Jennifer Lopez’s “This Is Me… Now” Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales Chart

The 54-year-old Puerto Rican superstar has earned her third No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart (dated March 2), as her new studio album This Is Me… Now debuts atop the tally.

Jennifer LopezLopez was last at No. 1 more than 20 years ago, when J to Tha L-O! The Remixes spent two weeks atop the chart in February and March of 2002. She scored her first No. 1 on the list with J.Lo in 2001.

In the tracking week ending February 22, This Is Me… Now sold 14,000 copies in the U.S. Of that sum, physical sales comprise 11,000 (6,000 on CD and 5,000 on vinyl) and digital download sales comprise 3,000. The album was available in four CD variants (including one that had a signed insert), nine vinyl editions (all were color variants, including one with a signed insert) and three digital album variations (a standard version, a deluxe edition with two bonus tracks and a commentary edition sold via Lopez’s official webstore).

This Is Me… Now also debuts at No. 1 on Top Current Album Sales, No. 1 on Tastemaker Albums, No. 7 on Vinyl Albums, No. 7 on Independent Albums and No. 38 on the Billboard 200.

Top Current Album Sales ranks the week’s top-selling new/current albums (non-catalog/older titles). Vinyl Album tallies the week’s top-selling vinyl releases. Tastemaker Albums measures the top-selling titles at independent and small chain record stores. Independent Albums ranks the most popular independently released albums of the week, by units.

On the Billboard 200, This Is Me… Now marks Lopez’s 13th total chart entry and 11th top 40-charting effort. It’s her first studio album in nearly a decade, and her first release outside the major label system, as the new set was issued via Nuyorican/BMG.

“This is the first step of an immediate strategy with a long-term goal as the incredible content to support the album continues to roll out,” says Cyndi Lynott, SVP marketing at BMG, “including the This Is Me…Now: A Love Story Amazon Original, a documentary entitled The Greatest Love Story Never Told, and of course her massive summer tour.”

In total, This Is Me… Now marks Lopez’s ninth top 10 on Top Album Sales and 13th chart entry overall. The new release is a sister project to Lopez’s third album, This Is Me… Then, which was released 2002 and peaked at No. 2 on the chart.

Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart ranks the top-selling albums of the week based only on traditional album sales. The chart’s history dates back to May 25, 1991, the first week Billboard began tabulating charts with electronically monitored piece count information from SoundScan, now Luminate. Pure album sales were the sole measurement utilized by the Billboard 200 albums chart through the list dated December 6, 2014, after which that chart switched to a methodology that blends album sales with track equivalent album units and streaming equivalent album units.

Pitbull Extends Global Publishing Deal with BMG

The 42-year-old Cuban American rapper, singer, songwriter, businessman and actor, born Armando Perez, has extended his global publishing deal with BMG.

PitbullPitbull first signed to the company nearly a decade ago, and under the renewed partnership, his back catalog of hits and future songs will be administered by the BMG team.

Pitbull’s feel-good anthem “Give Me Everything,” featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer, hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated July 9 for one week in 2011, while “Timber,” his collaboration with Kesha, went to No. 1 on the Hot 100 chart on January 18, 2014, leading for three weeks.

Pitbull has sold more than 25 million studio albums and over 100 million singles worldwide. His music video have over 15 billion views on YouTube.

He has won one Grammy, one Latin Grammy, three Billboard Music Awards and nine Billboard Latin Music Awards.

The 54-year-old Puerto Rican superstar has agreed to a new recording and publishing partnership with BMG.

Jennifer LopezUnder the global alliance, J.Lo will release her forthcoming ninth studio album, This Is Me…Now—home to 13 tracks, released via Nuyorican/BMG.

The set will mark Lopez’s first studio album as a solo artist in nine years, following the 2014 release of A.K.A. on Capitol Records. That album, produced by RedOne, peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 chart. In 2022, she and Maluma released the soundtrack to their film Marry Me under Universal Studios/Sony Music US Latin.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with her and her team to release her first album in nearly a decade,” said Thomas Coesfeld, BMG’s CEO in a statement, calling Lopez a “global superstar artist, entertainer… a phenomenon.”

Other songwriter-producers who worked on the album include Hitboy, Ink, Tay Keith, Yeti Beats, Carter Lang, Kim “Kaydence” Krysiuk, with BMG’s Brandon Riester serving as the album’s A&R.

According to the press statement, the upcoming set “is an exciting musical trilogy showcasing the triple-threat’s extraordinary talents.”

Howie Dorough & Fellow Backstreet Boys Release Claymation Video for “Christmas in New York”

The 49-year-old half-Puerto Rican singer and his fellow Backstreet Boys have released a new music video for their holiday track “Christmas in New York.”

The claymation dolls of the boy group witness and participate in classic scenes.

One features a dressed up Santa with an elf at his side ringing a bells and asking for donations with a big red bucket. The dolls head down to the TV-decorated intersection of Times Square, take a horse-drawn carriage ride in Central Park, view the holiday windows at Macy’s 34th street and go ice-skating in Rockefeller Center.

