Residente to Receive BMI Champion Award

Residente is a true champion…

The 40-year-old Puerto Rican singer/songwriter will be receiving the BMI Champion Award at the 25th Annual BMI Latin Awards, Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) announces exclusively on Billboard.

It’s the first time in the history of the annual gala that the honor will be given to a Latin artist.

The Champion Award will recognize Residente’s musical career and philanthropic efforts.

“Outside of being one of Latin music’s most highly decorated award-winners, Residente is a true humanitarian,” said Delia Orjuela, BMI Vice President of Creative, Latin Music in a statement.

The 22-time Latin Grammy winner now joins Keith Urban and Congressman Doug Collins (R-GA-9), who were both honored with the champion award, in honor to their commitment to support the next generation of songwriters and music makers.

Meanwhile, Luis Fonsi will receive the BMI President’s Award at the ceremony that will be held on Tuesday, March 20th at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA and hosted by BMI President & CEO Mike O’Neill and Delia Orjuela.

The accolades keep coming for J Balvin…

The 31-year-old Colombian singer picked up a big prize at the annual BMI Latin Music Awards, which were held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills.

J Balvin, who recently joined voices with former Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello and Pitbull on a single for the latest Fast & Furious movie, earned Contemporary Latin Song of the Year 2016 honors for his hit single “Ginza.”

Horacio Palencia won Regional Mexican Song of the Year for his hit “Solo con verte” (Banda MS). He was also awarded with the Regional Mexican Songwriter of the Year for the sixth time.

The iconic East L.A. band Los Lobos, whose career spans more than four decades, was honored with the special BMI Icon Award and celebrated by taking the stage and performing a medley of their classic tunes.

For the second year in a row, the BMI Latin publisher of the year award went to Sony/ATV Music Publishing with 14 songs among the most popular of the year, including Gente de Zona‘s “La gozadera,” Ricky Martin‘s “La mordidita” and Yandel‘s “Encantadora.”

Medrano to Participate at This Year’s Billboard Latin Music Conference

Manuel Medrano is representing the next generation of hitmakers…

The 29-year-old Colombian singer and songwriter will speak at the “I Write the Song, the New Generation” panel at this year’s Billboard Latin Music Conference.

Medrano will be joined by fellow hitmakers Joss Favela, Servando, Horacio Palencia, Erika Ender and The Rude Boyz on the panel..

Medrano is a Latin Grammy-winning singer/songwriter known for his romantic ballads like “Una y otra vez“; regional Mexican singer Favela is ASCAP‘s 2016 & 2017 songwriter of the year; while Palencia is a five-time BMI songwriter of the year.

Servando is the songwriter behind Enrique Iglesias‘ Grammy-nominated hit “Duele el corazón“; Ender co-wrote Luis Fonsi‘s chart-topping hit “Despacito“; and to round out the panelists are The Rude Boyz, hitmakers behind Shakira’s “Chantaje” and Maluma’s “Borró cassette.”

The “I Write the Song” panel will take place April 26. Other confirmed panels and panelists include “Socializing Maluma” featuring the Colombian superstar; “The Latin Trap Panel” with artists like Farruko, Ozuna and Bad Bunny; and the memoirs and biopics panel titled “Me, Me, Me” with Ednita Nazario.

The 2017 Billboard Latin Music Conference will kick off on April 24 with more panels and panelists set to be announced in the upcoming weeks leading up the conference.

Los Lobos to Receive BMI Icon Award

The members of Los Lobos are reuniting for a special honor…

The multiple Grammy-winning rock band from East Los Angeles, best known for their hit version of “La Bamba,” will receive the BMI Icon Award during the organization’s 24th annual Latin Awards.

The event, to be hosted by BMI president & CEO Mike O’Neill and Delia Orjuela, BMI VP of Latin Writer/Publisher Relations, will be held March 21 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Formed in 1973 by David Hidalgo, Cesar Rosas, Louie Perez and Conrad Lozano — fellow students at Garfield High School in East L.A. — Los Lobos (the group also includes Steve Berlin and Enrique Gonzalez), have been doing Latin music long before Latin music was cool, blending rock ‘n roll with Chicano roots.

The group, bilingual and bicultural before the concept became a buzzword, rose to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1987 with their cover of Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba,” the same year they won a Grammy in the-then newly instated category of Best Mexican American Performance for the song “Anselma.”

