Bonham Carter Nominated for BAFTA TV Award for Portraying Elizabeth Taylor

Helena Bonham Carter is being recognized for her Elizabethan performance…

The 47-year-old part-Spanish actress has earned a nomination for the British Academy of Film and Television ArtsTV Awards.

Burton and Taylor

Bonham Carter – A BAFTA winner in the film category for The King’s Speech – is nominated for Leading Actress for her portrayal of the late Elizabeth Taylor in the BBC biopic Burton and Taylor, which centers on Taylor’s ill-fated reunion with Richard Burton on and off the stage for the critically reviled 1983 revival of Noel Coward’s stage play Private Lives.

The Oscar-nominated actress has said taking on the role was terrifying — “playing Elizabeth Taylor, a screen icon.” But that the role also became a touch irresistible.

“That’s one of the things about being an actor,” says Bonham Carter. “You get these little gifts. You get to step into the lives of these people you know about, but don’t really know. It’s a challenge.”

It’s Bonham Carter’s second BAFTA TV Award nomination. She was previously nominated for her starring role in 2009’s dramatic television film Enid, which was broadcast on BBC Four.

The International category features Breaking Bad, House Of Cards, Denmark’s Borgen, and France’s The Returned.

This year’s ceremony will be held in London on May 18.

Almodóvar to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award at the European Film Awards

Pedro Almodóvar is being honored for his film achievements…

The European Film Academy will honor the 63-year-old Spanish Oscar-winning filmmaker with its lifetime achievement award, the European Achievement in World Cinema prize, at the European Film Awards in Berlin this December.

Pedro Almodovar

Almodóvar has been among the most acclaimed, and successful, European directors since his 1988 melodrama Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown won the best young film honor at the inaugural European Film Awards and went on to arthouse success worldwide.

He has won five more European Film honors, as well as five BAFTAs, four French Cesar awards and two Oscars.

Almodóvar’s Oscar wins came in the best foreign language film category for All About My Mother (1999) and in the best screenplay category for Talk to Her (2002).

“I am very thankful for this award. From its creation, the European Film Academy has been very generous with me and my closest collaborators,” Almodóvar said in a statement. “I share with them the joy of this award.”

Almodóvar will be honored at the 26th European Film Awards in Berlin on December 7.

Saldaña Sheds Tears in the Teaser Trailer for “Star Trek Into Darkness”

Zoë Saldaña is getting all emotional in the new Star Trek film…

In the just released teaser trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness – the J.J. Abrams-directed sequel to the blockbuster 2009 series reboot – the 34-year-old half-Puerto Rican & half-Dominican American actress sheds a few tears in one of her scenes in the trailer.

Zoe Saldana

Saldaña, reprising her role as Uhura, is spotted with her hands in her face, being held tightly by a distraught Scotty (Simon Pegg). In another, she’s seen looking up at something in the sky.

Getting more attention in the trailer: Benedict Cumberbatch, as The Darkness. The BAFTA and Emmy-nominated Sherlock star looms large and destructive in the teaser. Even though his role is still unclear, Cumberbatch is definitely not a nice guy. And, he’s a major turncoat, taking on Captain Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and the rest of the Enterprise.

From the first look, his destruction is mighty, and it more than shatters what he calls their illusion of safety. Get ready for an extra teaser on December 17, for a few more morsels ahead of the first trailer.

Star Trek Into Darkness lands in theaters on May 15, 2013.
