Colman Domingo Wins Outstanding Lead Performance Prize at Gotham Awards for “Sing Sing”

Colman Domingo has extra reason to sing (sing)

The 2024 Gotham Awards were doled out on Monday night at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, with the 55-year-old Emmy-winning Belizean-Guatemalan American actor and activist taking home one of the top prizes.

Colman DomingoDomingo won the award for Outstanding Lead Performance for his critically acclaimed performance as John “Divine G” Whitfield in A24’s Sing Sing.

Directed by Greg Kwedar, who co-wrote the screenplay and co-produced the film with Clint Bentley, Sing Sing is based on the real-life Rehabilitation Through the Arts program at Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison. It centers on a group of incarcerated men involved in the creation of theatrical stage shows through the program

Each category for nominations is decided by a different jury of critics, journalists and other industry professionals, and screening links must be provided to all its jury members. An entirely different group determines the winners. That’s in contrast with the Oscars or the BAFTAs, which are determined by actors, filmmakers and other artists who are in the entertainment industry.

Apple TV+ Releases Official Trailer for Alfonso Cuarón’s Limited Series “Disclaimer”

Alfonso Cuarón is issuing a special disclaimer

Apple TV+ has released the official trailer for Disclaimer, the psychological thriller written and directed by the 62-year-old Mexican Oscar-winning filmmaker.

Alfonso CuarónBased on the best-selling novel of the same name by Renée Knight, the series stars

Cate Blanchett as journalist Catherine Ravenscroft, who built her reputation revealing the misdeeds and transgressions of others. When she receives a novel from an unknown author, she is horrified to realize she is now the main character in a story that exposes her darkest secrets, per the synopsis.

In the trailer, Blanchett’s Catherine begins to unravel, with Kevin Kline’s Stephen warning her, “The world needs to know who Catherine Ravenscroft really is. The world needs to know the truth.”

The series also stars Sacha Baron Cohen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Lesley Manville, Louis Partridge, Leila George, Hoyeon, and features Indira Varma as the narrator.

The limited series premieres globally on October 11 with the first two episodes, followed by new episodes every Friday through November 15.

Cuarón executive produces for Esperanto Filmoj.

Emmanuel Lubezki and Academy Award nominee Bruno Delbonnel serve as directors of photography. The score is composed by Finneas O’Connell.

Cuaron’s accolades include five Academy Awards, seven BAFTA Awards and three Golden Globe Awards.

Ariana DeBose to Star in Universal Pictures’ “With Love”

Ariana DeBose is embracing a new love

The 33-year-old half-Puerto Rican Oscar-winning actress, singer and dancer will star in 87North’s With Love for Universal Pictures.

Ariana DeBose,DeBose will star opposite Ke Huy Quan in the film, which Universal Pictures will release in wide release on Friday, February 7, 2025.

The film is written by Josh Stoddard, Luke Passmore and Matthew Murray. Guy Danella is also producing for 87North.

Making his feature film directing debut on With Love is acclaimed veteran stunt coordinator and fight coordinator Jonathan Eusebio.

Plot details are being kept under wraps.

DeBose’s previous credits include her star-making role in West Side Story, which earned her an Oscar, Golden Globe, SAG Award and BAFTA, as well as Prom, Schmigadoon! and Wish.

Jacob Elordi Earns Career-First BAFTA Film Awards Nod for “Saltburn” Performance

Jacob Elordi has another chance to win at this year’s BAFTAs.

The 26-year-old half-Spanish Australian actor and Saltburn star, a previously revealed nominee for the BAFTA Film Rising Star Award, has earned his first-ever BAFTA nomination from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

Jacob Elordi,Elordi earned the nod in the Supporting Actor category for his work in Saltburn.

But he isn’t the only Latinx actor to earn a first BAFTA nod.

Colman Domingo is nominated in the Leading Actor category.

The 54-year-old Belizean-Guatemalan American actor is nominated for his performance in Netflix’s Rustin.

Rodrigo Prieto is nominated in the Cinematography category.