“All the elves are busy/ On Macy’s eighth floor/ It’s good to know there is still a miracle on 34th/ But what I love the most/ Is holding you this close/ This is what they made the Season for/ Oh, spending Christmas in/ Oh, another Christmas in/ Oh, yes, another Christmas in New York,” Littrell closes out the song with the rest of the members.

“Christmas in New York” hails from the boy band’s A Very Backstreet Christmas. The LP — which marked the group’s first collection of yuletide songs and its first studio effort in three years — was released on October 14 via BMG. The set charted at No. 17 on the Billboard 200 following its release.

In addition to “Christmas in New York,” other holiday tracks like “White Christmas,” “Silent Night,” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” are included on the album.

“Christmas in New York” is one of three original Christmas songs on the album; the others are titled “Together” and “Happy Days.”

Juan Gabriel’s Estate Signs Exclusive Worldwide Agreement with Virgin Music US Latin; New Music Releases Expected

There’s new Juan Gabriel music heading your way…

Six years after his death, the late Mexican superstar’s estate has signed an exclusive worldwide agreement with Virgin Music US Latin, which will represent the singer’s post-2008 catalog and future recordings, and has also extended its publishing administration agreement with Universal Music Publishing Group, which will exclusively represent Gabriel’s extraordinary catalog of songs worldwide.

Juan GabrielThe deal is particularly important because unbeknownst to many, Gabriel left behind dozens of new recordings, including brand new, never released before material and re-recordings of old songs.

As one of the most recorded songwriters in Latin music and one of its biggest stars, the potential for those works is immense.

“We have a lot of material in different stages,” says Victor Gonzalez, president of Virgin Music Latin America & Iberian Peninsula.

This includes a third duets album (Gabriel recorded two prior to his death, both of them hits) featuring six or seven tracks with artists including Mon LaFerte and Gloria Trevi; additional, posthumous duets (which will use Gabriel’s previously-recorded vocals) will be included as well.

Gabriel died of a heart attack the morning of August 28, 2016 in Los Angeles as he readied for a flight to El Paso following a show at the Forum.

At the time, the 66-year-old singer and icon was at the apex of his career, enjoying a spectacular second act. He was in the midst of the U.S. leg of his MeXXico Es Todos tour, a 22-city arena trek that had him playing 360 stages to accommodate sold-out crowds.

He ranked at No. 18 on Billboard’s 2015 Money Makers list (just below Ed Sheeran and just above Florida Georgia Line).

He also scored the year’s highest-grossing Latin tour (bringing in $31.8 million) as well as the year’s top-selling Latin album, Los Duo.

The week before his death, his latest album, Vestido de Etiqueta: Por Eduardo Magallanes, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart. A TV series based on his life was slated for the fall.

“He was at the height of his career. He was happy, happy, happy,” says González. “He was recording while he was on tour and because he was so healthy, we were able to re-record old songs and new material, and none of that saw the light of day, because he died.”

It was Jesus López who signed Gabriel to a 10-album contract with Universal Music Mexico in 2008, in a deal with a long back story. Gabriel signed his first label deal in 1971 with RCA in Mexico when he was 21 years old, at a time when publishing was typically included in recording deals.

In 1986 — after he became a major star and RCA was acquired by BMG — he famously stopped recording for seven years in protest of his original deal, under which the label owned not only his recording masters but also his songs.

Gabriel’s recorded music output resumed in 1994 when Jesús López (now the chairman of Universal Music Latin America/Iberian Penninsula), who had just been named president of BMG Latin, personally met with Gabriel and convinced him to record again after agreeing to give him ownership of his songs.

The first album under that arrangement was 1994’s Gracias por Esperar.

Gabriel’s recording deal eventually went to Sony after it acquired BMG; when that deal expired in 2008, González approached him with a new proposal.

“I suggested 10 albums that included a live album, a banda album, duets albums and three albums of new material,” says González. The first album under the deal — Juan Gabriel — was released in 2010. In an innovative twist, Universal agreed to let Gabriel retain ownership of his masters.

After Gabriel died in 2016, it took several years to untangle his affairs. Now, with his son Iván Aguilera the sole beneficiary of his estate, his legacy is ready to move on.

In 2020, Aguilera announced a partnership with Jampol Artist Management (JAM), a company that specializes in managing, preserving and developing artist estates whose clients include the estates of Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin. Gabriel is their first Latin client, but he fit the company’s philosophy, says founder and CEO Jeff Jampol.

“When we talk about these huge legacies, they’re important not only artistically, of course, but sociologically and culturally and they mean a lot to a lot of people. Successful artists have magic,” says Jampol. “Juan Gabriel stands for something. The secret to my business is figuring out what that magic is and exposing it credibly and authentically.”

In 2020, Jampol and Gabriel’s estate — working with Melinda Zanoni of Apollo Sports & Entertainment Law Group and business manager Louis Barajas of the firm LAB — announced plans to release a documentary filmed during Gabriel’s last concert on Aug. 26, 2016, in Los Angeles, as well as a merchandise line, television series, feature film, theatrical stage show, books, tribute shows and a wax figure with Museo de Cera.

