Shakira & Nicky Jam Top List of Billboard Latin Music Awards Finalists

Shakira and Nicky Jam are all tied up…

The 40-year-old Colombian superstar and the 35-year-old Puerto Rican and Dominican American singer-songwriter top the list of finalists for the 2017 Billboard Latin Music Awards with each earning nine nominations.

Shakira & Nicky Jam

Shakira didn’t release an album in 2016. She competes in the social artist of the year category, while “La bicicleta,” her collaboration with Carlos Vives, is up for hot Latin song of the year, hot Latin song of the year, vocal event, and digital song of the year, among others.

In turn, Vives’ six entries are likewise largely driven by “La bicicleta.” Shakira is also up for an award with Chantaje,” featuring Maluma, which competes against herself in the hot Latin song of the year, vocal event category.

Nicky Jam is a finalist largely due to his chart-topping song “Hasta el amanecer,” up for hot Latin song of the year, airplay song of the year, digital song of the year, streaming song of the year and Latin rhythm song of the year. The rapper, whose longtime game plan is to only release one lead single a year — though let’s see if that changes in 2017 — is also a finalist for Latin pop song of the year for “Ya me enteré,” his collaboration with Mexican pop group Reik. Nicky Jam is also up for artist of the year.

They are followed in number of entries by superstar Enrique Iglesias and regional Mexican bands Los Plebes del Rancho de Ariel Camacho and Banda Sinaloense MS De Sergio Lizarraga, with eight entires each; Maluma, Juan Gabriel and J Balvin with seven each; and Wisin joins Carlos Vives with six each.

The awards will air live on April 27 on Telemundo, capping the Billboard Latin Music Conference that takes place April 24-27 at the Ritz Carlton in Miami Beach.

Maluma Takes Top Two Spots on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart

Maluma is celebrating two concurrent hits…

The Colombian singer has become only the sixth act to concurrently hold the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart as “Sin Contrato” soars 7-1 on the February 11-dated chart.

Maluma

At the same time, the singer remains at No. 2 as a featured act on Shakira’s “Chantaje” for a third straight week.

At 23-years-old, he’s the youngest artist to rule the top two spots on the chart, and the first to do so since 2011.

Before Maluma, the youngest artist to conquer the No. 1 and No. 2 spots was Alejandro Fernandez, who at 25 ruled the chart for two straight weeks in January of 1998 with “En El Jardin,” featuring Gloria Estefan, at No. 1, while “Si Tu Supieras” was No. 2.

Selena spent the most weeks holding both top spots. Beginning four months after the Tejano superstar died, she spent six non-consecutive weeks at the top with “Tu Solo Tu” and “I Could Fall In Love,” between July and September in 1995. She would have been 24-years-old.

The most recent artist to achieve the feat was Pitbull on the October 15, 2011-dated list. He crowned the chart with “Rain On Me,” featuring Marc Anthony, while “Give Me Everything,” featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer, held the No. 2 slot.

The other acts to simultaneously hold the top two spots are Juan Luis Guerra and Juanes.

Maluma’s No. 1s on Latin Airplay
Title, peak date (weeks at No. 1)
“Borro Cassette,” Nov. 21, 2015 (three weeks)
“El Perdedor,” featuring Yandel, Aug. 13, 2016 (one week)
“Vente Pa’ Ca” (Ricky Martin featuring Maluma), Oct. 15, 2016 (two weeks)
“Chantaje” (Shakira featuring Maluma), Nov. 19, 2016 (three weeks)
“Sin Contrato,” featuring Fifth Harmony or Don Omar and Wisin, Feb. 11, 2017 (one week, so far)

“Sin Contrato,” which boasts a version featuring Fifth Harmony and one featuring Don Omar and Wisin, as well as Maluma’s original solo version, rises to the top boosted by a 38 percent at the radio format (to 15.1 million audience impressions in the week ending Jan. 29, according to Nielsen Music).

Meanwhile, on the Hot Latin Songs chart (which blends airplay, sales and streams), “Sin Contrato” earns a new peak hopping 13-7, reaching the top 10 for the first time in its 22nd charting frame. In addition to the on-air increase, 1.4 million U.S. streams (down 1 percent, in the week ending Jan. 26) also support the climb, which marks the singer’s fifth top 10.

Elsewhere on the charts, Maluma vaults 25-5 on Top Latin Albums with Pretty Boy Dirty Boy, with 2,000 equivalent album units earned, during the chart’s first week as a consumption based ranking. The updated chart switched to a multi-metric methodology, blending pure album sales, track equivalent album (TEA) units, and streaming equivalent album (SEA) units. Under the previous album-sales-only formula, the set debuted at No. 1 on the Nov. 21, 2015 chart. The jump marks the first time that the set returns to the top five since its arrival.