The 58-year-old Mexican cinematographer, previously nominated three times for a BAFTA, earned this year’s nod for his work on Killers of the Flower Moon.

J.A. Bayona, the Spanish filmmaker, is nominated in the Film Not in the English Language category for directing Society of the Snow. It’s his first BAFTA nod.

Winners will be announced at the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards ceremony, hosted by actor David Tennant on February 18 at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London.

Jacob Elordi Nominated for BAFTA Film Rising Star Award

Jacob Elordi’s meteoric rise continues…

The 26-year-old half-Spanish Australian actor has been nominated for the prestigious BAFTA Film Rising Star Award 2024 by the by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

Jacob Elordi,Following his breakout roles in The Kissing Booth film trilogy and Euphoria, Elordi led Saltburn opposite Barry Keoghan, Amazon Prime Video’s BAFTA-nominated psychological drama from Emerald Fennell. He also starred as Elvis Presley in the biographical film Priscilla.

Elordi will compete against Bridgerton star Phoebe DynevorThe Bear’s Ayo Edebiri, Mia McKenna-Bruce, who led hit British indie film How to Have Sexand Talk to Me’s Sophie Wilde.

Nominees were announced by actor and producer Stephen Graham at a press conference hosted by film critic and radio host, Ali Plumb.

The jury, chaired by Anna Higgs, BAFTA Film Committee Chair, featured actors Daisy Edgar-JonesṢọpẹ́ Dìrísù and Himesh Patel, casting directors Lucy Bevan (The Batman), and Nina Gold (Game of Thrones), film producer Adam Ackland (The End We Start From) alongside leading industry specialists.

Last year’s gong was won by Sex Education’s Emma Mackey and previous winners include Letitia Wright, Daniel Kaluuya, John Boyega and Tom Holland.

“These remarkable individuals represent what BAFTA and the EE Rising Star Award stand for as the future of the film industry, embodying innovation, dedication, and a commitment to storytelling that captivates audiences worldwide,” said BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip.

Host Ali Plumb added: “Each rising star talent deserves this spotlight, having provided extraordinary performances serving as inspiration for the next generation.”

Camila Márdila to Star in Netflix’s Highly-Anticipated Biopic Series “Senna”

Camila Márdila is preparing for life in the fast lane

The 35-year-old Brazilian actress will star in Netflix’s highly-anticipated Senna biopic series.

Camila Márdila Over the course of six episodes, Senna will, for the first time, depict the journey of overcoming obstacles, ups and downs, joys, and sorrows of Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna da Silva, a Brazilian racing driver who won the F1 World Drivers’ Championship in 1988, 1990 and 1991.

Senna is one of three Formula One drivers from Brazil to win the World Championship and won 41 Grand Prixs and 65 pole positions, with the latter being the record until 2006.

Ayrton Senna He died tragically in Italy during the San Marino Grand Prix.

A 2010 documentary from Asif Kapadia on the sports star won Best Documentary at the BAFTAs.

Mardilla, who joins previously-announced lead Gabriel Leone and Kaya Scodelario, is part of a roster of new cast additions that includes Alice Wegmann, Christian Malheiros, Gabriel Louchard, Hugo Bonemer, Julia Foti, Marco Ricca, Pâmela Tomé and Susana Ribeiro.

Other previously announced cast members include Matt MellaArnaud Viard, Joe Hurst, Johannes Heinrichs, Keisuke Hoashi, Leon Ockenden, Patrick Kennedy, Richard Clothier, Steven Mackintosh and Tom Mannion .

The large-scale production and some of the actors have just arrived in Brazil, where filming is taking place in São Paulo and Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro.

The Gullane-produced miniseries, one of Netflix’s biggest in Brazil, has already filmed in Argentina and Uruguay and will proceed to the UK after completing filming in the country.

Vicente Amorim is showrunner and the director is Julia Rezende.

Gustavo Santaolalla to Receive Lifetime Achievement Trustees Award During Latin Grammys

Gustavo Santaolalla is set to receive a special honor…

The 71-year-old Argentine musician and composer will receive the Lifetime Achievement Trustees Award in November.

