Canelo Alvarez Named an Executive Producer on “The Long Game”

Canelo Alvarez is embracing his artistic side…

The 33-year-old Mexican boxing great and entrepreneur will serve as an executive producer on the film, The Long Game, which earned the SXSW Narrative Spotlight Audience Award in 2023.

The Long Game, inspired by the book Mustang Miracle written by Humberto G. Garcia, follows the true story of five young Mexican American caddies in 1955 who created their own golf course in the middle of the South Texas brush country. Despite outdated and inferior equipment and no professional instruction to begin with, they would go on to compete against wealthy, all-white teams and win the 1957 Texas State High School Golf Championship.

It stars Jay Hernandez, Dennis Quaid, Cheech Marin, Julian Works, Paulina Chavez, Jaina Lee Ortiz, Brett Cullen and Oscar Nuñez. Quintana penned the script alongside Jennifer C. Stetson and Paco Farias.

The Guadalajara-born boxing star is an avid golfer himself and has his golf apparel line “No Golf, No Life” collection.

“From the first time I saw The Long Game I was inspired to give whatever support was needed. I connected with The Long Game on so many levels and I am excited for the public to know more about true stories within the history of sports that haven’t been told.” Alvarez tells Deadline in a statement.

He added, “I’m proud to be part of a team that is sharing the story of five Mexican-Americans with determination, drive and passion to create their own journey. This film is an inspiration for the golf community and the world.”

Mucho Mas Media and Bonniedale Entertainment teamed up to release the film in theaters.

Marianly Tejada to Star in Netflix’s “Ransom Canyon”

Marianly Tejada has lined up her next television project.

The Dominican actress has joined the cast of Netflix’s Ransom Canyon as a series regular alongside Jack Schumacher, Garrett Wareing and Andrew Liner.

Based on the book series by Jodi Thomas, Ransom Canyon is a romance-fueled family drama and contemporary Western saga that charts the intersecting lives of three ranching families, all set against the rugged expanse of Texas Hill Country.

Tejada plays the rough and whip-smart Ellie Estevez, who is the personification of “Do no harm, but take no sh*t,” specifically from resident curmudgeon Cap (Brolin), whom she looks after. Ellie’s young, hungry and driven to make her mark in Ransom Canyon. She has no interest in settling down with a romantic partner, at least not yet, which is why she’s a bit thrown when she crosses paths with mysterious newcomer Yancy.

Robledo plays Jack Yellowbird. Jack is Lucas’ best friend. He is a member of the high school band and has a car. Jack believes in love and does not like guys who are handed a “hall pass” through life.

Guardado plays Tim O’Grady, Reid’s eternal shadow and the wide receiver on the football team. Together, Tim and Reid have been through a lot – and are harboring some heavy secrets. Although he butts heads with his mother, Angie, Tim has a strong relationship with his Aunt Quinn.

Cortez plays Kai, a deputy on the Ransom Canyon Police Force under Sheriff Dan Lazano. Kai is learning the ropes in his job: picking up drunks, working security detail, and handing out parking tickets when needed. Kai is wary and suspicious of the new foreman in town, Yancy. Kai is protective of Ellie and doesn’t want to see Ellie hurt by Yancy.

April Blair is the series creator, writer and executive producer. Amanda Marsalis is set to direct the first two of Season 1’s 10 episodes.

Tejada’s previous credits include Peacock‘s One of Us is Lying.

Warner Bros. to Release Sci-Fi Thriller “Reminiscence” with Natalie Martinez in September

Warner Bros. has scheduled Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy’s feature directorial debut Reminiscence, featuring the 36-year-old Cuban American actress, for theaters and HBO Max on September 3, Labor Day weekend.

Starring Hugh Jackman, the sci-fi thriller had a previous release date of April 16.

The film follows Nick Bannister (Jackman), a private investigator of the mind, who navigates the darkly alluring world of the past by helping his clients access lost memories. Living on the fringes of the sunken Miami coast, his life is forever changed when he takes on a new client, Mae (Rebecca Ferguson). A simple matter of lost and found becomes a dangerous obsession. As Bannister fights to find the truth about Mae’s disappearance, he uncovers a violent conspiracy, and must ultimately answer the question: how far would you go to hold on to the ones you love?

In addition to Jackman, Ferguson and Martinez, the film also stars Thandie Newton, Cliff Curtis, Marina de Tavira, Daniel WuMojean Aria, Brett Cullen, Angela Sarafyan and Nico Parker.

Lifetime Renews Sanchez’s “Devious Maids” for a Second Season

Roselyn Sanchez will be reporting for maid duty for another season…

As predicted, Lifetime has renewed the 40-year-old Puerto Rican actress’ sudser Devious Maids for a 13-episode second season.

Following a not-so-spectacular premiere, the telenovela adaptation has managed to see ratings steadily improve to become Lifetime’s fastest-growing drama in its history.

On August 4, Devious Maids garnered a series high 2.9 million total viewers, up 45% vs. the show’s June 23 premiere. This past Sunday the series registered 2.7 million viewers.

Devious Maids has made Lifetime the No.1 cable network in the Sunday 10 PM time slot among women.

“One of the most daring series on television, Devious Maids has quickly become a hit,” said Lifetime’s EVP and GM Rob Sharenow.

Created by Marc Cherry and executive produced by Eva Longoria, the series is based on the telenovela Ellas son la alegría del hogar.

Devious Maids centers on a close-knit group of maids (Sanchez, Ana Ortiz, Dania Ramírez, Edy Ganem and Judy Reyes), bonded together by their jobs, life struggles and boss’ melodramatic “upstairs-downstairs” universe.

The women turn to one another for support after a fellow maid Flora (Paula Garcés) is brutally murdered at the home of her employers.

Devious Maids also stars Susan Lucci, Rebecca Wisocky, Tom Irwin, Mariana Klaveno, Grant Show, Matt Cedeño, Melinda Page Hamilton, Drew Van Acker, Brianna Brown and Brett Cullen.