Finally, Maluma also lifts 14-10 on the Social 50 chart, which is powered by data tracked by music analytics company Next Big Sound, and ranks the most popular artists on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Wikipedia, and Tumblr. He previously peaked at No. 7 on the December 24 ranking.

Shakira’s “Chantaje,” feat. Maluma, Matches the Run of “Hips Don’t Lie” on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs Chart

Shakira is still blackmailing her way to the top of the charts…

The 39-year-old Colombian superstar rules the roost on Billboard‘s Hot Latin Songs chart (dated January 21) for an eighth (nonconsecutive) week with “Chantaje,” featuring Maluma, matching the amount of weeks she spent atop the chart with her 2006 smash “Hips Don’t Lie,” featuring Wyclef Jean.

Shakira

Both tracks are now tied for her second-longest command of the chart; the Colombian star’s “La Tortura,” featuring Alejandro Sanz, spent 25 weeks at the top beginning in June 2005.

Meanwhile, “Chantaje,” which translates to blackmail in English, jumps 65-51 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, reaching a new peak in its eighth charting week. Apart from “Tortura,” which peaked at No. 23, “Chantaje” marks Shakira’s best Hot 100 showing for a Spanish-language song that doesn’t have an accompanying English version.

A gain in streaming for the song supports its rank on both charts. The track logged 6.1 million streams during the week ending January 5, according to Nielsen Music, an 18 percent increase. It concurrently debuts at No. 47 on the Streaming Songs chart, which ranks weekly U.S. streaming data across all genres, marking Shakira’s fourth time on the four-year-old chart, and the first with a Spanish-language song.

Of the song’s total domestic weekly streams, 62 percent stem from YouTube, where its official video has reached 395 million global views to date. Meanwhile, “Chantaje” spends a fourth week at No. 1 on the Latin Digital Song Sales chart, despite a 4 percent dip in sales (to 5,000 downloads; most titles dropped in sales in the tracking week, following Christmas-week shopping the week before).

For nine years (2005-14), “La Tortura” held the record for the most weeks at No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs. It wasn’t until Enrique Iglesias‘ global hit “Bailando,” featuring Descemer Bueno and Gente de Zona, ran up 41 frames at No. 1 (through February 2015), dethroning “Hips Don’t Lie.” Since then, Nicky Jam and Iglesias also surpassed the reign of “Hips,” when their collaborative “El Perdon” tallied 30 weeks at No. 1 in March-October 2015.

Shakira is currently working on her 11th studio album, her first full-length Spanish release since 2010’s Sale el Sol.

Sparked by Its Use in iPhone 7 Ad, Sandoval’s “La Virgen de la Macarena” Gains New Audience

Arturo Sandoval is expannding his audience…

The 67-year-old Cuban jazz trumpeter, pianist and composer’s bullfighting song, “La Virgen de la Macarena,” continues its olé-worthy run on Billboard’s Latin Digital Songs chart.

Arturo Sandoval

Sparked by the 2003 track’s use an iPhone 7 ad, it currently ranks No. 2 on the chart, right behind right behind Shakira and Maluma’s hit “Chantaje.”

The Apple spot, “Dive,” was shot in Barcelona and features a virile man of a certain age who bears a winking resemblance to Pablo Picasso, who continued to seduce young muses in his senior years.

The week before the Apple ad debuted in early November, Sandoval’s “La Virgin de la Macarena” sold 5 downloads. In the commercial’s first week, the track sold 1,362 downloads.

The song had 35,000 Shazam tags in November, and a total of 6,000 downloads sold and 83,000 streams.

“La Virgen de la Macarena,” also known popularly as “the bullfighting song,” is a classic paso doble, a rousing piece of sonic bravura synonymous with the bullring. Written by Spanish composers Bernardo Bautista and Antonio Ortiz, it has been covered by artists including Paco de Lucia, Trio Los Panchos, Maynard Ferguson and Canadian Brass, but was first widely popularized through a recording of the piece by Mexican trumpeter Rafael Mendez.

The Virgen de la Macarena of the song is a statue of the Virgin Mary that resides in the cathedral in Seville, Spain. La Macarena has historically been closely associated with matadors and bullfighting. In 1920, the Virgen was dressed all in black to mourn the famous bullfighter Joselito, who died after being gored in the ring.

