Mariah Carey Talks Recording Multiple Projects Worth of New Music

It appears new Mariah Carey music could be on the horizon…

During a conversation with Rolling Stone‘Rolling Stone Music Now, the 53-year-old half-Venezuelan American Grammy-winning singer/songwriter revealed that she’d recorded multiple projects in her Butterfly Lounge studio during the pandemic.

Mariah Carey“It’s about three or four different things,” Carey said. “One is a project that I’m almost finished with that I was doing some background vocal tweaks on. One is [new] songs that could be for the scripted series [by Lee Daniels] or a documentary. And then there’s a themed album. It’s something that people have been asking me to do for years, but it’s not done in the traditional sense. It’s not done yet, but I’m really excited about it. I’m working [on that album] with some very eclectic, newer artists, as well as some legendary folks.”

For the 25th anniversary of her sixth studio album Butterfly, Carey is releasing an expanded version of the LP with eight new bonus tracks, including a remake of “The Roof (When I Feel the Need)” with Brandy. However, she still looks back on the 1997 album and feels its single “Breakdown” wasn’t appreciated or supported by the label at the time.

“People did not believe in it, or believe in me in that genre and that moment,” she said, recalling that the label feared her change in sound was “too urban.” “By people, I mean the corporate morgue, the entities that run things. I mean, Tha Crossroads was such a big record!”

Meanwhile, any new album would be a follow-up to Carey’s 2018 fan favorite studio set Caution, which featured singles “GTFO,” “With You” and “A No No.”

“Warming up for the holidays,” Carey captioned the upbeat clip, which she shared on Twitter.

The 50-second video begins with Carey and her makeup and hair people joyously singing along to “All I Want for Christmas Is You” before her whole entourage joins in the fun.

This is the sixth time Carey has embarked on the annual Christmas tour and the second time she’s taken it to Europe. The 11-date trek launched December 1 in Norway and wraps December 17 in Spain.

Beginning in February, Carey will kick off a 22-city North American tourin support of her latest album, Caution.

Mariah Carey Replaces Herself at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums Chart

Mariah Carey is making history…

The 48-year-old Half-Venezuelan American singer has become the first artist to replace herself at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart since its inception in 2012.

Mariah Carey

The diva’s Merry Christmas leaps 4-1 on the ranking dated December 8 and deposes her own LP, Caution, which slips 1-8 in its second week.

Merry Christmas, released in 1994, earned 24,000 equivalent album units in the week ending November 29, according to Nielsen Music, while Caution netted 14,000 units sold.

As MerryChristmas ascends, Carey collects her third leader on the chart, following Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse, a one-week champ in 2014 and Caution.

In addition to its Top R&B Albums coronation, Merry Christmas also rallies 24-9 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and 50-19 on the Billboard 200.

Nearly 25 years after its debut, Merry Christmas consistently remains one of the top performing holiday albums each year, with its success largely traceable to “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” virtually a modern standard in the holiday catalog.

“All I Want for Christmas Is You” also makes its annual return to several Billboard charts, including a 29-14 surge on the Billboard Hot 100 and a 30-8 roar on Streaming Songs. The tune also inaugurates this year’s first edition of the seasonal Holiday 100 chart in a familiar spot — No. 1 — for its 31st week overall.

Special “Mariah Carey Experience” Exhibit Launched in New York City

They’re celebrating Mariah Carey in a big way in the Big Apple

The 49-year-old Venezuelan-American singer’s label has launched the Mariah Carey Experience, a limited-time pop-up meant to celebrate the career of the diva and promote her latest album Caution?, in New York City.

Located inside Sony Studios, the extended musical journey on full display for public consumption features mini exhibits meant to bring Carey’s career to life.

Along with a display of dresses Carey has worn during her career, the special exhibit also includes a listening wall, where you can hear all 18 of Carey’s Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles with personal headphones, including her debut single “Vision of Love,” tracks from 1997’s Butterfly (“Honey” and “My All“), and the hits from 2005’s The Emancipation of Mimi (“We Belong Together” and “Don’t Forget About Us“).

Mariah Carey Experience

Some of the most Instagrammable opportunities in the Mariah Carey Experience are backdrops that mimic the vibe of Caution, the butterfly-swarmed cover from Butterfly and even a Christmas-themed photo booth honoring Carey’s holiday classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” Additionally, there’s a bed and neon rainbow ripped from the iconic David LaChapelle photoshoot for Rainbow that serves as a fun way to salute her hit album.

Mariah Carey Experience

It was 28 years ago when Carey rose to acclaim with her self-titled debut album and endeared herself to a generation of fans who loved her brash attitude, sugary-sweet pop hooks and all-around diva mentality, a label she by and large embraced.

Throughout the years, Carey has maintained a special perch reserved for her and the undeniable uniqueness of her career, despite some public missteps.

It’s a continuing relevance that only a select few female pop singers have been able to achieve. Carey has maintained her brand despite a sea of mimickers, a cutthroat industry and fickle fans, many of whom have grown up and out of theMimimachine.

The Mariah Carey Experience at New York’s Sony Square (25 Madison Ave.) is open until December 4.

Mariah Carey to Be Honored as Part of Genius’ Next “Genius Level”

Mariah Carey is a genius

The 48-year-old half-Venezuelan American singer will be honored in Genius‘ next installment of Genius Level, its conversation-based series that highlights artists, songwriters, and executives who’ve shaped today’s music industry.

Mariah Carey

The event will feature Carey discussing her extensive career with Rob Markman, veteran music journalist and Genius’s Head of Artist Relations.

“People know Mariah Carey is a voice for the ages, but not as many people realize she’s also one of our greatest songwriters. Her work behind the scenes and on stage set a new bar for solo artists, and her collaborations with everyone from Walter Afanasieff to Jermaine Dupri broke new ground in music,” said Elizabeth Milch, Genius’s director of content of the recent Songwriters Hall of Fame nominee. “Mariah is responsible for lyrics, melodies, and arrangements that we love to sing… albeit not always in five octaves. She’s the pinnacle of a genius-level artist and we couldn’t be more excited to celebrate her artistic impact.”

Genius Level, inspired by the song encyclopedia’s collection of in-depth discussions with today’s top artists, has hosted a number of icons including Grammy award-winning artist and songwriter The-Dream, producer DJ Premier, and Nicki Minaj.

The event will take place in Brooklyn, New York, on Nov. 14 in front of a live studio audience of Carey’s biggest fans. A social media contest to win tickets to the show will take place at noon EST on Nov 12. If you can’t see the conversation in person, it premieres on Genius on November 16, the same day as release of the singer’s 15th studio album, Caution.
