Jacob Elordi Earns Career-First BAFTA Film Awards Nod for “Saltburn” Performance

Jacob Elordi has another chance to win at this year’s BAFTAs.

The 26-year-old half-Spanish Australian actor and Saltburn star, a previously revealed nominee for the BAFTA Film Rising Star Award, has earned his first-ever BAFTA nomination from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

Jacob Elordi,Elordi earned the nod in the Supporting Actor category for his work in Saltburn.

But he isn’t the only Latinx actor to earn a first BAFTA nod.

Colman Domingo is nominated in the Leading Actor category.

The 54-year-old Belizean-Guatemalan American actor is nominated for his performance in Netflix’s Rustin.

Rodrigo Prieto is nominated in the Cinematography category.

The 58-year-old Mexican cinematographer, previously nominated three times for a BAFTA, earned this year’s nod for his work on Killers of the Flower Moon.

J.A. Bayona, the Spanish filmmaker, is nominated in the Film Not in the English Language category for directing Society of the Snow. It’s his first BAFTA nod.

Winners will be announced at the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards ceremony, hosted by actor David Tennant on February 18 at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London.

Colman Domingo A Double-Winner at the AARP Movies for Grownups Awards

Colman Domingo is the beau of the retired community…

The winners of the AARP Movies for Grownups Awards have been announced, with the 54-year-old Belizean-Guatemalan American actor taking home two awards.

Colman DomingoDomingo was named Best Actor for his performance as Bayard Rustin in Netflix’s Rustin.

Rustin served as an advisor to Martin Luther King Jr. and dedicated his life to the quest for racial equality, human rights and worldwide democracy. However, as an openly gay Black man, he has been all but erased from the civil rights movement he helped build.

Additionally, Domingo and his The Color Purple cast mates took home the award for Best Ensemble.

AARP’s awards spotlight films and television content that feature crucial issues, thoughtful storylines and top performances that speak directly to the 50-plus audience.

“It’s been a good year for shows and movies by and for people over 50,” said AARP TV and film critic Tim Appelo. “Grownup talent and stories are being recognized across the board, and ageism in Hollywood does seem to be gradually eroding, with help from AARP. In 2000, shortly before the Movies for Grownups Awards began, only one of the top 10 box office stars was over 50; today, half are.”

Colman Domingo Wins Two African American Film Critics Awards

Colman Domingo is a double winner…

The winners of the 15th annual African American Film Critics Awards have been revealed, with the 54-year-old Belizean-Guatemalan American actor taking home two awards.

Colman DomingoDomingo picked up the Best Actor award for portraying Bayard Rustin, an openly gay Black man who served as an advisor to Martin Luther King Jr., in Netflix’s Rustin.

Meanwhile, Domingo and his The Color Purple cast mates won the Best Ensemble award. He portrays Albert “Mister” Johnson, the main antagonist in the coming-of-age musical period drama directed by Blitz Bazawule.

The AAFCA winners were announced alongside the organization’s list of the year’s ten best films. The list was topped by American Fiction, with spots for Oppenheimer, Past Lives, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Poor Things and Anatomy of a Fall.

The winners will be honored at the 15th Annual AAFCA Awards on February 21 at the Beverly Wilshire.

Colman Domingo to Serve as Presenter at Primetime Emmy Awards

Colman Domingo is headed to the Emmys…

The 54-year-old Belizean-Guatemalan American actor, who won an Emmy for his guest performance on HBO’s Euphoria, will serve as a presenter at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday, January 15.

Domingo joins a roster of presenters that includes Peter Dinklage, Tom Hiddleston, Ke Huy and Tracee Ellis Ross.

Charlie Puth and acclaimed duo The War and Treaty will perform over the In Memoriam spot, while Travis Barker will team with show host Anthony Anderson for what the show promises will be “a show-stopping open.”

The show will also include cast reunions and tributes to hit TV series spanning more than seven decades, including The Sopranos, Martin, Cheers, Grey’s Anatomy, All in the Family, Ally McBeal and I Love Lucy as well as Saturday Night Live’s signature Weekend Update segment, which will be helmed by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

The 75th Emmy Awards, executive-produced by Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay of Jesse Collins Entertainment, will broadcast live from the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles on Monday, January 15 (8:00-11:00 p.m. ET/5:00-8:00 p.m. PT) on FOX and will also be available the next day on Hulu.

For the third consecutive year, the 31-year-old Mexican American actress/singer has been nominated for a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Selena GomezGomez is nominated once again for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series for her role in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, but the Golden Globe nominee was passed over for a nod for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in aComedy Series.

