J Balvin Scores First No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs Chart with “Ay Vamos”

It’s a big first for J Balvin

The 29-year-old Colombian reggaeton singer, considered the breakout Latino artist of 2014, has scored his first No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart as “Ay Vamos” hops 4-1 in its 25th week on the chart.

The track takes Digital Gainer honors on the chart, climbing 78 percent (to 5,000 downloads sold in the week ending Feb. 22, according to Nielsen Music), fueled in part by a performance of the song on Univision‘s Premio Lo Nuestro awards show on February 19, where he took home four awards, including urban artist of the year.

A recently released remix featuring Nicky Jam and French Montana, along with a price reduction (to 69 cents) as part of a digital promotion, also helps the track leap 11-4 on the Latin Digital Songs chart.

On Hot Latin Songs, “Ay Vamos” had spent 10 nonconsecutive weeks stuck at No. 2 on the list, unable to break his tourmate Enrique Iglesias‘ impenetrable 41-week record No. 1 run with “Bailando” featuring Descemer Bueno & Gente de Zona. A week ago, “Bailando” finally fell (1-2), as Mana‘s “Mi Verdad” bowed atop the list. At the same time, “Ay Vamos” slipped 2-4 — to its lowest rank since the Nov. 29-dated chart. But thanks to its surge in sales, the song finally crowns the list with its three-spot leap.

“Ay Vamos,” from Balvin’s La Familia B Sides (released Sept. 16), also earlier spent 16 weeks at No. 1 on Latin Rhythm Airplay (first peaking on Oct. 25), tying with Don Omar‘s “Zumba” for fourth-longest No. 1 run on the chart. It currently continues at No. 2 (with a 10 percent jump in airplay — to 7.7 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen).

Balvin is a 12-time finalist at the upcoming 2015 Billboard Latin Music Awards, airing live on Telemundo from Miami on April 30. He’s a finalist in such categories as artist of the year, new; and hot Latin song of the year for “6 AM” (featuring Farruko). He’ll be speaking at the 2015 Billboard Latin Music Conference.

Forget singing! J Balvin is ready to speak…

The 29-year-old Colombian reggaeton singer, the breakout Latino artist of 2014, is set to headline a panel during the 2015 Billboard Latin Music Conference.

Balvin, who just scored his first No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Pop Airplay chart, will join other urban music acts who’ve made memorable impacts in this year’s charts during the “New Latin Urban Movement” panel as part of the conference, which is taking place April 27-29 at the Ritz Carlton Miami Beach.

Balvin’s success — he’s notched two No. 1s on Billboard‘s Latin Rhythm and Latin Airplay charts in the past year and toured with Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull — has triggered a wave of interest in a new generation of urban acts who’ve gained considerable chart success in the past year.

“It’s a new school,” said Balvin, whose hits include party anthem “6 a.m.“(feat. Farruko) and “Ay Vamos,” currently at No. 1 on the Latin Rhythm Airplay chart.

The Billboard Latin Music Conference culminates with the Billboard Latin Music Awards, airing live on Telemundo April 30.

Balvin’s single has a sinuous, insistent hooks that has captured global attention. In fact, the official music video for “Ay Vamos” has logged more than 111-million views on VEVO/YouTube.

This year the three-time Latin Grammy nominee went on tour in the U.S. with Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull. He also made an appearance in Romania and teamed up with Inna to make a single, at the MAD Video Music Awards feat. Eleni Foureira, Sofia and Milan.

He previously reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Tropical Songs chart earlier this year with “6 AM,” featuring Farruko. The track was the Colombian singer-songwriter’s first leader on the chart and followed his breakout hit “Yo Te Lo Dije,” which peaked at No. 4 in September.

López to Perform at This Year’s Final Terra Live Music Concert

Pablo López is feelin’ the (House of) Blues

The Spanish singer-songwriter has been added to the list of performers at Terra Live Music, the streamed concert series.

Pablo Lopez

López joins a roster that includes Luis Fonsi, J Balvin and Juan Magan for the quadruple-threat show that will close Terra Live Music’s 2014 season.

The show will take place on Monday, November 18 at the House of Blues in Las Vegas and will be streamed the following day (Tuesday, Nov. 18) on Terra.com (7:30 pm ET).

It’ll be the last show of the year for the series, which has grown steadily over the past several years and now features one show a month.

Offerings for 2014 included live performances by Juanes and La Ley as well as “home” concerts staged at fans’ houses by the likes of Sie7e and Patty Cantú.

This, however, will be the first time four different acts will perform on the same show, with each act playing a solo set.

Fonsi, the headliner, is one of pop music’s leading stars. J Balvin, of course, is in the midst of touring with Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull and his new single “Ay Vamos” this week topped Billboard’s Latin Rhythm Airplay chart for the fifth consecutive week. Magan will showcase his new dance hits from Spain, and López — the newcomer in the group — is up for a Latin Grammy in the Best New Artist category for his pop fare.
