Thorne to Star in “Shovel Buddies”

Grab a shovel! Bella Thorne’s digging deep for a new role…

The 17-year-old half-Cuban American actress-singer, who stars in MTV’s new series Scream, has been cast opposite Kian Lawley and Alex Neustaedter in Shovel Buddies, the 2013 Black List script by Jason Mark Hellerman that AwesomenessTV has set up with Film 360.

The film, which has just started shooting in California, centers on four teens who must conquer a “shovel list” of activities left behind by their recently deceased friend.

Anton Starkman, Philip Labes and James C. Burns co-star and English duo Si & Ad are directing.

A day-and-date theatrical and VOD release is planned for the latest full-length pic being created by DreamWorks Animation-owned Awesomeness, which just inked a multi-picture deal with YouTube as it ramps up its feature film business.

Robert Rodriguez has a new quest…

The 46-year-old Mexican American filmmaker is set to direct Warner Bros. Jonny Quest, film adaptation of the Hanna-Barbera boy hero.

The studio is hoping to create a live-action family adventure franchise.

Rodriguez and Terry Rossio are rewriting a Dan Mazeau draft that made the Black List.

Jonny is the kid who accompanied his scientist father, their bodyguard Race Bannon and Jonny’s pal Hadji on a series of global adventures that always involved some evil conspiracy that forced Jonny to work his way out of danger. Created and designed by Doug Wildey, Jonny Quest was wildly popular when first introduced. The series ran for a season on ABC primetime in 1964 and lives forever in reruns, an updated animated series, and in comic book and merchandising incarnations.

Warner Bros, which got the Hanna-Barbera catalog in the Turner acquisition, has tried numerous times to get this right. Richard Donner took a shot at it; Peter Segal did too. A version had Zac Efron poised to play the title character and Dwayne Johnson to play Bannon.

Rodriguez previous has success with the kid empowerment theme with his own popular Spy Kids films.

Justice to Star in the Female-Centric Comedy “The Outskirts”

Victoria Justice is headed to the outskirts… 

The 21-year-old half-Puerto Rican actress/singer, who will topline MTV’s new drama Eye Candy, will star in the female-centric comedy The Outskirts alongside Eden Sher.

Directed by Peter Hutchings for BCDF Pictures, the film tells the story of two best friends who, having suffered years of torment under the thumb of their high school’s alpha female, decide to unite their school’s other outcasts to start a social revolution.

The screenplay was written by Dominique Ferrari and Suzanne Wrubel and appeared on last year’s Black List.

In addition to Justice and Sher, the film’s cast also includes Ashley Rickards, Peyton List, Avan Jogia, Claudia Lee, Katie Chang and William Peltz.

Shooting will begin this summer in New York.