Sandoval’s version of “La Virgen de la Macarena” was included on his 2003 album Trumpet Evolution, an homage to great jazz trumpet players that also includes the Chet Baker classic “My Funny Valentine” and “’Round Midnight.” The album was released by Emilio Estefan’s Crescent Moon label.

“La Virgen De La Macarena” had its biggest week in the time frame ending November 24, when the song sold 2,200 downloads, a 96 percent increase from the week prior. It was streamed 23,000 times, an 84 percent increase from the week before.

The latest chart (for week of January 21) marks the track’s peak at no. 2 on the Latin Digital Song Sales chart, with 3,013 downloads.

The “Dive” ad currently has over 4 1/2 million views on YouTube, and thanks to Apple, new fans of “La Virgen de la Macarena” who may have never been anywhere near a bullring have discovered its brassy, dramatic appeal.

“I’m playing this song right before I do anything!” wrote one customer in the comments on the song’s Amazon Music page.

Shakira’s “Chantaje” Video Ranks No. 1 on YouTube’s Music Global Top 100

Shakira is this year’s YouTube music video sensation…

The 39-year-old Colombian superstar is closing the year as the No. 1 artist on YouTube’s Music Global Top 100.

Shakira

Shakira currently ranks No. 1 on the chart dated December 15 with the official music video for her new single “Chantaje” featuring Maluma with 57.6 million views during the period from December 9-15, a 17.8% increase over the previous week.

Shakira’s sultry clip also leads as the top video of the year with more than 268 million views (and counting).

But Shakira isn’t the only Latin artist to make the Top 10 for the week…

Ricky Martin ranks at No. 5 on the chart with the official music video for his single “Vente Pa’Ca,” featuring Maluma. The clip logged an additional 30.3 million views during the week.

Meanwhile, Daddy Yankee’s “Shaky Shaky” video comes in at No. 8 woth 29.6 million views during the week.

Further down the list: Carlos Vives and Shakira’s “La Bicicleta” video at No. 11, Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic” video at No. 13, J Balvin’s “Safari” video at No. 14, Zion & Lennox’s “Otra Vez” video featuring J Balvin at No. 15, Fifth Harmony’s “Work From Home” video at No. 17, and Maluma’s “Sin Contrato” video at No. 18.

Shakira’s “Chantaje,” Featuring Maluma, Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs Chart

Shakira has reached No. 1 with a bullet…

The 39-year-old Colombian superstar’s latest single, “Chantaje,” featuring Maluma, has debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart (dated November 19), becoming only the 14th track to debut atop the chart in its 30-year history.

Shakira

It’s Shakira’s 11th No. 1, and the first leader for fellow Colombian singer Maluma.

Further, “Chantaje” is only the second No. 1 debut on the list since the chart transitioned from an all-airplay chart to a multi-metric ranking in 2012, blending airplay, sales and streams.

The track simultaneously bows at No. 96 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Shakira’s 19th hit there and Maluma’s first.

Shakira Collaborates with Black M for French/English Single “Comme Moi”

Shakira is ready to make a splash in France…

The 39-year-old Colombian superstar has joined voices with popular French rapper Black M.

Shakira & Black M

Shakira sings in English on the bilingual (French/English) duet with a tropical sound, called “Comme Moi.”

Black M’s new album, Eternal Insatisfait follows his 2014 triple-platinum solo debut Les Yeux Plus Gros Que le Monde.

Shakira is revving up for the release of her own new album with another collaboration, which also recently dropped. Called “Chantaje,” it features fellow Colombian artist Maluma.

Shakira Releases New Single “Chantaje,” Featuring Maluma

It’s a serious case of musical blackmail for Shakira

The 39-year-old Colombian superstar has released her highly anticipated new single, “Chantaje,” featuring Maluma.

Shakira & Maluma

After revealing several details of her new single through guessing games on social media throughout the week, Shakira’s highly anticipated new single “Chantaje,” featuring Maluma, is finally here.

The pop/reggaeton-infused track, which Shakira promoted via guessing games on social media, is the first collaboration between the Colombian singers, although recently, Maluma premiered his remix to Shakira and Carlos Vives‘ summer hit “La bicicleta.”

After working on the remix, Maluma confessed to Billboard that he couldn’t miss the opportunity to work with the pop star again.

The “Chantaje” collaboration was made possible thanks to Sony Music, who proposed the idea after the “La bicicleta” remix.

“I was in Barcelona working with Shakira and it was an amazing experience,” Maluma says about the collaboration. “She’s a great artist and I learned a lot while working with her.”
