Karol G Earns 14th No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart with “Provenza”

Karol G has another airplay chart-topper on her resume…

The 31-year-old Colombian singer, songwriter and businesswoman has conquered the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart for a 14th time as “Provenza” rises from No. 4 to lead the July 9-dated list.

Holding strong at No. 2 (after its No. 1 high) is Karol G’s single with Becky G, “Mamiii.”

With the one-two punch Karol G logs a new career achievement, becoming just the second woman, after Selena in 1995, to hold Nos. 1 and 2 at the same time since the chart launched in 1994.

“Provenza” rallies 4-1 on Latin Airplay thanks to a 23% gain in audience impressions, to 10.9 million, earned in the U.S. in the week ending July 3, according to Luminate.

It’s Karol G’s 14th champ overall on the tally which measures audience totals across all Latin-monitored stations in the U.S.

It’s concurrently her fourth No. 1 as a solo act, unaccompanied by any other artist, two of which stem from her Top Latin Albums No. 1 set KG0516 (April 14, 2021-dated ranking): “Ay, Dios Mío! (Oct. 2020) and “Bichota” (Feb. 2021).

Further, Karol G sends Rauw Alejandro and Chencho Corleone’s “Desesperados” to No. 5 after its one-week reign (July 2-dated survey) with a 23% dip in audience impressions.

The last female to claim the top two spots together was the late Selena, when “Tú Sólo Tú” and “I Could Fall in Love” ranked at Nos. 1 and 2 respectively, on the Sept. 9, 1995-dated tally. (Selena logged a total of six weeks at Nos. 1 and 2 with those titles beginning that August.)

Further, having already asserted its strength with a No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs, Latin Digital Song Sales, and Latin Streaming Songs charts for at least one week, “Provenza” concurrently pounces to the top on the current Latin Pop Airplay survey.

Elsewhere, “Provenza” holds at No. 4 on the all-metric Hot Latin Songs chart for a third week, after its one-week reign (May 14). It concurrently rebounds 40-32 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Karol G Earns Ninth No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart with “Bichota”

Karol G has another smash on her hands…

The 29-year-old Colombian singer and songwriter has notched her ninth No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart dated February 13, as “Bichota” climbs 5-1.

Karol G

The female anthem pushes to the top thanks to a 23% spike in audience impressions, to 12 million, earned in the week ending February 7, according to MRC Data.

The audience improvement also makes the song just the second No. 1 by a solo woman, unaccompanied by any other artist, to reach No. 1 this decade — and both are by Karol G.

Greatest gainers for the song in the tracking week were: WODA San Juan, P.R. (up 392,000 in audience); WPAT New York (up 347,000); WSKQ New York (up 307,000); and KAMA Houston (up 268,000).

Before “Bichota,” Karol G previously reached the Latin Airplay summit completely solo with “Ay, Dios Mío!” (October 10, 2020), both as a female soloist. She’s also secured a spot at the penthouse seven other times, all via collaborative efforts, dating back to “Mi Cama,” with J Balvin, featuring Nicky Jam. The triple-billed act spent one week atop the ranking in August 2018.

Karol G is the sixth female soloist to reach No. 1 on Latin Airplay with a song unaccompanied by another act since 2010.

Here’s the leaderboard:

Artist, Title, Debut/Peak Date
Gloria Estefan, “Hotel Nacional,” Jan. 14, 2012 (debut)
Paulina Rubio, “Me Gustas Tanto,” Feb. 11, 2012
Leslie Grace, “Will U Still Love Me Tomorrow,” Oct. 27, 2012
Katherine Alexander, “Put It In a Kiss,” Jan. 18, 2014
Jennifer Lopez, “El Anillo,” July 14, 2018
Karol G, “Ay, Dios Mío!,” Oct. 10, 2020
Karol G, “Bichota,” Feb. 13, 2021

Aside from its Latin Airplay coronation, the Ovy on the Drums-produced track captures its highest ranking on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart, jumping 75-72.

Meanwhile, on the airplay-, streaming-, digital sales-blended Hot Latin Songs chart, “Bichota” returns to its No. 3 high (4-3), where its spent seven previous weeks.

Karol G Releases Bossy New Single “Bichota”

Karol G’s back with a bossy new single…

The 29-year-old Colombian singer-songwriter has released the new track “Bichota,” produced with longtime collaborator Ovy on the Drums.

