Frankie Muniz Becoming Full-Time NASCAR Race Car Driver

Frankie Muniz is racing towards a new career…

The 37-year-old half-Puerto Rican Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated actor has announced plans to compete as a full-time racecar driver in the ARCA Menards Series.

Frankie MunizThe series is a low-level feeder series for NASCAR — one that typically features less-experienced drivers — and will serve as a starting point for the former Malcolm in the Middle and Agent Cody Banks actor’s stock-car career.

Muniz got behind the wheel of the No. 30 Ford for Rette Jones Racing during a test session last Friday at Daytona International Speedway.

“I wanted this my entire life,” he said.

His first of 20 scheduled races in 2023 will come at Daytona on February 18.

“I want to prove to people that like I’m here to take it seriously,” Muniz said during a half-hour Zoom with reporters. “I’m not just here for a fluke. I’m not just here for publicity. I wanted this my entire life, you know what I mean?

“I’m mad I waited 12 years after my last racing experience to get here. I want people to look at me and see me on track and go, ‘Wow, he belongs,’ and I’m ready to prove to everyone that I do. Hopefully I do.”

A longtime racing enthusiast, Muniz drove the pace car for the 2001 Daytona 500 — a race in which seven-time Cup Series champion Dale Earnhardt died in a wreck on the final lap. Coincidentally, the chassis of the car Muniz is scheduled to drive at Daytona in the ARCA season opener was driven by Sterling Marlin that fateful day more than two decades ago.

Muniz said Earnhardt signed his jacket before the race and even told him how much he loved Malcolm in the Middle.’

“He said, ‘Your show has brought me and my daughter so much closer together. I love your show,”’ Muniz recalled. “And it was like insane to me that Dale Earnhardt is telling me that.”

Muniz said he first started thinking about becoming a professional driver in 2004 after competing in the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race in Long Beach, California. He’s also raced in Formula BMW events as well as the Champ Car Atlantic Series.

His last full-time season came in 2009. He said he broke his back, broke an ankle and had a pin inserted into his hand following a crash. He has raced sporadically since.

“I just took longer to heal than I thought,” Muniz said. “Not that you have to essentially start over, but I missed an entire season and I got an opportunity to be in a band. I know that sounds crazy. I was touring the world playing drums, so a lot of things just kind of took over my life and I dove in 100%.

“I’ve always thought in the back of my mind I was going to go back racing. As the years have gone on, it felt further and further away. So when I had my son 19 months ago, it honestly made me go, ‘What am I? Who am I? Who do I want to be to my son or what I want him to see me doing?”’

He expects plenty of Malcolm in the Middle‘ jokes during races, so much so that he’s considering making T-shirts to sell at events.

“I’m going to capitalize on that before someone else does,” he said.

Rebecca Black Earns Libera Awards Nomination from American Association of Independent Music

This year’s A2IM Libera Awards nominations have been revealed, with the 24-year-old half-Mexican American singer earning a nod.

Rebecca BlackBlack, who rose to acclaim with 2011’s viral sensation single “Friday,” earned a nomination in the Self-Released Record of the Year category for the latest album Rebecca Black Was Here, a six-track album that offers a clear sense of who Black is as an artist, stringing together the weirdness of hyper-pop with the melodic heft of mainstream pop.

Adrian Quesada has three Libera nominations…

The 45-year-old Mexican American Grammy-winning producer/guitarist and his Black Pumas band mate Eric Burton earned a nod for Best Live/Livestream Act for their performance of “Colors” at the U.S. presidential inauguration of Joe Biden, as well as Best Rock Record for Capitol Cuts (Live from Studio A) and Best Sync Usage for the use of their song “Colors” in the Concrete Cowboy trailer.

The 25 anniversary edition of Buena Vista Social Club, from the ensemble of Cuban musicians of the same name, earned a nod for Best Reissue.

Madi Diaz is nominated in the Best Americana Record category.

The 35-year-old half Peruvian American singer-songwriter and musician earned the nod for her album History of a Feeling.

The Linda Lindas, comprised of  Asian-American and Latino singers Bela Salazar, Eloise Wong and Lucia de la Garza and Mila de la Garza, are up for Best Punk Record for “Racist, Sexist Boy” (Live at LA Public Library), which became a viral sensation.

Jose Gonzalez earned a nod in the Best Folk/Bluegrass Record category for the 43-year-old Argentine-Swedish singer-songwriter’s Local Valley project.

João Donato is nominated in the Best World Record category for the 87-year-old Brazilian jazz and bossa nova pianist’s João Donato JID007 album.