Los Lobos’ exploration of the musical landscape has continued unabated, spanning Latin, folk, rock and even R&B. They’ve collected three Grammy awards along the way, plus Billboard’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.

The BMI Icon Award, whose past recipients include Gloria Estefan, Paul Simon, Dolly Parton and Carlos Santana, is presented to songwriters who have had unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers.

“Los Lobos have been musical ambassadors to the Mexican-American community,” said BMI’s Orjuela in a statement. “Their music reflects the diversity and musical heritage of America, weaving together blues, rock, norteño, and cumbia.”

During the March 21 ceremony, BMI will also honor the Latin songwriter, song and publisher of the year plus the writers and publishers of BMI’s most-performed songs of the past year.

This will also mark the first time ever that BMI expands its criteria for determining winners; in addition to terrestrial radio performances, data will also include streaming and satellite radio.

Trailer Released for Carey’s Event Series “Mariah’s World” for E!

Mariah Carey is letting you into her world…

E! has released the first trailer for the 46-year-old half-Venezuelan American singer’s reality series Mariah’s World, an eight-part event series that follows the Grammy-winning singer as she kicks off her Sweet Sweet Fantasy world tour.

The series follows Carey as she kicks off her tour of the United Kingdom, Europe and Africa, all while planning her upcoming wedding.

As a singer, songwriter and producer, Carey has been recognized with five Grammy Awards, 21 American Music Awards, 14 Billboard Music Awards and BMI’s Icon Award, among others.

She also was named Billboard’s Artist of the Decade and the World Music Awards’ World’s Best Selling Female Artist of the Millennium.

Later this summer, Carey will return to Las Vegas for the second half of her Mariah #1 to Infinity residency at The Colosseum, then she will head to Latin America later this fall with her Sweet Sweet Fantasy tour in Argentina, Chile, Brazil, and Mexico.

Mariah’s World premieres in the U.S. and Canada on Sunday, December 4 at 9:00 pm.

Premieres outside North America will then follow on E!’s 15 international channels, reaching 153 countries in 24 languages with the UK, Australia and New Zealand premiering within 24 hours of the U.S., and all international channels within two weeks of the E! U.S. broadcast.

Trevi Signs with Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI)

Gloria Trevi has new representation when it comes to her music…

The 46-year-old Mexican singer has signed with Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) for representation of the public performances of her music catalog, according to Billboard.

Moving forward, BMI will represent Trevi’s complete catalog, according to her management. Trevi was formerly signed to Mexico’s Society of Authors and Composers (SACM), through a license with ASCAP.

Hailed as the  “Supreme Diva of Mexican Pop” by  VH1, Trevi is one of the most celebrated figures in Latin pop, both as a musical artist and as a personality with a career that spans 25 years. She has  sold more than 20 million records.

“She’s an amazing performer who exudes so much magic on stage. As a songwriter, she evokes raw emotion and transparency, which has connected her with her myriad of fans,” said Delia Orjuela, BMI’s vice president of Latin Music. “I’ve been a fan of Gloria’s for years and foresee her flourishing even more as her brand expands.”

Trevi’s brand includes A Toda Gloria, a reality television series on mun2, and an upcoming biopic titled simply Gloria.

A prolific touring artist, Trevi became famous in the 1990s thanks to her rebellious songs and attitude, earning her the nickname “Mexican Madonna.”

Pitbull Receives BMI President’s Award

He’s made music that has seriously entertained the masses… And, now Pitbull is being recognized for his influence on the entertainment industry.

The 31-year-old Cuban American rap superstar—who recently partnered with Jennifer Lopez on “Dance Again,” their second hit single together—received the BMI President’s Award during the 19th edition of the BMI Awards.

Held Friday night at the Encore Hotel in Las Vegas, the gala also served to recognize the work of songwriters and recording studios for the success of their musical creations in 2011.

Pitbull, who performed at the ceremony, also received the BMI award for songwriter of the year, a recognition he shared with Juan Luis Morena Luna “Wisin,” Llandel Veguilla Malave “Yandel” and Espinoza Paz.

“Niña de mi corazon,” recorded by La Arrolladora Banda El Limon, was selected as the BMI Latin song of the year with the award going to songwriter Horacio Palencia.

In the past, the BMI President’s Award has been presented to Juanes, Kike Santander and Gloria Estefan.
