Alejandro Fernandez Donates Portion of Hecho en Mexico Tour Proceeds to Help Immigrant Families Separated at U.S.-Mexico Border

Alejandro Fernandez is helping keep families together…

The 50-year-old Mexican singer has wrapped up the U.S. leg of his Hecho en Mexico tour, which served as a fundraiser for Families Belong Together.

Alejandro Fernandez,

In all, Fernandez donated over $100,000 from the tour proceeds to assist immigrant families separated at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“The impact of my concerts goes beyond the money, the box office, and the sold-out shows,” he explains. “I have always been a very sensitive person to things that happen, especially if it happens in my country. The important thing is to be able to start something and for people to come together, to educate and invite them to support these causes. I see it as giving my audience a little bit of what they have given me.”

On tour, Fernandez was joined by 25 people on stage, including his full band, his Mexican mariachi, special guests Christian Nodal and his son, Alex Fernández, as well as a handful of guests in different cities.

“History repeated itself,” Fernandez, who on many occasions shared the stage with his famed father Vicente Fernandez, expresses. “In fact, Alex was so reserved that I did not contemplate, nor did I know that he wanted to dedicate himself to a musical career. This was the first time we sang together on tour and it gave me a sense of nostalgia, family, and tradition.”

Hecho en México is also the name of his latest studio album, which made him the first act to achieve No. 1s on Billboard Top Latin Albums in the 1990s, ’00s, ’10s, and ’20s, starting with his first chart entry and 12-week ruler Me Estoy Enamorando in 1997.

Up next, the tour continues to Mexico with shows at Mexico City’s Auditorio Nacional, the Telmex Theater in Guadalajara, and the Pa’l Norte Festival in Monterrey, before moving on to Central and South America and Spain in 2022.

“That is what we have now, while we wait for the health protocols to be finalized in each country,” he assures. “Hopefully this nightmare ends soon and we can live a normal reality around the world.”

Fernandez originally kicked off his 2021 Hecho en Mexico U.S. tour on September 10 at the Grand Sierra Theatre in Reno, Nevada. The 21-date tour, presented by Live Nation, wrapped up on October 24 at the Arizona Federal Theatre in Phoenix.

“It was one of the most important tours I have ever had in my career here in the United States,” Fernandez tells Billboard of the gratifying experience.

Gerardo Ortiz Earns 11th No. 1 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Airplay Chart with “Tranquilito”

It’s Lucky No. 11 for Gerardo Ortiz.

The 32-year-old Mexican American singer has earned his 11th No. 1 on Billboard’s Regional Mexican Airplay chart as his single “Tranquilito” rises 4-1 on the October 16-dated survey.

Gerardo OrtizThe single, released February 21 as part of Ortiz’s Décimo Aniversario set, pushes to the top of the tally with a 40% increase in audience impressions, to 8 million, earned in the U.S. in the week ending October 10, according to MRC Data.

As the corrido lands atop the 26-year-old chart, Gerardo captures his 11th No. 1, the second-most among soloists behind Christian Nodal’s 12 leaders. (Calibre 50 continues at the helm, among all acts, with 20 total No. 1s.)

Here’s a recap of the solo acts with the most Regional Mexican Airplay No. 1s:

12, Christian Nodal
11, Gerardo Ortiz
8, Marco Antonio Solis
7, Vicente Fernández
4, Alejandro Fernández
4, Joan Sebastian
4, Ulices Chaidez

“Tranquilito” was written by Emmanuel Delgado and Julio Nápoles. It concurrently sets foot in the overall Latin Airplay chart’s top 10 as it races 15-5 in its sixth week and earns Ortiz his 15th top 10 there, the third-most for a regional Mexican solo act. With a 40% boost in audience, it logs the largest percentage increase by a regional Mexican song.

Back on Regional Mexican Airplay, “Tranquilito” follows the two-week champ “Otra Borrachera” (June 2020) from his No. 7-peaking album Más Caro, Que Ayer. Previously, he placed nine other No. 1 titles, including the 12-week leader “Solo Vine a Despedirme” in 2012, the second-longest leading No. 1 for a soloist behind Marco Antonio Solis’ “La Venia Bendita” (13 weeks, 1997).

Alejandro Fernandez Taking Part in Monthlong Mexican Independence Day Celebration in Las Vegas

Alejandro Fernandez is ready to scream with pride…

In celebration of Mexico’s Independence Day, Las Vegas will capture El Grito’s essence with month-long cultural events, a star-studded lineup that includes the 50-year-old Mexican singer, and culinary hotspots, to name a few.

Alejandro Fernandez,

“Only the ‘Entertainment Capital of the World’ can celebrate Mexican Independence Day with some of the biggest names in Latin entertainment,” Fernando Hurtado, senior director of global sales at Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) tells Billboard. “With nearly 40 flights from Mexico to Las Vegas per week, there’s no better place to celebrate El Grito or any other special occasion.”

Live Nation is producing seven of 12 performances taking place in September, including Christian Nodal kicking off his Botella Tras Botella tour with special guest Gera MXGrupo Firme with three back-to-back shows at MGM Grand Garden Arena, and both Marco Antonio Solis and Fernandez with two concerts each.

“The Independence of Mexico is a celebratory event, and Live Nation has been the primary promoter recognizing this special holiday by bringing iconic Latin talent to Las Vegas, which is a destination for international and domestic Hispanic travelers every September,” Emily Simonitsch, SVP of concerts for Live Nation, tells Billboard in a statement.

In regards to the COVID-19 and Delta variant spikes, Simonitsch assures, “Live Nation continues to follow all venue and local government protocols and encourages guests to visit the websites for each venue for the most updated guidelines.”

Edén Muñoz & Manuel Turizo Named Songwriters of the Year at SESAC Latin Music Awards

Edén Muñoz and Manuel Turizo are sharing a special honor…

The 30-year-old Mexican singer, the charismatic lead singer of regional Mexican group Calibre 50, and the 21-year-old Colombian singer/songwriter have both been recognized as Songwriter of the Year at the annual SESAC Latin Music Awards 2021.

Eden Munoz & Manuel Turizo

It’s the first time in awards history that the top award was presented in two categories — Regional Mexican and Pop/Latin Rhythm — and it underscores how both urban and regional Mexican music have taken a front seat in Latin music in the past year.

Muñoz won songwriter of the year in the regional Mexican category for the second time for songs penned both for Calibre 50 (“Barquillero,” “Solo Tú”) and for other groups, including Banda MS (“Cerrando Ciclos”) and Banda Carnaval (“Esta Vez Soy Yo”). All were recognized with SESAC Latina Performance Awards.

Muñoz’s publisher, Dulce María Music, won publisher of the year, Regional Mexican.
