Peter Lanzani to Make Directorial Debut with Biopic About Argentine ‘80s Rock Icon Luca Prodan

Peter Lanzani is set to make his directorial debut…

The 32-year-old Argentine actor, singer and former child model – star of some of the greatest films and series to come out of Argentina of late, including Argentina, 1985, El Angel, The Clan, 4X4, and Un Gallo Para Esculapio – will helm a biopic of Argentine ‘80s rock icon Luca Prodan.

Lanzani will also play Prodan.

Two other movers and shakers on Argentina’s film-TV scene, Argentina’s Armando Bo, an Academy Award winner for the screenplay of Alejandro González Inárritu’s “Birdman, and Luis Ortega, the multi-awarded director of Lulu and El Angel, will serve as executive producers.

The bio pic will center on the early years of Prodán, an extraordinary figure on Argentina’s ‘80s rock scene, educated like British king Charles III at Scotland’s Gordonstoun boarding school, a Virgin music exec in London and founder in Argentina of Sumo, whose combination of Joy Division-style rock, post-punk funk and reggae-ska took Buenos Aires youth by storm.

Highly cultured, though a gentleman with flashes of punkish aggro on stage, even by the time that Prodán hit Argentina in 1981 he had developed two addictions: Gin and heroine. The combination left him dead in 1987 at the age of 34.

Lanzani will co-direct the film with Martín Fisner, an assistant DP on El Marginal. Rodolfo Palacios, Sergio Olguín, Lanzani and Fisner are writing the screenplay.

The big question is what through line they will drive between ‘70s class-bound, punk-energized Britain and an Argentina of the early ‘80s emerging from a bloody dictatorship.

The biopic is set up at Bo’s Rebolución, behind his 2012 Sundance hit, The Last Elvis, and his second feature as a director, Animal, and Bo’s About Entertainment, founded in 2020 to focus on high quality entertainment for broad audiences such as El Presidente Season 2, for Prime Video.

Ortega will produce out of El Despacho, launched in 2020 in Buenos Aires by Ortega, Esteban Perroud and Palacios to develop original ideas, independent formats and big scale work, whose auteur work stands out in the international market.

Its first project, directed by Ortega, The Jockey, starring Úrsula Corberó and Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, is now in post-production.

Santiago Mitre’s “Argentina, 1985” Sweeps This Year’s Platino Awards

Santiago Mitre has picked up another award…

The 42-year-old Argentine film director and screenwriter’s Argentina, 1985 swept the top prizes for Best Picture on Saturday night at the 2023 Platino Awards.

News of a Kidnapping, created by Andrés Wood and Rodrigo García, is another top award winner.

One highlight of the ceremony, dedicated to films and television shows in the Spanish-speaking world, was Benicio del Toro’s acceptance speech of a honorary Platino in which he reflected on being typecast for many years in Hollywood as a Latino actor.

“If I had to play stereotypes, I tried to find the character’s humanity, a sense of complicity, so that audiences felt what my character felt and whilst they’re watching, don’t forget who I am and where I come from.,” he said. “What’s important is to share more than be divided,” he added.

Del Toro received a standing ovation by an audience made up of some of the best actors in Spain, which hung on his every word.

Directed by Mitre, who broke out to attention with The Student, then conquered Cannes with Paulina, the Academy Award-nominated “Argentina, 1985,” produced by Amazon Studios, Infinity Hill, Mitre’s label Unión de los Rios and star Ricardo Darín’s Kenya Films swept best picture, screenplay (Mitre, Mariano Llinás) actor (Darín), among five awards.

Commissioned by Prime Video in 2020, in the same funding round that included “Iosi, the Repentant Spy,” “News of a Kidnapping” scooped best series, creators (Wood, García), series actress (Cristina Umaña) and supporting actress (Majida Issa).

Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios and Chile’s Invercine & Wood produce.

It may or may not be a coincidence that both titles, as well as Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s The Beasts, which swept four prizes including best director, talk about how individuals or institutions – the Colombian senator husband of an abduction victim in “News,” Darin’s crusading public prosecutor in “Argentina, 1985,” a French couple in deep Galicia in “The Beasts” – confront violence, whether the institutionalized torture and murder under Argentina’s Junta, endemic drug gang coercion in “News” and wounded machismo in “The Beasts.”

“Thank you to the thousands and thousands of Colombians who, silently, without any show, try to make peace and a country, despite all the obvious difficulties,” said Umana.

“Memory is important. We can’t allow violence to be the innate solution in any part of the world,” said Infinity Hill’s, Axel Kuschevatzky, a producer of “Argentina, 1985.”

In other Awards highlights, Spain’s Laia Costa and Susi Sánchez repeated their Goya plaudits taking best film actress and supporting actress as daughter and mother in “Lullaby.”

