Rebeca Andrade & Brazil Women’s Gymnastics Team Earn Historic Bronze at 2024 Paris Games

2024 Paris GamesRebeca Andrade and her women’s gymnastics teammates have vaulted into the Brazilian sports history books.

The 25-year-old Brazilian artistic gymnast, who claimed an Olympics gold medal in the vault and a silver medal in the all-around at the 2020 Tokyo Games, dazzled at Bercy Arena on Tuesday to help lead her team to a historic bronze medal in the women’s artistic team all-around event at the 2024 Paris Games.

Rebecca Andrade & Brazil Women's Gymnastics TeamIt’s the nation’s first-ever team medal in women’s gymnastics.

Andrade, who has advanced to the women’s artistic individual all-around following her performance during Sunday’s qualification round, scored a 15.100 on the vault, a 14.533 in the uneven bars, a 14.133 on the balance beam and a 14.200 on the floor exercise.

Andrade’s teammate, Flávia Saraiva, went viral after suffering an accident that left her bandaged and bruised.

During warm-ups for Brazil’s uneven bars rotation on the day of the team finals, Saraiva injured herself after taking a frightening fall from the elevated bars, leaving her with a split-open eye that became a pseudo symbol for the Brazilian team’s impressive showing.

The 24-year-old veteran of the sport went straight into her routine following a quick med check, clinching crucial points for the all-around podium spot.

The Brazilian team — which also includes Jade Barbosa, Lorrane Oliveira and Julia Soares — ended with a total score of 164.497, around 6 points behind the gold-winning U.S. team led by Simone Biles.

Saraiva, marking her third Olympic showing, beamed as she received the bronze.

Brazil’s Rayssa Leal Claims Bronze in Women’s Street Skateboarding at 2024 Paris Games

2024 Paris GamesRayssa Leal has skated her way to another Olympic medal…

The 16-year-old Brazilian professional skateboarder, considered one of the sport’s brightest stars, claimed a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Games in the women’s street skateboarding competition.

Rayssa LealWhile it may have been a bronze, it was celebrated in the stands like it was a gold.

When Leal stuck her all-important final trick of the women’s street skateboarding final at the 2024 Summer Olympics, a deafening roar went up from the many green-and-gold-clad fans watching on.

In that moment, Leal – an undeniably popular figure back home in Brazil with huge support in Paris to prove it – jumped from fifth to third, capitalizing on her final hope of securing a second Olympic medal.

Rayssa LealOut in front were the Japanese duo of Coco Yoshizawa, who took gold thanks to a massive score on her fourth trick, and Liz Akama, who’d led for much of the competition.

Just as with this event in Tokyo, the entire podium was made up of teenagers: Yoshizawa is 14, Kama 15, and Leal – who became Brazil’s youngest ever Olympic medalist when she won silver three years ago – 16.

Rayssa LealAlthough she wasn’t able to upgrade her silver from the 2020 Tokyo Games, Leal, along with her huge number of supporters, would have been equally joyous and relieved to win bronze in dramatic fashion, scoring 88.83 with her final act of the competition to climb ahead of China’s Cui Chenxi on the leaderboard.

“It was like a gold medal because … she had to make it,” Brazilian fan Michelle Arruda, who bought tickets for the women’s street skateboarding to watch Leal a year ago, told CNN Sport. “It was a lot of emotion and felt like the Olympic spirit – you have to be here to understand what it is.

“You get so nervous, it’s like you are there with them … We were literally praying, holding hands. It was like: ‘She’s going to make it.’ I don’t know how, but I really believed that she was going to make it.”

Leal first catapulted to fame when a video of her skateboarding aged seven, dressed in a blue fairy princess costume, went viral. It was shared by skateboarding icon Tony Hawk, who tipped his hat to the “fairytale heelflip.”

Known as the fadinha do skate – Portuguese for “skate fairy” – from then on, Leal’s popularity has continued to grow. She has acquired a number of sponsors, including Nike and Monster Energy, and boasts 7 million followers on Instagram, all while her skateboarding has continued to take an upward trajectory.

The highlight of her performance at Paris’ Urban Park, a temporary facility erected on the Place de la Concorde, was scoring 92.88 for the first of her two successful tricks – the second-highest score of the final.

