Cruz’s “Orange Is the New Black” Named Best Comedy Ensemble at the SAG Awards

Life’s still a SAG (award) for Jackie Cruz…

The 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards recognized the best performances for the year in both television and film on Sunday night, with the 30-year-old Dominican-American actress, musician and former model’s Orange Is the New Black taking home the best ensemble in a comedy series award.

Orange Is the New Black won the comedy ensemble trophy for the third straight year.

The prison comedy-drama series topped The Big Bang Theory, Black-ish, Veep, and Modern Family, which won the award for four years before Orange Is the New Black started its streak.

In addition to Cruz, Latina actresses in the ensemble cast include Laura Gómez, Diane Guerrero, Selenis Leyva, Dascha Polanco and Elizabeth Rodriguez.

The awards were handed out at the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles.

Cannavale to Appear in “Variety Studio: Actors on Actors” Series

Bobby Cannavale is ready to talk shop…

Variety and PBS SoCal have announced the line-up for the fourth installment of their awards season series “Variety Studio: Actors on Actors,” with the 45-year-old half-Cuban American actor making the final cut.

Available to stream on Variety.com, the new “Actors on Actors” season will feature one-on-one discussions between this year’s Emmy contenders.

Along with Cannavale, who stars in HBO’s Vinyl, this year’s conversations, which will be printed in the June 7 issue of Variety, will also include Aziz Ansari (“Master of None”), Rachel Bloom (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”), Emilia Clarke (“Game of Thrones”), Jamie Lee Curtis (“Scream Queens”), Kirsten Dunst (“Fargo”), Jay Duplass (“Transparent”), Billy Eichner (“Difficult People”), Sam Heughan (“Outlander”), Tom Hiddleston (“The Night Manager”), Felicity Huffman (“American Crime”), Lady Gaga (“American Horror Story”), Jennifer Lopez (“Shades of Blue”), Rob Lowe (“Grinder”), Rami Malek (“Mr. Robot”), Thomas Middleditch (“Silicon Valley”), Aaron Paul (“The Path”), Sarah Paulson (“American Crime Story”), Krysten Ritter (“Jessica Jones”), Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-ish”), Patrick Stewart (“Blunt Talk”), John Travolta (“American Crime Story”), Courtney B. “Variety is thrilled to cover the best actors on television in this season’s ‘Actors on Actors’ for PBS stations,” said Variety‘s executive TV editor Debra Birnbaum in a statement. “This season’s lineup includes actors from some of the top new television programs and showcases the wide diversity of roles for actors on broadcast, cable and streaming platforms.”

PBS SoCal will premiere the segment in two episodes, one on June 12 and the other on June 19.

“Through their craft, the actors interviewed on ‘Actors on Actors’ effortlessly spark our imaginations and take us to new places,” said PBS SoCal president and CEO Andy Russell in a statement. “Through this partnership with Variety we are pleased to enhance the experience of fans of great television – providing them greater insight into the people who bring them their favorite dramas, comedies and more.”

Derbez Signs First Look Deal with Universal Television

Eugenio Derbez is ready to crossover into English-language television.

The 54-year-old Mexican comedian, writer and director and his 3Pas producing partner Ben Odell have signed a first-look deal with Universal Television and sold their first two English-language comedies.

Derbez may be best known for Instructions Not Included, the highest-grossing Spanish-language film of all time, but he got his start in television.

The UTV deal marks Derbez’s first season developing English-language television, though both he and Odell have experience in the Spanish-language market.

Early in his career, Odell created and wrote some of Colombia’s highest-rated series; Derbez wrote, produced, directed and starred in numerous Spanish-language comedies and dramas for Televisa.

Derbez’s series, which have aired on Univision, have helped him amass a major stateside following that includes nearly 18 million fans on Facebook and Twitter.

As part of their stateside push, ABC is developing single-camera comedy Don’t Judge Me, which is inspired by Derbez’s life and revolves around Ignacio Galves, who is raising three kids with three ex-wives in a story of a man caught between his parenting style, pleasing the mothers of the kids and making room for the new woman in his life. Derbez will exec produce the comedy, which will be written by Aseem Batra and Eduardo Cisneros. Cisneros, who will reunite with frequent collaborator Derbez on the comedy, will co-exec produce.