Gustavo SantaolallaThe award honors his music legacy and is conferred on individuals who have made significant contributions to Latin music during their careers in ways other than performance.

Santaolalla has received two Academy Awards, two BAFTA awards, two Grammys, 19 Latin Grammys, and is an Emmy nominee for his work on HBO’s “The Last of Us.”

All of the hardware is even more amazing when you consider Santaolalla can’t read or write music.

He will receive the honor during a private event as part of Latin GRAMMy Week on Sunday, November 12, 2023, in the Teatro Lope de Vega in Sevilla, Spain.

In addition, Santaolalla will perform at Eric Clapton’s 2023 Crossroads Festival in Los Angeles.

The event is being held September 24 at the Crypto Arena. Clapton gathers past, present and the future of guitar music onto the stage to benefit the Crossroads Centre in Antigua, a treatment and education facility founded by Clapton for chemically dependent persons.

Santaolalla scored the original video game for “The Last of Us” and its 2020 sequel, as well as the HBO series.

In addition to his video game and television work, he has collaborated with high profile filmmakers like Alejandro González Iñárritu (Amores Perros21 GramsBabel), Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries, On The Road) and Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain).

Ariana DeBose is returning to the Oscars stage…

The 32-year-old half-Puerto Rican actress/singer, who made Oscar history with her Best Supporting Actress win last year, will be a presenter at this year’s Academy Awards show.

Ariana DeBose,No doubt DeBose will present the award for Best Supporting Actor per long standing Academy tradition.

The announcement comes on the heels of DeBose’s much talked about rap tribute to BAFTA’s actress nominees at the BAFTA awards ceremony.

CODA Best Supporting Actor winner Troy Kotsur will also return to the Dolby Theatre, this time as a presenter.

Last year’s Live Action Short Oscar winner Riz Ahmed, Emily Blunt, eight-time nominee Glenn Close, Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly, past Honorary Oscar recipient Samuel L. JacksonDwayne Johnson, Creed III’s Michael B. Jordan and Jonathan Majors, Melissa McCarthy, Janelle Monáe, Deepika Padukone, Oscar winner Questlove, Zoe Saldaña and Donnie Yen will all be onstage at the Oscars.

Final Oscar balloting is underway. The 9,579 eligible Academy voters are now going to make their choices, and they have only until March 7 at 5:00 pm PT to do so.

Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the Oscars will air live on ABC and broadcast outlets worldwide on March 12 at 8:00 pm ET/5 pm PT from the Dolby Theater in Hollywood.

The producers will continue to announce talent joining the show leading up to the ceremony. They already have been rolling out talent taking part in performances of songs up in the Original Song category.

The British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) have been doled out, with the 58-year-old Mexican Oscar-winning filmmaker taking home a prize on Sunday night.

Guillermo del Toro, Pinocchio,del Toro won the Best Animated Film award for his critically acclaimed Netflix film Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio.

It’s del Toro’s third BAFTA award. He’d previously won the Best Film Not in the English Language award for Pan’s Labyrinth and the Best Direction prize for The Shape of Water.

The 67-year-old Brazilian film director, producer and screenwriter and Marc Munden will direct episodes of The Sympathizer, a drama series adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel.

Fernando MeirellesProduced by and co-starring Robert Downey Jr., the HBO/A24 series is an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his resulting exile in the United States.

Described as a “blistering exploration of identity and America, a gripping spy novel and a powerful story of love and friendship,” the novel is hailed as a new classic of war fiction and has been compared to the works of Kafka, Orwell, and le Carré.

Munden will direct episodes 5,6, and 7 and Meirelles will direct episode 4.

The main cast also includes Sandra Oh, Kieu Chinh, Ky Duyen, Hoa Xuande, Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Vy Le  and Alan Trong.

The series is currently in production, with filming in Los Angeles and Thailand.

The series is a co-production between HBOA24 and Rhombus Media in association with Cinetic Media and Moho Film.

Meirelles received a Best Director Academy Award nomination for his renowned film City of God. He most recently directed The Two Popes, which earned Academy Award, Golden Globes and British Film Academy nominations.
