Raisel Iglesias Acquired by the Los Angeles Angels

Raisel Iglesias will be seeing angels next season…

The 30-year-old Cuban professional baseball pitcher, a closer for the Cincinnati Reds, has been acquired by the Los Angeles Angels.

The team acquired Iglesias in exchange for right-handed reliever Noe Ramirez and a player to be named later or cash considerations on Monday, the first day of the virtual winter meetings.

 

Iglesias saved 92 games from 2017 to 2019, but had arguably his best season in 2020, posting a 2.74 ERA and a 0.91 WHIP while striking out 31 batters and walking only five in 23 innings.

Iglesias, a right-hander, throws his four-seam fastball in the upper-90s and also mixes in a slider and a changeup. He’s the second acquisition made by new Angels general manager Perry Minasian, coming over five days after the team acquired another native Cuban, shortstop Jose Iglesias, from the Baltimore Orioles. That day, the Angels also non-tendered five relievers, including former closer Hansel Robles.

 

Raisel Iglesias and Jose Iglesias are not related but were born one day apart. They were teammates with the Reds in 2019.

Raisel Iglesias will make $9.125 million in the final season of his three-year, $24.125 million contract, but the Angels are also receiving unspecified cash considerations in the trade. By dealing Iglesias and non-tendering Archie Bradley, Brian Goodwin and Curt Casali, among others, the Reds have saved nearly $20 million in salary commitments for 2021.

Reds general manager Nick Krall told reporters the team is trying to “reallocate resources” to address its pitching depth and find a starting shortstop.

Hector Rondon Agrees to One-Year Deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks

The 31-year-old Venezuelan professional baseball relief pitcher has reportedly agreed to a $3 million, one-year contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to ESPN.

Rondon would get a $2.5 million salary next season and would include a team option for 2021 with a $500,000 buyout.

Rondon, a right-hander, is a seven-year veteran who helped the Chicago Cubs win the World Seriesin 2016. He pitched last season for the Houston Astros and had a 3.71 ERA over 62 appearances, including one start.

Rondon has 92 saves and could be a candidate to close games for the D-backs, though Archie Bradley returns after handling the closer role for much of the second half of last season.

The Arizona Republic first reported Rondon’s signing.

Arroyo and the Arizona Diamondbacks Agree to Two-Year Deal

The 36-year-old Cuban American professional baseball pitcher and the Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed on a two-year, $23.5 million contract with a club option for a third year, team president Derrick Hall confirmed Friday.

Arroyo will make base salaries of $9.5 million in 2014 and 2015. The deal includes an $11 million club option for 2016 and a $4.5 million buyout.

The Baltimore Orioles also made a serious run at Arroyo, who was one of the top remaining pitchers left on the market.

Arroyo is 138-127 with a 4.19 ERA over 14 seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Boston Red Sox and the Cincinnati Reds.

He’s pitched for the Reds since 2006, when they acquired him from the Red Sox in a trade for outfielder Wily Mo Pena, and was 14-12 with a 3.79 ERA and 124 strikeouts last season.

Arroyo’s trademark is durability. He’s surpassed 200 innings in eight of the past nine seasons. The lone exception was 2011, when he battled Valley Fever, mononucleosis and a case of whooping cough that caused him to lose 17 pounds. He still made 32 starts and logged 199 innings, and he has yet to appear on the disabled list in the big leagues.

Arroyo joins Patrick Corbin, Wade Miley, Trevor Cahill and Brandon McCarthy in Arizona’s projected rotation.

Randall Delgado is also in the mix, and top prospect Archie Bradley is working his way through the team’s system and could be in the big leagues sometime this season.