Ana de Armas Has Earned Her First-Ever Oscar Nomination

Ana de Armas is celebrating her first Academy Awards nomination…

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have revealed the nominations for the 95th Oscars, with the 34-year-old Cuban and Spanish actress earning a nod.

de Armas is nominated in the Actress in a Leading Role category for her starring role in Netflix’s Marilyn Monroe film Blonde.

She is the first the Cuban to be nominated for a leading role at the Oscars. Fellow Cuban actor Andy Garcia was nominated for best supporting actor in 1990.

Guillermo del Toro has picked up a nod in a new category…

The 58-year-old Mexican Oscar-winning filmmaker is nominated in the Animated Feature Film category for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.

del Toro previously won Best Picture and Best Direction Oscars for The Shape of Water.

Santiago Mitre, who recently won his first Golden Globe, has earned his first Oscar nod.

The 42-year-old Argentine film director and screenwriter is nominated in the International Feature Film category for directing the Argentine Spanish-language film Argentina, 1985.

Alfonso Cuarón has picked up another Academy Award nod.

The 61-year-old Mexican four-time Oscar winner is up for Live Action Short Film for producing Walt Disney’s Le Pupille.

Cuarón previously won Oscars for Best Director for Gravity and Roma, Best Film Editing for Gravity, and Best Cinematography for Roma. He is the first Mexican filmmaker to win the Best Director award and one of the two persons to have been nominated for Academy Awards in seven different categories

The Academy’s final voting runs March 2-7, with the Oscars set58 for Sunday, March 12 at the Dolby Theater in a ceremony airing live on ABC and hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

The nominations for the 2023 British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA Film Awards) have been announced by the , with the 34-year-old Cuban and Spanish actress earning a nod from the British Academy Film Awards.

de Armas is nominated the Leading Actress category for her starring role in Netflix’s Marilyn Monroe film Blonde, a performance that earned her a Golden Globe nomination.

Golden Globe winner Sebastian Mitre has earned a nod.

The Chilean filmmaker is up for Film Not in the English Language category with Argentina, 1985.

Guillermo del Toro is nominated for Animated Film for his acclaimed film Guillerno del Toro’s Pinnochio.

Claudio Miranda is nominated in the Cinematrography category for his work on Top Gun: Maverick.

Winners will be announced at the 2023 BAFTA Film Awards ceremony, hosted by actor Richard E. Grant on February 19 at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London.

National Board of Review Recognizes Claudio Miranda with Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography Award

Claudio Miranda is under review…

The National Board of Review has announced its 2022 film honorees, with the the 57-year-old Chilean Oscar-winning cinematographer earning a shout out.

Miranda was recognized with the Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography award for his work on Top Gun: Maverick, which was Best Film.

“Top Gun: Maverick is a thrilling crowd-pleaser that is expertly crafted on every level,” said NBR President Annie Schulhof. “Tom Cruise, Joseph Kosinski and the entire filmmaking team have succeeded in making an incredibly popular film that brought audiences back to theaters, while at the same time being a full-on cinematic achievement.”

Miranda had previously picked up the Best Cinematography prize from New York Film Critics Circle.

Santiago Mitre’s Argentina, 1985 picked up two recognitions…

The 42-year-old Argentine directors historical drama, starring Ricardo Darín, was recognized as one of the NBR Freedom of Expression Awards honorees, as well as one of the NBR’s selections for Top 5 International Films.

Argentina Submits Santiago Mitre’s “Argentina, 1985” into the Oscars’ Best International Film Race

Santiago Mitre latest film is hopin’ for a little Oscars glory…

Argentina has submitted the 41-year-old Argentine film director and screenwriter’s political drama Argentina, 1985 into the Academy Awards’ Best International Film race.

Mitre’s drama, which debuted in Competition at the Venice Film Festival, winning the Fipresci prize, is inspired by real-life Argentinian lawyers Julio Strassera and

The David and Goliath tale follows how the pair and their young legal team daringly prosecuted members of the former military junta to bring justice to the victims of their deadly regime. Under their rule from 1976 to 1983, an estimated 30,000 people disappeared.

Award-winning actor Ricardo Darin plays Strassera alongside Peter Lanzani as Ocampo.

Mitre wrote the screenplay with Mariano Llinás.

Argentina has garnered seven nominations to date for Sergio Renán’s The Truce (1974), Maria Luisa Bemberg’s Camila (1984), Luis Puenzo’s The Official Story (1985), Carlos Saura’s Tango (1998), Juan José Campanella’s Son Of The Bride (2001), and Campanella’s The Secret In Their Eyes (2009) and Damian Szifrón’s Wild Tales (2014).

Two of them went on to win the Oscar: The Secret In Their Eyes, exploring a crime through the eyes of numerous witnesses, and The Official Story about an upper-middle class woman who comes to suspect that her adopted daughter could be the child of someone who disappeared under the dictatorship.