NBC, meanwhile, has picked up script The Great Brown Hope, a single-camera comedy created by Isaac Gonzalez (Bordertown). The comedy centers on Nick, who after he’s kicked out of UCLA following a legendary semester, moves back home with his smothering, working-class — and very disappointed — Mexican family in Logan Heights, San Diego.

Gonzalez will also be credited as a co-EP on the comedy, which is also exec produced by Derbez and Odell.

Both projects hail from Universal Television.

The comedies come as diversity continues to be a high priority for broadcast networks, who this development season have put a focus on family comedy. “We’re all trying to figure out the family dynamic that’s not currently on the air,” ABC Studios executive vice president Patrick Moran told THR, noting that his studio in particular was looking for diverse voices — particularly Latino.

For its part, ABC recently picked up a family comedy inspired by the life of comedian Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias (Cristela) as the network has found success with such diverse family fare as Black-ish, Fresh Off the Boat, Dr. Ken as well as veteran The Goldbergs.

In Derbez, the networks have a brand star with a built-in following attached, which — should either comedy move forward — would give either network a leg up with marketing and public awareness. (ABC, for its part, found success with Pryanka Chopra and Quantico, utilizing her massive social media fan base to help launch the series as one of the few breakouts of the 2015-16 broadcast season.)

Louis C.K. Earns Six Primetime Emmy Award Nominations

Louis C.K. continues to be an Emmy darling…

The nominations for the 2015 Primetime Emmy Awards have been announced, with the 47-year-old Mexican American stand up comedian, actor, writer, producer, director and editor earning six nominations.

Louis C.K., who holds the record for most Emmy nominations in a single year (9), is nominated in the Lead Actor, Comedy category for the fifth straight year for his starring role on FX’s Louie. He’ll face off against Black-ish’s Anthony Anderson, Episodes’ Matt LeBlanc, House of Lies’ Don Cheadle, The Last Man On Earth’s Will Forte, Shameless’ William H. Macy and Transparent’s Jeffrey Tambor.

Louis C.K., the creator, star, writer, director and executive producer of Louie, is also nominated in the Writing for a Comedy Series and Directing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Comedy Series categories for his behind-the-scenes work on the series.

Additionally, Louis C.K. earned his third consecutive nomination in the Guest Actor, Comedy series for his guest hosting work on Saturday Night Live.

His final nomination comes in the Writing for a Variety Special for his comedy special Louis C.K.: Live At The Comedy Store.

But Louis C.K. isn’t the only Latino nominee this year…

Former gang member turned rising actor Richard Cabral earned his first-ever Emmy nomination.

The Latino actor earned his nod in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category for his work on work on American Crime.

Jane the Virgin’s velvety-voiced narrator Anthony Mendez also earned his first nomination.

The bilingual actor, who studied cemetery architecture in college and worked in radio production before pursuing a voice-over acting career, earned his nom in the Outstanding Narrator category. He’ll face off against Neil deGrasse Tyson, Miranda Richardson, Peter Coyote and Henry Strozier.

Andy Samberg is set to host the Primetime Emmy Awards telecast, which will air live Sept. 20 on Fox. The three-hour ceremony will originate from the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles.

Gomez Receives Four Teen Choice Award Nods in Second Wave of Nominations

The second wave of Teen Choice Awards nominations have been revealed, with the 22-year-old half-Mexican American singer/actress leading the pack of Latino nominees with four nods.

Gomez, who took home the Ultimate Choice award at last year’s show, is nominated in the Choice Summer Music Star category. She’s up against Demi Lovato, a two-time nominee this round, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna and Taylor Swift.

Additionally, Gomez is nominated for Choice Break-Up Song for her Justin Bieber-inspired single “The Heart Wants What It Wants,” Choice Party Song for “I Want You to Know,” her collaboration with Zedd, Choice Summer Song for her latest single “Good For You,” featuring A$AP Rocky.