“When I was very young, I dreamed of becoming a skateboard athlete,” Leal told reporters. “And here I am, with a second Olympic medal from the Games. Once again, thanks God I won a medal. I’m very happy to be here.”

Manchester City Completes Five-Year Deal with Sávio

Sávio is headed to England.

Manchester City has completed a deal for the 20-year-old Brazil winger, whose full name is Sávio Moreira de Oliveira, on a five-year-deal, the club has confirmed.

SávioSources told ESPN that Manchester City has paid an initial transfer fee of €25 million ($27.3m), plus a potential €15m ($16.4m) in add-ons.

Sávio joins the team from French side Troyes after loan spells at PSV Eindhoven and Girona.

Both Troyes and Girona are part of the City Football Group (CFG), which is headed by Manchester City.

“I’m so happy to be joining Manchester City, the Premier League champions and Club World Cup winners,” Sávio said.

“Everyone knows they are the best team in the world right now, so to be here is very exciting for me.

“I’m excited about the chance to work under Pep Guardiola, one of the greatest coaches ever, and someone I know will help me improve even more.

“I had an amazing time in Spain and I’m looking forward to a new challenge of playing in the Premier League and alongside some of the best players in the world.

“I can’t wait to meet the fans and my new team-mates and hopefully be a part of bringing more success to City.”

Sávio scored 11 goals in 41 games for Girona last season as they earned qualification for the Champions League for the first time in their history.

He played for Brazil in this year’s Copa América and scored one goal while playing in each of their four games until they were knocked out by Uruguay in the quarterfinals.

Manuel Ugarte Buries Decisive Goal to Lead Uruguay to Copa America Quarterfinals Victory Over Brazil

Manuel Ugarte celebrating a deciding kick…

The 23-year-old Uruguayan professional footballer buried the decisive spot kick to help Uruguay beat Brazil 4-2 on penalties at the end of a bruising 0-0 draw and lead Uruguay into the Copa América semifinals.

Manuel Ugarte,

Despite picking up a red card, Uruguay were able to push things to the penalty shootout against Brazil. There will be some worries for Uruguay as Ronald Araujo left the game with an injury and Nahitan Nandez was sent off with a straight red card, but when the goal is to win, surviving with 10 men for 16 minutes of regulation is a testament to Uruguay’s improvement.

Sergio Rochet saved Brazil’s first penalty in the shootout from Éder Militão while his teammate Douglas Luiz hit the post. Brazil keeper Alisson Becker denied José Giménez but Ugarte buried the decisive spot kick.

Sitting sixth in World Cup qualifying, Brazil are at risk of missing the 2026 World Cup, which is unheard of. The defense did show up against Uruguay, holding the top-scoring attack of the tournament to no goals, but the attack was blanked as well.

Moving forward, Uruguay’s questions are easier to answer as they’re at least still in Copa America while Brazil will have time to stew on things before going back to preseason training with their clubs. It’s not optimal but the Marcelo Bielsa effect is working and could still lead to a Copa America title.

After crashing out of the 2022 World Cup during the group stage, Uruguay’s growth under Bielsa shows as they legged out a gritty victory, but things won’t get easier facing Colombia in the semifinals of the tournament. Colombia is unbeaten in 29 matches with a superb attack and team unity to match.

Without Vinicius Junior due to suspension, Brazil struggled to create on the attacking end, and coach Dorival Junior has plenty of questions to answer. Lucas Paqueta and Rodrygo haven’t been able to integrate into the attack, and with Neymar Jr out of Copa America with a knee injury, no one has shown that they can replace him as the talisman up top.

Marta Named to Brazil’s Women’s Soccer Team for 6th Olympic Games

Marta is bracing for her final Olympic bow…

The 38-year-old Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a forward for the Orlando Pride in the National Women’s Soccer League has been named to Brazil‘s women’s soccer team for the 2024 Paris Games by coach Arthur Elias.

MartaMarta, widely considered one of the best women’s players in history, had previously said she intends to retire from the national team after playing in the Olympics for the sixth time.

The Orlando Pride forward has two silver medals after Brazil lost to the United States in the final of both the 2004 and 2008 tournaments, but has never won gold.

In 2021 in Tokyo, Marta became the first player to score in five consecutive Olympics.

“She brings a lot to the table, she’s the greatest athlete of all time,” Elias said of Marta. “She’s playing well, she deserved to be on this list.