Colman Domingo has earned two SAG Award nods.

The 54-year-old Belizean-Guatemalan American actor is nominated in the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in Netflix’s Rustin.

Domingo is also nominated alongside his The Color Purple cast mates in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. He previously earned a nod in the same category back in 2020 for his being part of the cast of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

John Ortiz has earned his first-ever SAG Awards nomination.

The 55-year-old Puerto Rican actor and his American Fiction cast mates are up for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

America Ferrera is thrilled pink with her latest SAG Awards nod.

The 39-year-old Honduran American actress, already a SAG Award winner, is nominated alongside Ariana Greenblatt and their Barbie cast mates in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Penelope Cruz is nominated in the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role category.

The 49-year-old Spanish Oscar-winning actress is nominated in the category for her performance in Ferrari.

Pedro Pascal is a two-time nominee…

Previously nominated as part of the cast of HBO’s Game of Thrones, the 48-year-old Chilean actor is nominated in the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series and Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series for her performance in HBO’sThe Last of Us.

Nestor Carbonell is nominated in the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series category alongside his The Morning Show cast mates; Jose Cervantes Jr., Liza Colón-Zayas and their The Bear cast mates are nominated in the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series category; and Cristo Fernández and his Ted Lasso cast mates are nominated in the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series

Comedy and drama performances are combined in the SAG film awards, but are handled separately in their television awards.

On the film side, the largest ensemble among the nominees is The Color Purple, with 12 actors including such music stars as Halle Bailey, Fantasia Barrino, Jon Batiste, Ciara and H.E.R.

The 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, produced by SAG-AFTRA and Silent House Productions, will stream live on Netflix on Saturday, February24, at 8:00 pm ET/5:00 pm PT from the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles. This will mark the show’s live debut on Netflix. Last year’s ceremony was broadcast on Netflix’s YouTube page.

The awards are voted on by SAG-AFTRA’s membership of 119,515 eligible voters, the largest voting body on the awards circuit. Final voting opens on Wednesday, January 17, and closes at noon PT on Friday, February 23.

Barbra Streisand will receive the 2024 SAG Lifetime Achievement Award. She is the 59th recipient of the tribute; she follows Sally Field, who received it during the 2023 telecast.

Colman Domingo is celebrating an Astra-nomical win…

The 2024 Astra Film Awards winners have been announced, with the 54-year-old Belizean-Guatemalan American actor among the honorees.

Domingo and his The Color Purple cast members claimed the Best Cast Ensemble prize.

Domingo portrays Albert “Mister” Johnson in the musical/drama that also stars Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks and Taraji P. Henson.

The ASTRA Film Awards, presented by the Hollywood Creative Alliance, were held on Saturday (Jan. 6) at the Biltmore Los Angeles and hosted by comedian Rick Glassman. The ceremony was live-streamed on KNEKTtv and the HCA YouTube channel.

“The Color Purple,” Starring Colman Domingo, Tops Box Office on Christmas Day

It’s a Purple reign for Colman Domingo this Christmas…

The Color Purple, a vibrant adaptation of the book-turned-beloved-film-turned-hit-Broadway-musical and starring the 54-year-old Belizean-Guatemalan American actor and social justice activist, dominated at the box office on Christmas Day.

Colman Domingo,The film has outperformed expectations with $18 million from 3,152 North American theaters. It’s the largest Christmas Day opening for a film since 2009, and the second-biggest Christmas Day opening of all time.

Those ticket sales were enough to lead the way on Monday ahead of two other newcomers, Neon’s racing drama Ferrari and director George Clooney’s inspirational sports story The Boys in the Boat.

Boosted by positive reviews and a glowing “A” CinemaScore, The Color Purple marks the first musical in some time that’s resonated at the box office. The film, backed by Warner Bros. and directed by Blitz Bazawule, collected more in a single day than recent stage-to-screen stories — including West Side Story ($10.5 million), In the Heights ($11 million), Dear Evan Hansen ($7.5 million) and Cats ($6.6 million) — earned in their opening weekends.

The Color Purple benefitted by premiering on Christmas Day, one of the most popular days of the year for moviegoing. But this is a promising start for the $100 million-budgeted musical, which should benefit from word of mouth in the coming days.

“The Color Purple” looks to remain the de facto choice for families over the remainder of what has otherwise been a lackluster holiday season. American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino brings to life the trials, tribulations and triumphs of Celie, a Black woman living in Georgia in the early 1900s. Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Domingo as  Albert “Mister” Johnson, and Halle Bailey round out the cast.