Meanwhile, the nominees in the Best Latin Record category are Alejandro Escovedo (La Cruzada), Arca (KICK ii), Cimafunk (El Alimento), Helado Negro (Far In), Los Retros (Looking Back) and Xenia Rubinos (Una Rosa).

The American Association of Independent Music (A2IM) sponsors the Libera Awards. A2IM is a not-for-profit trade organization headquartered in New York City that works to support the independent recorded music sector. Membership includes nearly 700 independently-owned American music labels.

This year’s Libera Awards will include both a virtual broadcast exclusively streamed on YouTube and an in-person ceremony held on June 16 in New York City. The in-person gala will be held at an “iconic New York venue” and will include dinner and drinks as well as live award presentations.

Each year, the Libera Awards serve as the culmination of A2IM’s Indie Week, an international conference that brings together leaders from the independent music world for four days of keynotes, workshops, and panels. This year’s Indie Week will take place June 13-16 as a hybrid event — both online and in-person.

FKA Twigs Releases Collaboration-Stacked Mixtape “Caprisongs”

FKA Twigs is staying in the mix(tape)…

The 34-year-old part-Spanish English singer-songwriter, record producer, dancer, video director and actress has released her new collaboration-stacked mixtape Caprisongs.

FKA twigsSpanning 17 tracks, the collection is, in FKA Twigs’ own words, the tale of Twigs’ “journey back to myself through my amazing collaborators and friends.”

In a thread announcing her new arrival, she explains how, during lockdown she went in “search for connection” and found “even the most simple conversations incredibly comforting. When I went out I would find myself listening in on other people talking and imagining what it would be like to hang out with those nattering strangers. I loved catching sound bytes.”

Now, “I have fallen back in love with music, danger, trying new things, sex, love, raves,” she continues. The new release is “bronzer in the sink, alco pop on the side, a cherry lolly, apple juice when ur thirsty, friends in the park, your favourite person, that one sentence somebody said to you that changed everything, a club pre game, your bestie who is always late but brings the most to the party, meeting a friend at the airport, just togetherness. My world.”

Guests include Pa Salieu (on “honda”), Daniel Caesar (“careless”), Rema (“jealousy”), Jorja Smith and Unknown T (“darjeeling”), DYSTOPIA (“which way”) and Shygirl (“papi bones”), and The Weeknd, who joins forces with Twigs on the previously-released single “tears in the club”.

Caprisongs is executive produced by Twigs and El Guincho and includes production from Koreless, P2J, Mike Dean, Marius de Vries, Jasper Harris, Teo Halm, Arca, FRED, Psymun, Cirkut, BKay, Reaper, Sega Bodega, Fake Guido, Pau, Felix Joseph, AoD, Jeff Kleinman, Warren Ellis, Jonathan Coffer and BAK.

Twigs has two full-length albums to her name: 2019’s Magdalene (No. 54 peak on the Billboard 200) and 2014’s LP1 (No. 30).

GLAAD has announced the nominees for the 32d GLAAD Media Awards, with the 26-year-old Brazilian drag queen, singer and songwriter earning a nod.

Vittar is nominated in the Outstanding Music Artist for her album 111.

She’ll compete against Ricky Martin, nominated for Pausa, and then Kehlani for her album It Was Good Until It Wasn’t.

Arca has picked up a GLAAD nod…

The 31-year-old Venezuelan record producer, DJ, singer, and songwriter, whose full name is Alejandra Ghersi, is nominated in the Outstanding Breakthrough Music Artist category for the album KiCk i.

Gloria Estefan’s daughter Emily Estefan is nominated in the Outstanding Variety or Talk Show episode for “Emily’s Coming Out Story” from Facebook Watch’s Red Table Talk: The Estefans.

Jesse & Joy have earned a special callout…

The Mexican sibling duo will receive special recognition for their hit single “Love (Es Nuestro Idioma).”

Josie Totah , D.J. ‘Shangela’ Pierce, and Jonathan Bennett took to GLAAD’s TikTok page to unveil the nominees. The winners will be announced during a virtual ceremony scheduled for April 2021.

The GLAAD Media Awards honor media for fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues.

Arca Releases Video for New Single “Desafío”

Arca is ready for a new challenge…

The 26-year-old Venezuelan electronic DJ, record producer and mixing engineer has released the official video for “Desafío,” just days after releasing his self-titled album.

Arca

The track is the revelatory centerpiece of Arca’s new LP, his third solo project.

The bleak video shows Arca, whose real name is Alejandro Ghersi, bruised and bound in a leather getup, dragged through a dark forest by wicked men.

The “Desafío” clip was directed by Jesse Kanda.

Arca, has produced for Bjork, Kanye West, FKA Twigs and Frank Ocean, among others.