Meanwhile, Empire star Jussie Smollett has earned three nominations. The 32-year-old Brazilian American actor/singer is up for Choice TV: Breakout Star, facing off against Jane the Virgin star Gina Rodriguez, a two-time nominee, as well as Empire co-star Bryshere “Yazz” Gray, The Flash’s Grant Gustin and Candice Patton, and Black-ish’s Yara Shahidi.

Other nominees include Fifth Harmony (3), Bruno Mars (2), Sofia Vergara (2), Tyler Posey (1), Bella Thorne (1), Michelle Rodriguez (1), Victor Espinoza (1) and Bella Twins (1).

The show will air live Aug. 16 at 8 p.m. on Fox. Voting for Wave Two is open via Facebook, Instagram, TeenChoice.com and Twitter.

From now through July 24 at 12 p.m. PT, fans can vote once each day per category, per platform user ID, for the Wave Two nominees. Teen Choice Awards host(s), performers, presenters and additional nominees will be announced at a later date.

Iconic TV Sitcom “One Day at a Time” to Get a Latino Makeover

Iconic television series One Day at a Time may be getting a Latino makeover…

Norman Lear, who developed the sitcom, is looking to revive the series with an all Latino cast, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

One Day at a Time, which aired on CBS from December 1975 to May 1984, starred Bonnie Franklin as Ann Romano, a divorced mother who moves to Indianapolis with her two teenage daughters, Julie and Barbara Cooper (Mackenzie Phillips, Valerie Bertinelli) to an apartment building in Indianapolis where the family becomes friendly with the super, Schneider (Pat Harrington).

As first reported by TV Insider, the potential series would be produced by Sony Pictures Television, whose T.A.T. Communications and Embassy Television produced the original.

The new comedy would be an English-language remake and be a co-production of SPT and Televisa USA. No deals are currently in place and the project is in the early stage of discussion.

The series was hailed for its portrayal of a divorced woman and its ability to tackle series issues including feminism.

Lear produced the series, which was created by Whitney Blake and Allan Manings, a husband-and-wife duo who based the show on the former’s life as a single mother raising her daughter — actress Meredith Baxter.

Sony previously attempted a Spanish-language take on One Day at a Time with Telemundo in the 1990s. Lear has also considered putting a new spin on All in the Family as well.

Plans for a Latino-focused One Day at a Time revival come as more and more broadcast networks are focused on creating diverse programming that better reflects society. ABC has found success with Latino family comedy Cristela as well as Black-ish and its upcoming Asian-American half hour Fresh Off the Boat is already generating positive reviews.

Maldonado Lands Recurring Role on ABC’s “Black-ish”

Allen Maldonado is ready to assist…

The 31-year-old half-Puerto Rican actor has landed a recurring role in ABC’s breakout comedy series Black-ish.

Maldonado will portray Curtis, the new assistant to Andre “Dre” Johnson’s (played by Anthony Anderson).

Created and executive produced by Kenya Barris, Black-ish centers on an African-American family man who struggles to gain a sense of cultural identity while raising his kids in a predominantly white, upper-middle-class neighborhood.

Maldonado, best known for starring as Honey Nutz on the television series You’re the Worst, appears alongside Jennifer Aniston in the feature film Cake. His upcoming projects include Forest Whitaker’s Dope and Ice Cube’s N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton.

He also had a recent guest turn on Adult Swim’s Black Jesus.

Ana Ortiz is bringing a little deviousness to ABC…

The 43-year-old half-Puerto Rican actress and Devious Maids star has booked a a pivotal guest-starring role on ABC’s Black-ish, starring Anthony Anderson.

Appearing in the 11th show’s episode airing this coming December, Ortiz will play Angelica Rodriguez, one of Dre’s (Anderson) co-workers who becomes an adversary at their company’s office Christmas party.

Jenifer Lewis is also set to appear in the episode as Dre’s mother, Ruby.

Ortiz, who co-starred in ABC dramedy Ugly Betty from 2006-10, has dropped by several of the network’s dramas since then — Revenge (2013) and more recently, How to Get Away With Murder.

Ortiz’s Devious Maids, which Lifetime renewed in September, returns for its third season in 2015.

Black-ish airs 9:30 pm ET on Wednesdays on ABC.