Colman Domingo to Receive London Critics’ Circle’s Derek Malcolm Award for Innovation

Colman Domingo is the critics’ choice for a special recognition…

The 54-year-old Belizean-Guatemalan American actor and social justice activist will receive the first-ever Derek Malcolm Award for Innovation from the United Kingdom’s leading film critics.

Colman DomingoThe award is named after the legendary critic and film historian who died in August at the age of 91. Named in his honor, the award will be part of the 44th London Critics’ Circle Awards that take place on February 4, 2024.

Domingo is being recognized for his work as an actor, producer, writer, and director in a career that spans film, television and theater.

He won an Emmy for his role in Euphoria and received a Tony nomination as a producer of Fat Ham, a retelling of Hamlet. In film, his recent credits include The Color Purple and Rustin and other work includes appearances in Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk, Lee Daniels’ The Butler and Ava DuVernay’s Selma.

“It’s an honor to receive the inaugural Derek Malcolm Award for Innovation and to be recognized in this way by the London Film Critics’ Circle, a group of journalists I deeply respect,” Domingo said. “This has been an incredible year for film, and having the opportunity to play Bayard Rustin, a man who embodied the word ‘trailblazer’, has been a great privilege.”

Malcolm was a long-standing member of the Critics’ Circle, serving a term as its president. He was variously chief critic for British newspapers The Guardian and The Evening Standard and hosted The Film Club on the BBC, as well as publishing several books. He was also a former director of London Film Festival and governor of the British Film Institute.

America Ferrera Earns Two Critics Choice Awards Nominations for “Barbie” Performance

America Ferrera has earned a shout out from the Critics Choice Association.

The nominations have been announced for the 29th annual Critics Choice Awards, with the 49-year-old Honduran American Emmy-, Golden Globe– and SAG Award-winning actress earning two nods.

America Ferrera, BarbieFerrera is nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her scene-stealing role in Mattel’s Barbie, as well as a nominee in the Best Acting Ensemble category for being part of the cast of the film.

Colman Domingo is also a two-time nominee this year…

The 54-year-old Belizean-Guatemalan American actor is nominated for Best Actor for his lead performance in Netflix’s Rustin. He’s also up for Best Acting Ensemble for forming part of the cast of The Color Purple.

Rodrigo Prieto will compete against himself in Best Cinematography category.

The 58-year-old Mexican cinematographer is nominated for lensing Barbie and Killers of the Flower Moon.

J.A. Bayona is nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

The 48-year-old Spanish filmmaker earned the nod for directing the Spanish-language film Society of the Snow.

“We are so excited to celebrate this year’s remarkable projects, performances, and the people who made it all possible at the 29th Annual Critics Choice Awards,” said CCA CEO Joey Berlin. “This year saw an incredible number of blockbuster hits and beautiful stories brought to life in these exceptional films.”

The 29th annual Critics Choice Awards will air live on Sunday January 14, 2024 on The CW from 7:00 – 10:00 pm ET (delayed PT, check local listings). Chelsea Handler will return for the second consecutive year as host for the awards which are bestowed annually to honor the finest in cinematic and television achievement.

New Trailer Released for “The Color Purple,” Starring Colman Domingo

Colman Domingo is under a purple haze…

Warner Bros. has released a new look at its upcoming Broadway musical adaptation of The Color People, starring the 54-year-old Belizean-Guatemalan American actor and social justice activist.

Colman DomingoIn addition to Domingo, who portrays Albert “Mister” Johnson, the musical film also stars Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks, Taraji P. Henson, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.

Directed by Blitz Bazawule, the film will open in theaters on December 25. Marcus Gardley, Alice Walker and Marsha Norman penned the screenplay.

The film is based on the Tony-winning musical from Norman, Brenda Lee, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, which was based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Alice Walker. It comes on the heels of a classic 1985 film adaptation from director Steven Spielberg and centers on Celie, a Black Southern woman who struggles to find her identity after suffering abuse from her father and others over the course of forty years.

The original Broadway musical debuted in 2005, scoring 11 Tony Award nominations in 2006 and Best Performance by an actress in a leading role for award for LaChanze in her role as Celie. The 2015 revival garnered four more Tony nominations and won for Best Revival of a Musical for Cynthia Erivo in her Broadway debut. The musical has also won Grammy and Emmy awards.

Spielberg directed and produced the 1985 adaptation of the Alice Walker novel, which received 11-time Oscar-nominations. The film scored Oprah Winfrey a Supporting Actress Oscar nomination, and Leading Actress Oscar nomination and Golden Globe Award for Whoopi Goldberg.

The Color Purple (2023) producers include Spielberg, Winfrey, Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones with executive producers Walker and Rebecca Walker.