But having new music and new recordings to draw from pushes the value of the new deal to another level. Says Jampol, “These two deals [recorded music and publishing] combined are probably one of the highest valued deals I’ve made in the history of the company.”

In terms of publishing alone, “Juan Gabriel is one of the most important songwriters and artists in Latin music history,” says Alexandra Lioutikoff, president of UMPG for Latin America and U.S. Latin. “His catalog of music across 45 years is proof that great songs stand the test of time and continue to live on. Juan Gabriel is one of the strongest examples of a Latin music legacy catalog that is thriving through generations of fans around the world.”

For González, the deal will bring to life music he was personally close to.

“He was in the middle of a very creative period [when he died],” he says. “I spent some time with him in Playa del Carmen, for example, where he had a recording studio in his home, and he’d wake up and say, ‘I want to record!’ I lived it with him. I saw the day to day. He’d write and say, ‘Come and see me!’”

The 47-year-old Colombian pop singer/songwriter is reversing roles in the music video for her latest single “En Mis Tacones.”

On her latest track, her first release since signing an exclusive record deal with BMG, Fanny Lu recruited Mexican singer Paty Cantú and California-native rising artist Melanie Pfirrman, resulting in a new female empowerment anthem.

Fusing urban, vallenatocumbia and pop rhythms, the bilingual “En Mis Tacones” conveys the message that women are hard-working and independent, among many things.

And with lyrics like “put yourself in my heels so that you understand and that it is clear who is in control,” Fanny says she wanted to pay homage to an important part of femininity: the heels.

“It’s an invitation to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, especially men in the shoes of women,” Fanny expresses. “But it is also an important message for all human beings to have compassion and be understanding of others. There’s nothing more appropriate than putting yourself in each other’s shoes!”

Fanny Lu’s reference to heels isn’t just metaphorical, but also literal in the video.

Unlike the song, which was recorded in 2019, the music video, directed by Iñigo Abaroa and produced by Miguel Ferrer of Magic Films, was filmed during the coronavirus pandemic.

The innovative production shows all three artists using a game controller to control with their male counterparts, who are trying to balance themselves in heels. 

Toward the end, the three men finally understand the powerful message of “En Mis Tacones” and can easily manage walking, modeling and even dancing in a pair of pumps.

To make the video come to life during the quarantine period, Magic Films sent professional equipment, including lights, props, a smoke machine and more, to each artist and directed their shots via video calls.

For the rest of the year, Fanny Lú tells Billboard she’s going to focus on creating more empowering music for women, working on special collaborations, and helping her son kick off his music career as well.

Aloe Blacc Signs New Partnership with BMG, Releases New Song “I Do”

The 41-year-old Panamanian American has signed a new global recordings partnership with BMG.

Blacc, whose distinctive vocals can be heard on the late Avicii‘s soaring hit “Wake Me Up,” paired the announcement with the release of a Valentine’s Daysingle, “I Do.” 

Inspired by his decade-long marriage to Australian recording artist Maya Jupiter, “I Do” is the first single from Blacc’s upcoming fourth album, to be released later this year via BMG.

“Aloe is an exceptional artist and creative, who’s got the talent to carry people away with his voice and diverse musical style,” said Dominique Casimir, EVP Continental Europe Repertoire and Marketing, BMG. “We are immensely proud to release his new album and are honored that he has placed his trust in BMG.”

To mark their anniversary, Blacc surprised his wife with a renewal of their vows ceremony, which will be seen in behind-the-scenes cuts for his music video.

Blacc released his debut solo album Shine Through in 2006 and follow-up Good Things in 2010. Boosted by the global chart success of breakthrough hit “I Need a Dollar” – the theme song to HBO‘s How To Make It In America – Good Thingsreached gold sales status in several global markets. His third album, Lift Your Spirit, debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200albums chart, earning a Grammy Award nomination for best R&B album.

Aside from his solo projects, Blacc is widely known for his collaborations with the late Avicii (born Tim Bergling), co-writing and performing vocals on 2013’s “Wake Me Up” and on 2019’s “SOS,” the first single following Bergling’s passing.

The wide-ranging deal includes a new recording agreement for her upcoming studio album, a book deal to publish her autobiography, a first-look documentary film agreement and development deal with her multi-platform company, Endertainment

“Over the years, my career has diversified into multiple branches of entertainment and different markets within the music industry and with my new BMG family, I feel I found a home that not only sees the world of music and music entertainment from a global perspective, but also, like me, believes that the world is unlimited and that makes me feel free to create and be the best I can in all the things I love to do…BMG lets me be me…,” said the “Despacito” co-writer about the deal.

Having written hit singles for Gloria Trevi(“Cinco Minutos“), Chayanne(“Candela“) and Ednita Nazario(“La Pasión Tiene Memoria“), Ender’s music career spans over 27 years.

Along with Luis Fonsiand Daddy Yankee, Ender co-wrote chart-topping “Despacito” which spent 16 weeks atop the BillboardHot 100. The song’s Grammy nomination for Song of the Year earned Ender the honor of being the first Latina to earn a nod in that category.

In 2017, Ender became the youngest inductee into the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame.