“Marta’s performance, especially after she came back to play for her club, which is fighting for the top spot in the U.S., her behavior, with or without the ball, makes all the athletes see her as an example.

“I have the challenge of finding a way of playing to maximize her game. But she knows that you can only win with everyone.”

Elias said at a news conference that he wanted a mix of experience and young talents, with an eye toward the future. Brazil will host the 2027 edition of the Women’s World Cup.

Half of the players in the Olympic team also played for Brazil at last year’s World Cup under Elias’ predecessor, Pia Sundhage. Other veterans, such as strikers Debinha and Cristiane, did not make the final list.

Brazil is in Group C of the Olympic tournament. Its first match will be on July 25 against Nigeria in Bordeaux. Japan and World Cup champion Spain are also in the group.

Davinson Sánchez Helps Lead Colombia to Copa America Victory Over Costa Rica for 10th Straight Win

It’s a perfect 10 for Davinson Sánchez and his Colombia teammates…

The 28-year-old Colombian professional footballer and Jhon Córdoba scored three minutes apart in the second half on Friday to help Colombia advance to the Copa América quarterfinals with a 3-0 win over Costa Rica.

Davinson SánchezColombia controlled possession (62%) for the second straight game and led 1-0 at halftime on Luis Díaz‘s penalty kick in the 31st minute.

Los Cafeteros kept up the pressure in the second half and wrapped up Group D with a dominating performance in front of 27,386 pro-Colombian fans at State Farm Stadium. Colombia outshot Costa Rica 14-5 and faces Brazil on Tuesday in Santa Clara, California, to close out the group stage.

Colombia has won 10 straight and is unbeaten in 25 games (20-0-5) since losing at Argentina in a World Cup qualifier in 2022. Costa Rica did not have a shot on goal.

Costa Rica had the first big surprise of the tournament, playing nine-time Copa América champion Brazil to a scoreless tie despite being outshot 18-2.

Los Ticos found themselves on their heels again against another powerhouse team in the desert — and it didn’t go quite as well for the youngest roster in the tournament.

Colombia controlled possession (66%) in its opening 2-1 win over Paraguay and dominated the ball early against Costa Rica.

Díaz had the first good chance in the fifth minute, just missing the crossbar on a header. James Rodríguez followed with the first shot on goal in the 20th minute, but Patrick Sequeira sprawled out for a diving save.

Díaz scored on the penalty kick after Sequeira took down a charging Córdoba at the edge of the penalty box. Los Cafeteros kept up the pressure, just missing another goal when Sánchez couldn’t get a head on Díaz’s bouncing cross.

Colombia had 71% possession in the first half and kept control in the second.

Sánchez made it 2-0 with a header off a corner kick in the 59th minute. Córdoba scored when he slipped behind Costa Rica’s defense and beat Sequeira from a tough angle.

Juventus Close to Wrapping Up Deal for Aston Villa Midfielder Douglas Luiz

Douglas Luiz is thisclose to kickin’ it in Italy…

Juventus is close to wrapping up a deal for the 26-year-old Brazilian professional footballer and Aston Villa midfielder, per ESPN sources.

Douglas Luiz, Luiz, a Brazil international is set to move to Turin for a fee of around £43 million ($54m). Juventus pair Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea are set to move to Aston Villa in a separate deal worth £18.6m.

A source has told ESPN that the deals are progressing and should be formally completed by the end of next week. United States midfielder Weston McKennie was initially part of the discussions between Juventus and Aston Villa, but has not been included in the move.

Luiz, who moved to Villa Park from Manchester City in 2019, was a key part of Unai Emery‘s team last season as they finished fourth in the Premier League and secured a place in the Champions League.

Villa have been under pressure to raise funds after reporting a loss of nearly £120m in March.

Luiz leaves Villa having made 204 appearances in five years, scoring 22 goals.

Villa have also agreed deals for Tim Iroegbunam to join Everton and for Omari Kellyman to join Chelsea.

Iling-Junior will move back to England after spending time in Chelsea’s youth set-up before joining Juventus.

The 20-year-old has represented England at Under-21 level and has made 45 appearances for Juventus since making his senior debut in 2022.

Barrenechea, 23, spent time on loan at Frosinone last season.