Following in the vein of “Tusa” and “Ay DiOs Mio,” Karol G seems to have found her stride with her own brand of languorous reggaetón music; sensual but not overtly sexual, empowering but also feminine.

“Bichota” is a step up from the pleasing but less assertive “Ay DiOs Mio,” both in lyrics and hooks.

From the title, which is often used as street slang referring to men, “Bichota” is less about “empowerment” in the traditional sense, than self-confidence and taking control.

“I feel like a bichota, they all want to break me but don’t know how,” she purrs in the opening, immediately catchy refrain.

Set to sparse keyboards, “Bichota” is successful by virtue of its simplicity. At a time when the word “empowerment” has been bandied around to support every video that features sexualized images of women, here’s one that celebrates body image and attitude without subverting to masculine needs or approval.

Karol G Earns Eighth No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay Chart with “Ay Dios Mio”

Make that eight for Karol G

The 29-year-old Colombian singer-songwriter has earned her eighth No. 1 on Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart, as “Ay Dios Mio” jumps 6-1 on the October 10 survey.

With the song’s coronation, Karol G becomes the first female artist to lead the chart in 2020 without a collaborative act. The last woman to achieve the feat was Natti Natasha with “Me Gusta” (May 18, 2019-dated list).

Earlier in 2020, before “Ay, Dios Mio!,” there were four No. 1s with either co-billed or featured female acts:

Title, Artist, Peak Date
“Tusa,” Karol G & Nicki Minaj, Feb. 15
“Mamacita,” Black Eyed Peas, Ozuna + J.Rey Soul, June 20
“Caramelo,” Ozuna, Karol G, Myke Towers, Aug. 15
“Relacion,” Sech, Daddy Yankee & J Balvin Featuring ROSALIA & Farruko, Sept. 26
“Ay, Dios Mío!” hits No. 1 assisted by a 30 percent increase in audience impressions, to 11 million, earned in the week ending Oct. 4, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.

Notably, out of the 32 No. 1 titles on Latin Airplay in 2020, 15 were credited to just one act, while the other 17 were billed to multiple artists, and, of the 15 No. 1s by just one act, 14 were by men or all-male groups.

Elsewhere on the charts, “Ay, Dios Mío!” also arrives at the summit on both Latin Rhythm Airplay and Latin Pop Airplay, Karol G’s eighth and fourth leader, respectively.

Gains at the Latin Airplay sector help push “Ay, Dios Mío!” upward on Hot Latin Songs, which combines airplay, streaming data and digital sales. The track lifts 7-5 and takes the Greatest Gainer/ Airplay honor.

“Ay, Dios Mío!,” meanwhile makes its first appearance on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart, arriving at No, 94.

Karol G Releases New Single “Ay DiOs Mio,” an Ode to Her Fiancé Anuel AA

Karol G is opening up about love through her music…

The 29-year-old Colombian reggaeton singer/songwriter has released her new single “Ay DiOs Mio,” which she co-wrote with Danny Ocean.

Karol G

During the writing process, the track morphed into a tale of how she met her fiancé, rapper Anue lAA.

“I sat down with Danny and he came up with the idea of ‘She wrote me,’” Karol told Billboard during an exclusive Zoom interview.

“I said, ‘What? No. Not ‘she wrote me.’ In this song I’ll tell the story of how I met Ema [short for Emmanuel, Anuel’s real name]. The song starts from the moment Ema first wrote me a DM on Instagram and how he sent me DMs in Instagram and WhatsApp, until the day we met and went out. And when we went out, in the middle of dancing, and whether I’d go home with him or not.”

“Ay DiOs Mío [Oh My God],” produced by longtime collaborator Ovy On The Drums, is reminiscent of “Tusa,” Karol G’s smash hit with Nicki Minaj, in the use of a slow intro that then breaks into a slow, sensual reggaetón.

Working with Danny Ocean, however, was a departure for an artist used to writing alone. “But that’s the way you grow and evolve,” adds Karol G. Evolving, she says, has been front of mind since the COVID-19 epidemic and lockdown.

“There is so much pressure that you start losing your way,” she says. “Trying so hard to fit in was making me lose myself, doing a million things at the same time but with no direction. … Understanding myself has been the most important thing during these times, and I can tell you with absolute conviction that I’m Carolina again, the one who did music at home 14 years ago, and it’s connected to the entire concept of my [upcoming] album.”

Karol G’s new album is slated for the fall.
