.”

This year’s honorees include Colombia’s president Juan Manuel Santos and Bob Dylan — who became the first musician to earn the Nobel Prize in literature.

Louis C.K. wrote and directed the black and white 16mm dark comedy, about a photo shop owner obsessed with ice cream, and took it to festivals back in 1998.

Louis C.K. has made Tomorrow Night available for download for $5. Louis C.K. recently hit the promo circuit and stopped by The Daily Show with friend Jon Stewart, who lent Louis C.K. money to make the movie years ago as did Chris Rock, Denis Leary, Spike Feresten and Brett Butler.

He also notably put out his 2011 comedy special Live at the Beacon Theater on his own website for $5 a pop, trusting fans not to pirate it, and took in $1M with the self-release strategy.
