Becky G Joins United Nations Human Rights “We All Rise” Campaign on International Women’s Day

The 24-year-old Mexican American bilingual rapper/singer has joined the United Nations Human Rights on International Women’s Day (March 8) for the “We All Rise” campaign for gender equality during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

Becky G appears in the campaign alongside Celine Dion, Cher, Cyndi Lauper and many most stars.

The artists — joined by activist/tennis legend Billie Jean King, TV personality Padma Lakshmi, actors Renée Elise Goldsberry and Terry Crews, WNBA champ Sue Bird and singer/songwriter Amanda Shires — have partnered with the UN to select the 2021 We All Rise female empowerment anthem “Together We Are Stronger.”

The soaring song features KT Tunstall, Lolo, Devyn Lorea and Nikki Vianna, and was written by written by Morgan Dorr, Greg Hansen and Lorea, with production by the Highland Park Collective.

We All Rise aims to reach more than 150 million with its first effort, described in a release as a “celebrity-driven social media campaign promoting gender equality as a fundamental human right essential to achieving a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.” The coalition of celebrities and advocates participating in the effort also includes LeAnn Rimes, Dionne Warwick, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Liv Warfield, Blair Underwood, Gloria Estefan, Naomi Campbell, Bridget Moynihan, and Debbie Allen.

“Gender equality is one of the fundamental values of the United Nations and lies at the very heart of human rights,” said Veronica Birga, chief of the Women’s Rights and Gender Section of United Nations Human Rights in a statement. “That is why we are the global partner of WE ALL RISE, an exciting new initiative committed to promoting, protecting, and advancing the human rights of all women and girls around the world. Because gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, it is essential to achieving a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.”

The effort is one of many across the music world on Monday to celebrate International Women’s Day, including a playlist curated by BLACKPINK‘s Rosé and a remake of “I’m Every Woman” by Chaka Khan and Idina Menzel, among other efforts.

“Gender equality and the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women are fundamental human rights and core values of the United Nations,” added Trish Golden, president of We All Rise. “Together with our Global Partner, United Nations Human Rights, We All Rise is dedicated to promoting gender equality around the world and the human rights of women and girls, in all their diversity. When we support women’s rights, We All Rise together.”

The video for the inspiring “Together We Are Stronger” features images of women from around the world marching for equality and securing a future for girls and young women where they can achieve their goals.

Daphne Rubin-Vega to Appear on the CW’s Upcoming “Riverdale” Off-Shoot “Katy Keene”

The 49-year-old Panamanian actress, singer and dancerwill appear in a major recurring role on the CW’s upcoming Riverdale off-shoot Katy Keene.

Rubin-Vega, the original Mimi in both the Off Broadway and Broadway landmark productions of Rentand coming off the Lin Manuel/Warner Bros. feature In The Heights, will play Luisa, the mother of a central character, Katy’s roomie Jorge/Ginger. She’s described as adoting mother, a former Rockette and now owner, with her husband Luis, of a bodega in Washington Heights. She supports her son Jorge’s ambitions to make it on Broadway, but doesn’t know about his drag alter ego, Ginger.

The Jorge/Ginger character, played by Jonny Beauchamp, is a central figure on the series and one of at least two characters expected to perform musical numbers on every episode.

In the Katy Keeneseries pilot, recently screened at the Tribeca TV Festival, Jorge is a Broadway hopeful by day and, as Ginger, a drag performer by night. When his Broadway dreams begin to fizzle – he is, he says, “too gay for Broadway” – he’s encouraged by Katy to make the audition rounds not as Jorge but as Ginger.

Rubin-Vega was Tony-nominated in 1996 for originating on Broadway the lead female role of Mimi in Jonathan Larson’s Rent, which she’d debuted earlier that year Off Broadway to great acclaim. The actress received another Tony nomination in 2004 as featured actress in a play for Anna In The Tropics.

Her more recent credits include Broadway’s A Streetcar Named Desire opposite Blair UnderwoodNBC’s Smash and Netflix’s Tales Of The City. Ruben-Vega was among the original Rentperformers who made an end-of-show appearance on Fox’s Rent: Live last January.

Morales Lands Presidential Role on HBO’s Pilot “The Brink”

The 51-year-old Puerto Rican actor has landed a co-starring a role in the HBO pilot The Brink.

Directed by Jay Roach from a script by Roberto Benabib and Kim Benabib, The Brink is an epic dark comedy focusing on a geopolitical crisis and its effect on three disparate and desperate men: U.S. Secretary of State Walter Hollander (Tim Robbins); Alex Coppins (Jack Black), a lowly Foreign Service officer; and Zeke Callahan (Pablo Schreiber), an ace Navy fighter pilot.

Morales will portray Julian Navarro, the President of the United States.

While the U.S. is yet to elect a Hispanic president, that has been a popular trend on television that has included Jimmy Smits’ Matt Santos on The West Wing and Blair Underwood’s Elias Martinez on The Event.

Morales, who most recently co-starred on the second season of Starz’s Magic City, recently wrapped a supporting role in George Lopez’s feature La Vida Robot and has a recurring role on CBSCriminal Minds.

Thorne Feeds the Homeless for Thanksgiving…

Bella Thorne is giving back to the community this Thanksgiving…

The 15-year-old part-Cuban-American actress served food to the homeless at the Los Angeles Mission in California on Wednesday.

Thorne, who joined other celebrities like Tatyana Ali, Neil Patrick Harris and Matthew Bomer, enthusiastically did her job as food servants at the event while donning a red apron.

For the occasion Thorne, who arrived with boyfriend Tristan Klier in tow, wore matching pink pants and brown shoes. Expressing her excitement, she posted a picture of her and Tristan posing in a food booth.

“Team work! I’m the plate server.. He’s the plate runner! @tristanklier89 Los Angeles mission,” tweeted the Shake It Up star.

Other volunteers included Eileen Davidson, Malin Akerman, Blair Underwood, Kirk Douglas and Zachary Levi.

Los Angeles Mission is a charity organization, which aims to provide support, hope, and opportunity to the ones who need them. It has a mission to change the lives of poor people. The charity work also aims to protect homeless people.

Rubin-Vega to Appear on NBC’s “Smash”

Daphne Rubin-Vega will be having a smashing year on television in 2013…

The 42-year-old Panamanian actress and two-time Tony Award-nominated actress/singer will be appearing on the second season of NBC’s musical drama Smash, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Rubin-Vega—who played a heroin-addicted 19-year-old with HIV who works as an exotic dancer in the original Broadway production of Rent—will play a Broadway publicist on the series.

Rubin-Vega began her musical career as the lead singer of Pajama Party, a Latin freestyle group that placed three songs on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1989 and 1990.

She most recently appeared on Broadway in a new revival of Tennessee Williams A Streetcar Named Desire, in which she played the role of Stella Kowalski opposite Blair Underwood as Stanley.

The second season of Smash returns in early 2013.
